I was thinking about this more and the only thing I could determine could be a possible problem with Bryson's shaft choice is that they could be so stiff, that wedge shots come out too low and hot. I would suspect though that they messed around with that and probably soft stepped his wedge shafts so they aren't so rigid. I use possibly the stiffest graphite iron shafts you can get next to the rebars and only for full shot clubs did I use the intended iron shafts for the intended club. For my LW I used an 8 iron shaft. There is a noticeable difference with soft pitch shots of my SW for example vs my LW. The SW tends to come out lower and a little hotter than expected even given the loft difference (length is the same), while the LW is very noticeably more flexible at impact and I can really feel it get the spin and high with less effort than the loft difference would suggest.

For my case, I essentially intended my lob wedge to be for partial power shots, never really a full swing (although I can do that just fine, it just moon shots more than my previous LW), all the rest of my clubs are intended for full shots primarily, sacrificing some height and maybe some spin with partial shots.

I saw a comparison of steel vs the shafts Bryson is using and they results were identical. No fliers as expected since Faldo experience with Graphite was many years ago.

As far as the length of his wedges he could always choke up.Someone already posted but he did win the tournament and maybe save the criticism of his wedges if he starts missing cuts.

Exactly. He might bot hit them as close as some do but he has a lot more volume of them and he is making more birdies in the end or stress free pars. He is making a ton of 2 putt Birdies too and just racking up his bank account in somewhat a throw away year.

I used to have steelfiber i95 stiff in my wedges and I had difficulty in controlling yardage on full swings and partial compared to my current steel shafts. I had issues with the weight also. So currently using modus 115 for my 49 and 54 degree and modus 125 for my 59 degree wedges. It feels so much better.

I’m thinking he swings 130mph with the driver and then 5 minutes later has to play a finesse wedge. Easier said than done.

I dunno. With the distance and accuracy he's driving I think he's on the fast track to number 1 just as soon as he gets the wedges dialed. Just look at his finishes with poor wedge play. I also suspect his wedge play will be a lot better when he returns. I'm not a fan of his but I do like seeing guys with different swings and a different approach to the game. As much as I like seeing something new I have to turn my head away every time he sets up to a putt.

It looks like Bryson's pre-shot routine for any shot from tee with a driver is designed to get him amped and the adrenaline flowing. This is followed by a swing that you are more likely to see at a world long driving championship than a pro comp. He then needs to follow that up with a finesse shot with a wedge that happens to be the length of a 7 iron. He is a great player but this is a tough ask even for him and I think he knows it, although too stubborn to ever admit it.

The stats don't lie and his wedge game is woefully short in relation to his world ranking. It will be very interesting to see if he perseveres with his current wedges or experiments with more conventional lengths. I suspect the former and although he may improve I can't see how he can develop into a world class player in that area.
