I have the Recoil proto 125 in my 4 iron which is not a UDI.  It will launch pretty high and have a good amount of spin.  I would say the shaft is mid launch/spin.  It will play true to flex.  If that is what you are looking for, then the recoil proto is going to be just fine.  If you are looking for something that doesn't spin much and launches lower, you are better off with an exotic shaft such as the Ventus blue or black 9 hybrid, GD IZ 85 hybrid or CK pro blue 95 hybrid.

I play the Recoil 95 F4 in all my irons and my Z U85. What specifically would you like to know about it?

I would call it a mid-launch mid-spin shaft. Feels on the softer side but doesn’t necessarily play that way.

What shaft do you use in your irons? Fairways? Driver?

That's a difficult question to answer.   Individual's interpretations on shafts are super subjective.  You can get 10 differnent answer from 10 different people and 1) they'd all be right and 2) none of them may match what you will find.

Now, what we can do a better job of is relative comparisons.  e.g.  How similar or different it might be to another particular shaft model.   So if you give a lot more details of 1) what shaft(s) you've used in your irons in the past that worked well or didn't work well  and 2) what was the other exotic shaft that you wanted but weren't able to get  and why did you choose that particular shaft.

Those are the kind of details that might help us give you more useful feedback.

I am considering if I should order this shaft with the #3 ZX UDI or go with custom order of Graphite Design (GD) Tour AD DI-9s hybrid shaft. Also looking at SteelFiber as well. I am just not a big fan of high torque shafts and Recoil 95 S has 3.9 torque.

I play GD Tour AD TP-6x in my driver, AD DI-7x in my 3 wood and AD DI-8x in my 5 wood. Nippon Modus 120 Stiff in my irons.

OK given those shafts I don’t think you’ll get on with the Recoil. I think you’re right about the higher torque not being to your liking

The recoil 95 will be firmer / stiffer than the modus you're used to in the irons for the same flex (F4 - stiff in the recoils).  Whether that is a problem or not only you'll be able to tell.  But what it does mean that If you give them a try, you should demo both the stiff F4's and the regular flex F3's.    The regular flex will be a much closer match to the Nippon 120's.   But that's only stiffness.   Obviously the weight will  be significantly lower and for most weight is much more important for most than the stiffness.

Forget the torque.  The weight and the longitudinal stiffness (how much loading and unloading you feel) are the only thing you have to worry about.  For the vast majority of players torque doesn't contribute to the feel during the swing and no real effect on the ball flight results.  Only maybe effect the feel a little at impact - but only when you miss the center of the face.

I’ll throw my input on the Recoil shafts, I was playing Project X Lz 6.0 in irons and had a U45 3 with Recoil 110 f4.  Liked the feel of the Recoil but felt it was a little spinny and launched a tad high at times and had to concentrate on smoother swing. Just recently switched to graphite iron shafts and went with Recoil 110 f5....to me these feel and act more like I was wanting where the f4 felt I had to really slow/smooth things out. Simple answer to me Recoils play softer to flex (not whole flex, just softer).

I want to bump this thread because I have some questions...

So I’ve been using the recoil for about 3 months in my irons. I like the feel and I like the extra launch I get from them compared to the Nippon NS Pro I was using, so from that point of view it’s been mission accomplished.

I have had recent neck/spine issues and I’m dealing with osteoarthritis. I don’t know if I’ll ever get back to my former self and I’m in my mid 40s now so this may all be related to age however...

I have found on a handful of occasions  that the ball falls short on what I believe to be well struck shots. I guess you could call this ballooning? All I know is the ball launches on a desired trajectory but doesn’t cover the expected distance. It happens more with the short irons than the longer ones.

Further complexity: I play a combo set of Z785 and Z Forged.  Is what I’m experiencing - which I believe to be excessive spin coupled with high launch, a product of the shaft or the head, or a combination of both?

Are the recoils known to be extra spinny? Am I in fact mis-hitting the ball and just not feeling it in the same way I did previously? If it were you what would you look to change first - shaft? Club head?

Thanks 😊

I played the Recoil 95 in F3 flex for a while and didn’t think they ballooned at all. In fact I wouldn’t even say they were high launching. They felt good and I may go back to them in the future.

I needed more weight for tempo and the fact those damn Mizuno optimizers always tell me Modus 105 so I went that route.

Unfortunately No.  I don't think Tom ever got around to adding them to his DB.  So I only have my personal experience to draw from for the Recoils.

I checked for an EI profile, found the parallel Recoil, and the Proto, but nothing for the 95/110.  Oh well.
