Callaway 2016 Apex Hybrid vs 2019 Apex

The 20 degree hybrid would be a better 3 iron replacement, and 23 degree would be a closer to a 4 iron loft. The apex w/jailbreak hybrid will definitely be longer.

Off the tee, my 20* can go crazy Ming sometimes if I catch it on a upward AOA and high on the face. This is fine; I choose it when I want less than 250 but more than 200 carry.

Off the deck, hit like an iron, it flies consistent and predictable 215-220 carry and finishes 220-235 depending on how much spin I apply (hitting down on inside to get baby fade it spins and hold, for example).

What I’m saying is the 20* 2019 plays like an easier to hit, higher launching and spinning 3i off the deck. That’s perfect. Off the tee I can make it play like a mini fairway if I hit a high draw with an upward AOA.

I’ve never seen a 16* #1........ didn’t even know they made them ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ was it a special order/tour issue?

I have the 18* 2016 that is like new I may be selling soon......... depending how my newest purchase pans out. I just bought a Adams XTD ti 16* to fill the slot between my 2 iron and Driver since I don’t carry a 3 wood. I was using the Apex Hybrid 18* for that, but I wasn’t hitting it much further than my Titleist 716 T-mb 2 iron with a DG X100 shaft in it ...... (maybe 10 yards) I recently reshafted my T-MB with a TT XP 115 X100 shaft, and I hit it even closer to the 18* Apex Hybrid distance, with a closer descent angle. I would have loved to get my hands on one of the 16* Apex hybrids.

This thread has me rethinking keeping the T-MB in the bag ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ maybe I play a 1 hybrid and get a 20* Apex Hybrid (2016) My 3 iron is also a T-MB at 20* but a 20* Apex might be 10 yards longer than the T-MB at the same loft ?

I definitely would have to keep the 16* Adams XTD ti though...... it’s nice having something that would be 3/4 wood distance in a hybrid for me.

@DrivingRangeHero

16° was Tour Issue. When they first got out on Tour, I was told 8 existed. That was somewhere mid to end of 2016. I got mine beginning of 2017. I got it early on, but after I already had the matching 18°-26°. I've seen more than 8 of them at this point in life. Either more were made, or the number I got was not accurate.

So, oddly enough, the 18° 2H, which you reference, is my go to club; has been, presently is, and likely always will be! It is long. 235 to 240 on mis strikes, 240 to 250 on average, and 250-260 when I really reach back and catch it clean. The remaining Hybrids, the 20°, 23°, and 26° which all once simultaneously occupied a spot in my gamer bag, have slowly drifted into the back up bag. Miura's recent release of the CB•301 has allowed me to gradually add Long(er) Irons. Their 4, 5, and 6 Iron replaced the 20°, 23°, and 26° Apex Hybrids.

Apex 2 Hybrid 245 Average

CB•301 4 Iron 230 Average

CB•301 5 Iron 218 Average

CB•301 6 Iron 206 Average

.... In short, I too, am a 2016 Apex fan! I have 5 of them: 1 very actively in the gamer bag, 2 actively in the back up bag, 1 in the 'short' set, and 1 strictly for sex appeal nowadays! My swing has drastically improved in the last couple years allowing for the long Irons. If not, I'd still likely be gaming 3 of the Hybrids!

Babbling..... Over! LOL!

I was looking to fill the gap between my driver and two iron because I don’t carry 3 Wood and I already have a 2016 Callaway Apex 2 hybrid at 18° in the bag, so I went out and bought a Adams XTD-TI 1 hybrid at 16° That I lofted down to 14.5°. I thought the Adams would be 20 yards longer or more than the Callaway, turns out I was wrong. They are almost identical in length.

The pictures I have below that say 1-hybrid are the Adams in the pictures that say 3-hybrid are actually the Callaway Apex 2 hybrid. I just separated them that way because I had a bunch of other 2-hybrid shots from previous days, and I wanted them separate because no two days are like with your swing we all know.

2-3 mph difference in ball speed between the 2 clubs and the Adams was 3.5 degrees stronger lofted, and a 1/4 inch longer.

I haven't had the 2016 model but I just pulled the AD DI shaft 95x out of my 2019 Apex 3 hybrid and went to a X Forged UT 21 degree. The hybrid was great AT TIMES but it was either a 240-250 bomb (draw) or a 200-210 bad hook. The toe is just too large in my opinion. My buddy has the 2016 hybrid and the head is MUCH bigger on the 2019 than the 2016.

Driver: TM Sim2 Max Fuji Atmos Black TourSpec 7X

3W: TM M2 (2016) 3HL Fuji Atmos Black TourSpec 8TX

DI: Srixon ZX 20* AD DI Hybrid 95X

Irons: Titleist 716 AP2 4-PW TT X100

Wedges: Vokey SM8 50, 56, 60 TT X100

Putter: SC Newport 2 Custom

Ball: Titleist Pro V1x

  • 5 months later...

Late to this thread but this topic is exactly what I just went through so I have some insight.

I bought the mizuno jpx 921 tour irons which doesn't make a 3 iron. I've always played a 3 all my life so now I needed another 215 carry (230 total) club.

I bought the 2019 Apex 3 hybrid (20 degrees) . The jail break technology makes it very forgiving even on off centre hits. My yardage though was way further than my 3 irons and I was hitting it on average 250 yards (total). Sometimes it would come out hot off the face and I'd even hit it 265.

Still lacking a 230 club, I bought a used 2016 Apex 4 hybrid (23 degrees)

Now here's the key difference. Without the jail break technology, it is not as forgiving. Off centre hits can be felt more in the hands with loss of distance.

Also for people that say this is anti left, it definitely is not when you hit it off the toe.

It ends up hooking like a driver (at least for me) on toe side mishits and I'd end up 35 yards left of centre.

What I can say about this club though is that distance is very consistent on good hits. It does not jump hot off the face on certain shots like the 2019 Apex and I'm consistent in 230-235 yards and has over 4k backspin.

That's what I need in a 230 yard club. Consistent distance. The mishits is my own issue which I need to fix and that happens 2 out of 10 times but with a good repeatable swing, this is a very consistent club.

Anyway, I love both clubs.

I'll use the 2019 3 hybrid like a fairway wood and use the 4 hybrid like a 3 iron.

I have a 16 degree XR Pro that I'll probably retire as it's harder to hit than both of these clubs. That one goes 270 but it is so inconsistent that I don't normally use it anyway
