What is the one rule you wish could be changed

The fact that a part of the course is OB is indisputable. That fact also negates all the people who are saying OB must have a harsher penalty because the person couldn’t keep the ball on the course.

On internal OB, the committee/course has gone out of their way to say “do not hit the ball over here!” The penalty of stroke and distance is the incentive they are giving you to follow their wishes.

On the other hand, the course is perfectly fine if you hit the ball into a penalty area.

I’d say internal OB is strong evidence that stroke and distance is appropriate for a ball hit OB.

Why do you need to wait for a response from them? I already gave you a link in post #1201 to a USGA page that clearly states a player can take relief under the unplayable ball rule simply because they want to. It seems you only watched the video and bypassed the text. Doesn't matter why they want to or if the ball is actually unable to be played. If they want to, they can. End of story.

But it was clear early and often that this contributor has zero interest in what the USGA has stated, because he (I presume it is a he) understands much more clearly than the USGA what the USGA really means to say. So we will all just need to suffer and carry our burden of not understanding the true meaning of the published USGA words because we and countless millions of other golfers around the planet just don't get it. Perhaps LICC will grace us with another 500 posts to relieve us of our ignorance, but even should he do so, I confess that I won't be reading anything further in this thread from this person. I can think of no finer accolade.

I quoted from Lewis Carroll a short while ago saying that the RBs were the masters of their meaning of words. It strikes me that LICC is trying to take over that mantle. His problem of course is that he didn't write the words in the first place.

Thank you for your thoughts. Despite living in a land of periodic drought and sometimes extensive fires, the last few weeks (and likely the coming ones) are without precedent in the scale, intensity and volatility of the fires. My family is in Canberra and while we have been comparatively fortunate so far in terms of fires locally, the nearest having been 40-50km away, everywhere is a tinderbox and the smoke is horrendous. The measure of air quality for smoke is PM 2.5 (the fine particles), and the health authority warnings are that all outdoor physical activity should cease when those readings get above counts of 250 on a rolling 24 hour basis. Canberra has been running at readings of 750-1200 for some days now with no sign of respite and the city is becoming paralysed. Record temperatures - eg 44C in Canberra and 49C in the Western Sydney area - are meeting with record low rainfall in much of Australia and the combination is truly lethal. While some burning areas have been getting limited rain today, this has been minor and only a very small part of the areas directly burning or in the path of the fires. And while the human and property costs mount, the loss of life of animals, livestock and wild, is simply staggering - some 450 million estimated to have been killed so far. We are all hunkered down, planning for the worst but hoping for the best.
