Recoil 95 vs AD DI for Srixon utility

COmedic

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, looking for a few opinions in regards to a shaft for the new Srixon ZX utility. Trying to decide if the Tour AD DI shaft is a worthwhile upgrade over the stock recoil shaft. I have hit the recoil in the U85 and enjoyed it, but felt it was a little loose (F4 flex). Considering the 95 stiff in the Tour AD DI. Any opinions on either of these?

Depends which version you’re referring to...I put in the tour ad utility shaft($99/.355 version) 95x into my u65 4 iron. Those shafts are tapered for a 3 iron so felt very loose to me. Smooth, but felt like I couldn’t control it. Haven’t tried a Legitimate DI version in it, which I’d predict would be night and day better.

Ultimately just ended up w/ an AMT x100.  Blends w/ the rest of my iron set.

Thanks for the response, that is my concern. I’m going to order the 2 iron and think I want the potential length advantage of graphite, though I just don’t want something that sprays all over.

Could look into the mmt utility shaft. Heard good reviews. That was going to my next test, but then found the amt x100 shaft on eBay for $8...$8 or $80-$90 for an mmt?? Was an easy decision, and ended up being a nice fit for me and what I was looking for and blending with my set, and less of a driving iron

One quick question, can you list the specs of whatever you have in the next slot down (3-iron), and if it is not something from your iron set, your iron specs?

Balancing length and dispersion is going to be all about weight and playing length. A lighter shaft allows for a longer playing length and a reduction in overall static weight of the club, which hopefully helps add some speed. Fine tuning the headweight from there IMO is how you reign in any accuracy/dispersion issues. Let me use the specs of my pair of Callaway UT's as an example:

X-forged UT 2-iron
Kuro Kage 100TX - 100g shaft
Swingweight - D5
Total weight - 409g

X-forged UT 3-iron
RIfle Precision 7.0 Steel - 130g
Swingweight - D3.5
Total weight - 428g

For the 2-iron, the higher swingweight via hotmelt in the head and the lower overall static weight of the club allows for a feeling of additional speed without the instability that comes from too much static weight loss. Dropping 20-30g of static weight via a lighter shaft is inherently going to make the club feel different, but adding some additional head weight (in my case around 10g) helps to keep a feeling of heft and sense of the head in the swing while still maintaining the speed related benefits of a lighter club. The ZX, like all the Srixon driving irons, have a hotmelt port so I highly recommend experimenting with lead tape to find your balance and then having the club hotmelted if you want to maintain a clean aesthetic (and also a softer feel).

As for the shaft differences, they are both softer mid, stiffer butt and tip designs, and the biggest difference you're likely to notice actually may be balance point. The Recoil shafts seem to be neutral/lower balance point whereas the Graphite Design DI Hybrid is higher, just shy of being in the "counterbalanced" category. This would likely factor in to how you end up balancing the club in the end.

@Valtiel thanks for the incredibly detailed response. I’m looking to pull my 3-wood and purchase the 2 utility almost exclusively for tee use. I’m going to purchase a new Srixon ZX split set starting at ZX5 4-iron with $-taper 120 shafts. I’m not overly sensitive to swing weights so long as it’s not super light.

No problem! Coming from 120g shafts then I think that 95g-105g range should work just fine, maybe erring on the lighter (95g) side if it is exclusively a distance/tee club. Given your concern with a bit of looseness, I would maybe consider the Graphite Design upgrade unless the Recoil 95 is available in the Prototype version, which is a tighter shaft.

I played the u85 3i for a while with an AD-DI 95x installed straight in at 40.0"; the u85 was a bit chunky for my liking and love that Srixon refined the look of the new ZX utility. That said, the u85 + AD-DI was a great club for me performance wise both off the tee & off the deck!

Re: the difference between the AD-DI .355 utility shaft & the corresponding .370 hybrid shaft, I've hit both (albeit in different clubs) and haven't "felt" any noticeable difference. That said the big differences between the two shafts are:

(1) price -> $130 vs. $290; IMO this is purely a function of market supply & demand... shaft OEMs have collectively concluded that they can charge more for their hybrid shafts vs. their iron shafts

(2) max length -> 40" vs. 43" (grossed up 1" for head); however, UT iron heads weigh significantly more than corresponding hybrids, so I doubt you'd need the extra playing length given that it could send your SW to an unplayable "silly" score

(3) Ability to refine the stiffness via tip trimming in the .370 hybrid version... however, it should be noted that the Srixon u85 & new ZX hosel bores are both .355. So to fit either with the AD-DI .370 hybrid shaft would require you to either bore out the hosel or sand down the shaft tip.

Based on your feedback that your 3i felt loose with the AD-DI 95s, I'd recommend you try the 95x version. It should be noted that I ultimately decided that my u85 + AD-DI 95x launched higher than my preferred window for a driving iron and opted to go back to my T-MB + Hzrdus Black 105x.

Good luck!

@eth4andThanks for your reply! The ad di shaft looks to be a relatively cheap upcharge so I am going to go with the 95x shaft with the 2 utility. Should be a good combo!
