WAY overreamed hosel...any advice on what to use/create as a large shim?

Hi All,

Long story short, I bought some wedges and the hosel was reamed to .400 on the bottom 1/2" and .470 at the top 3/4". I know, crazy. Oddly there were aluminum milled shims that fit, but not enough to create a centered shaft. I don't plan to reuse them as they got a bit disfigured when pulling them out. I can confidently say that this was professionally done (matching depths, perfectly centered, countersunk, etc.) but will never know the reason why.

Any advice on what to use as a LARGE shim? I've heard of mesh tape, packaging strands for around boxes. Any other ideas? I thought about getting some thicker brass and creating my own shims

Yeah, create your own, or weld a spiral type bead up through the hosel and re-ream to appropriate size. Wire feed would be optimal.

Wow! Tough decision there. I guess you could, in theory, fill the hosel with JB Weld. Let it cure and then drill out the hosel to the desired diameter.

Make shims out of aluminum cans. Also check Golfworks. They used to carry various adapters for this purpose.

When i closed down my shop, i had lots of former FITTING club heads where the hosel was modified and way larger than standard, it was anything from drivers to wedges, but i managed to modify bushings from Mitchell so they could be re-used and non of them failed, so this is more about finding something that fill up that space, its really no worries with anything else.

The ones i used is this one (the 2 to the left) and they have a OD of 0.410 that can be adjusted down if needed, but you need up to 0.470....hmmm, cant say i ever saw them that large, but look into Golfworks, Diamond Golf and Hireko and see what they got to offer.https://www.mitchellgolf.com/product-category/re-shafting/ferrules/bushings/

I once had an oversize, out of alignment hosel bore and epoxied in a steel plug and redrilled it to a straight taper tip bore. It's possible but a bit of work. You need a fixture to do the hosel drilling.

ive been thinking the same, and actually ream or drill out the hosel to become strait, it makes the bushing fitting way easier.

Thanks for the input! Not sure I want to get involved with welding, but thinking that the premium graphite shaft extension may just work! I would use a brass shim on the bottom half inch, cut to height, and the shaft extension on the top .75" reamed to .370 inside. These are parallel tip shafts.

Maybe not as ideal as filling with steel and re-drilling, but I'm just a hobbyist!

This is what was in the hosel.

.370 at the bottom, but still .410 at the top...hence why I don't plan to reuse them. This one survived well, the other two not so much!

The .400 section would be easy enough with a .370 to .400 bushing sleeve or bushing ferrule.

 

Not sure what to suggest for the .470 portion, but using the idea Howard suggested in conjunction with the sleeve might work.

Maybe just use a regular brass shim and instead of the petals laying flat against the shaft, give each one a twist so that they sit 90* to the hosel and shaft?

You could also use a fine wire spring. Music wire springs can be purchased in a variety of wire thicknesses.

The only thing I'd trust is a hard metal bushing of some sort. If you know the exact dimensions needed someone with a lathe could whittle some up with ease. I've got a lathe if you can't fine anyone closer.
