Modern day equivalent to the MP 54 - but with additional forgiveness?

Hi all - I'm a current gamer of Mizuno MP 54s and after several seasons of making them work, I'm looking for something a little more forgiving.  I hit the 8-P really well and am perfectly content with those irons but when it comes to the 4, 5, 6 - I just am not a good enough golfer to work those to my liking.  I am planning on getting a fitting in the new year at Club Champion but would be curious if folks have any insight into what the modern equivalent to the MP54 would be?  My thoughts are either the JPX 921 Forged, or possibly Tour, but the Tour seems to be too demanding for my level of play.  Ultimately the Hot Metal Pro could be a good fit w/ the additional forgiveness, or Perhaps a HMP / Forged combo.  For reference, I've hit the 919 Hot Metals and they are absolute rockets compared to my MP54s but they may be too forgiving, if that's a thing!  Also would like a lower profile club head.

My question is - does anyone have experience with the MP54 and have hit either of the recent models of 919 or 921s?  Any other clubs I should be considering when I go to get a fitting that would fit the profile of the MP54 but have added forgiveness?  I'm loyal to Mizuno but definitely open to all brands and am after an iron that suits me well today but still offers some ability for me to grow into.  Understand the fitting will be the ultimate deciding factor, but any insight in the interim is greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your help!

I played and loved Mizuno MP54's.

The best modern equivalent in the Mizuno line would be the newest 921 Forged unless you are looking for a bigger club in which case the 921 HotMetal pro would be the next best option.

The other option in the MP line is something you have already suggested and that is a mixed set in which case I would suggest the MP20 MMC short irons paired with the HMB.

I am still gaming MP54.  I've hit other/newer irons, including from the MP18, JPX 919, MP20 and JPX 921 range.  Nothing has kicked my 54s out of the bag.

I concur with @RyanBarathWRX - 921 Forged and/or MP20 MMC are probably your starting point.  Similar profile, some perimeter weighting, slightly compact head shape.  You could run a mixed set: 921 Forged (or MMC) in short irons, 921 Hot Metal Pro in the long irons.

I can't comment in depth on other brands, have been with Mizzy irons for almost 20 years now. I believe Callaway (Apex) and Srixon (Z785) both have forged cavity backs worth taking a look at.  Others may add to that list.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

I own the 54s. I would say the 919 forged is a similar but slightly more forgiving head.

Guys - I really appreciate all the help here.  Hadn't considered the MP20 lineup but having done some prelim research it definitely looks interesting.  Thinking a combo lineup of the Forged/HMPro or the MMC/HMB as mentioned could be a pretty solid fit and will definitely bring this up when I do get fitted in January.  I'm going in with a totally open mind so don't want to just limit myself to Mizuno (although again, I'm a big Mizzy fan) - the new ZX5/ZX7 also look very interesting and feel like that could be another good combo lineup possibly.  Any other insight is welcomed but really appreciate the help thus far!

I was going to say Zx7.

consider 0311t gen2 is only 149 a club and they are butter with great tech and don’t get fliers. I have the gen2 p series and they are way better than my mizzy hmbs were

most direct mizzy equivalent would be the mp20 mmc... but I preferred my older 718 ap2 to these (which is also a good choice)

if I wasn’t staying with my PXGs (which I LOVE) I would look into the Srixons zx7s, with 4 and 5 in the zx5

I would say if you wanted to stay with Mizuno irons then I would look at the JPX Forged line up in either the 900, 919, or 921 depending on what you want to spend.  I would say that 921s are closer to the MP54s than the 900 and 919s though.

I'm another in the MP54 fan club. I played them for several years. I finally had the urge this summer to get new clubs just because. It came down to the mp20 mmc and the new TM P770s. I ended up with the P770s , I got a great deal thru a TM rep. It was close and honestly the mp20 mmc felt much better but I felt they were very close to feeling like my MP54s and I wanted to finally experiment with a hollow body. So basically I don't think you will gain much but some stronger lofts, but if your like most of us and we just need something new and shiny!

  • 2 years later...

Hard to beat the mp-54. I think the jpx line like after 825 pro has been disappointing. They have become to clicky. The MP-line is better but not as soft as mizzy used to be. MP18sc was a good exception model but not very forgiving. I would look at some other brand. Maybe the Wilson Staff CB. IMO they feel more like Mizuno than mizunos own models do these days.
