Poles play golf? Apparently on the Euro Tour

First time i have ever seen a Polish person on a pro leaderboard: Adrian Meronk shot 7 under par in the first round of Euro Tour SA BG-GLF Open.  I am aware that some Polish names can be difficult to spell and pronounce, so 'best wishes' Adrian.

 

Famous newby Wilco only at -1 but game is only 1/4 over.

I think Meronk is 6'5" as well.

 

His name has been near the top of ET leaderboards in a few events.

It’s nice seeing my friend Adrian on the leaderboards! I’ve known him since he was around 14 or so, played with him a few times at his home course in Poland. He was already at a plus handicap. Great kid and even better player. I’ll definitely be pulling for him this weekend! And yeah, he’s 6’5 or so. I’m 6 years older than him and he was already my height when we met

He is a class player. More Eastern European players will be coming through. Played a couple of Czech courses and both were immaculate. Albatross has stunning practice facilities.

Fantastic week to watch this one, half of it is watching hippos and cheetahs in the wildlife reserve next door, srs.

i mean, I’m not into safaris but this is very cool, something different and gives an extra frisson to the wild shots into the jungle

Met some lads who had been to Leopard Creek. They were well to do and well travelled and said it is an amazing place. The whole set up - food, wines, safaris and the course are top class. Bit of a trek to get to but definitely a bucket list course.

 

As for Poland, Golf is on the rise as people get more affluent. European Mid Am was played there a while back and the players raved about the venue.

That was my favourite tournament after the Majors to watch when I was subscribed to the Golf Network (satellite golf channel here). Stunning scenery, good golf, and the commentary was always enjoyable (Scottish guy called Dougie? and a South African bloke).

As  plenty have noted, the commentary is very good. Tony Johnstone and Richard Boxhall especially, various others 

 

in the studio, Nick Doherty as become a great anchor imo

Nice Polish boy Robert Lewandowski is a striker with German football (soccer) team Bayern Munich and is considered one of the best players in the world. It stands to reason that as the country prospers people there will get into golf.

Adrian tied for 2nd, with 3 others.  Winner SA lad, Bezuidenhout. Meronk went 73, 76 final 2 days. 

But a great experience for him.  Population prosperity not the only factor in growing golf talent.

Felt bad for him struggling like he did.  Not sure if he got trying too hard.  Definitely a different game at the business end of a tournament.
