Winter Golf Jacket Recommendations ?

Hey All,

 

I'll be heading up to my place on Cape Cod for the months of December & January - It will be cold and windy but is usually about 10 degrees warmer than Boston. I will probably play 1 or 2 rounds a week at my club and need a go-to setup that will work in the cold and if it warms up during the round. I have some great pants, but Ive lost some weight and my base layers and old jacket don't fit. I was thinking a base layer, golf shirt and a zip jacket  - any recommendations on a Jacket? Thanks all.

 

Also if you know of a jacket that will decrease my massive driver spin that would be great too 🙂 🙂

I dont like much restrictions,  so I usually go with under armor under my polo with a half zip. Neck gators are nice too for blocking the wind on your face

I play at Bay Pointe in Onset Ma. all year long. On the really cold days (45 and below) I wear a puffer Columbia jacket that has omni heat. It is really thin, not bulky. Underneath I wear just a mock turtleneck (footjoy or UA). I am pretty toasty. Have worn as low as 10' and was still comfortable.

Southern Tier NY here, fall golf is the best golf.  I tend to wear one of my Nike running puffer vests or jackets.  Lightweight but blocks the wind and allows me to swing like Bryson.

Scottish golfer here - all about the layering in December and January.
I go with an icebreaker merino wool base layer, golf shirt, thermal top (galvin green insula or one of the Puma ones). If its windy (or rain obvs) I have a Galvin green paclite gortex jacket on top.

I can't speak towards this year's Norse.  But, I love last year's version.

Got the Galvin Green Duke 1/4 zip pullover. That thing is warm! Paired with a thin merino wool baselayer and a beanie and I'm sweating when I'm walking.

It's all about the layering in my opinion.  I play year round outside of Boston, and sometimes venturing down to the Cape, and have never really had a problem other than with excessive wind.  UA base layer, long sleeve golf shirt, warm sweater and a golf rain coat will keep you warm.  Get a pair of winter golf gloves (I prefer the Mizunos as they are thinner), a warm hat and a neck gator and you should be fine. The courses usually aren't that busy and you can enjoy a quiet round of golf, that moves along pretty quickly too. I'd also suggest walking too, with a push cart to store any extra items you may need, as it keeps you warmer than riding in a cart.  Great time of year to play golf in my opinion as long as there's no snow.

I use to be a wind stopper sweater guy like the Windlite or the Footjoy Goretex Windstopper sweaters. It wasn’t until last year that I was turned on to the heated vest market. I have 3 (1 in black, 1 in navy and 1 in grey). I played the entire winter last year with just a polo, a poly/spandex quarter zip and my heated vest. I never once got cold...quite the opposite. Was too warm and had to dial the heat back several times. Left my swing unrestricted. Played the best winter golf I’ve played ever. I played in a glow ball event this past Saturday and wore one of mine. Was asked by a lot of guys about it. Got emails from my 3 playing partners saying they wanted the link to get one.

@Chilidog thanks for the link.   Sorry to be such a bother but after reading reviews the biggest complaint was the sizing.   Some say they run true to size, others say way too small.   What is your experience.   I wear a standard large shirt / coat.

I'm from Florida but live in NC now.  Spent the last two years covering NOVA for work so it gets what I would call chilly. I'm also a duck hunter and wouldn't wear anything other than a polo and quarter zip down to upper 40s to play golf in.  If you can find something like the Mizuno Windlite (Windbreaker liner with sweater outer) I can wear that down to freezing with just a shirt underneath.  I just ordered the new Adidas golf hoodie, but that will probably be more of a casual thing and it's not too heavy.  I always prefer a lighter jacket with one of the UA or similar (I buy DevOps on Amazon) compression shirts.  I recommend the DevOps and the 1/4 zip of your choice (I wear UA for 1/4 zip).  I don't even wear a polo underneath.  Beanie and cart gloves for the cart or if you're walking and you should be good to go.

I normally wear a large (I’m 6’0, 185-190 lbs and usually wear tops with an arm pit to arm pit measurement around 22”) and I have an XL in the vest. It fits snug and perfect for me. If you like it loose, I would go 2 sizes up.
