Nippon Modus 3 Tour 105

I got a line on an original set of PXG 0211's, which come with this upgraded shaft.  I have been using S300's for 40 years, and they are starting to get a little heavy for me....I am not overly concerned about the weight of the Nippon 105, as I am the stiffness of the tip.  I do not play very often, and do not want my misses to feel harsh with this shaft.  Any knowledge of this shaft and how the tip may compare to the S300 would greatly be appreciated...thanks in advance.

I think you will find the Modus 105 to be a nice smooth shaft. The tip is firm but not 130G DG S300 level firm. The chart below give you a rough comparison of Stiff shafts. You can see the 105 is much softer than the DG S300.

I have been using Modus 3 105x for a couple of years up until last season. Feel wise I think the Modus 105x compare to most other shafts in stiff flex. They are smooth but no noodles, very nice feeling. The weights of the shafts will be a big difference though, Modus 3 105 are much lighter.

I have had the Modus 105's stiff shafts in a few irons sets, they perform very well. Although the shaft optimizer states the Modus 120s are the first and the 105's are the forth choice for my swing, I wanted lighter as an aging 60 yr old player. The 300s were causing some discomfort in my wrists and elbows. So a few years back I made the change. No regrets, and that was after a short stint with graphite iron shafts, which was a no go for me.

Quick observation to add to this post.  I’m way more weight sensitive than flex sensitive to the point if you handed me S300 and either X100 or R300 in a blind test I’m not sure I could tell the difference (although I suspect I could between R300 and X100...).

However, I currently have sets of irons with Modus 105 in both S and X and they do feel different in both the swing dynamic and at impact.  My 7i swing speed is a fairly pedestrian 84 or so.  I prefer the Stiff in Modus 105 and am no where close to overpowering it.

I think they are the best feeling steel  shaft I’ve ever hit.

I was being pushed towards heavy and X/flex shafts C-Taper 130X, $Taper, DG X100 ..... etc and ended up with what produced the best dispersion, launch and spin numbers for me which was a Modus 105s.

My swing speed with a 7 iron in 94mph with a ball speed around 127mph and they feel plenty stable to me.  Another vote for I’m not “overpowering them” 👍 I have a moderate tempo, easy’ish transition and mid-late to late release. I wanted more spin, since the shafts would be in a hollow body iron (HMB) which is much like the PXG.

I play the Modus 105s in my hybrids as well.

I’m short with even shorter arms that gives me a lower measurable swing speed, but what Mizuno’s swing optimizer calls a very quick transition. I had been using regular flex shafts in the 110–115 range, dropped down to modus 105 in regular and they felt very blah. I didn’t see anything good about them at all. Tried Recoil 95’s, liked them but too light. Tried the Mizuno shaft optimizer and it suggested the heaviest X-flex shafts, which all felt like heavy rebar. I tried the modus 105 in X and finally felt why people like them. They won’t feel like DGS300’s, but from what you are saying I think they’re definitely worth a shot for you.

This touches on things that qualify on shaft selection where swing speed is only a part of the equation.

I have a high swing speed (not WRX standards) but 94mph 7iron and ball speed around 127mph. First assumption is X-Flex and heavy. Since Tempo/Transition/release/...... come into play, the Modus 105s ended up being the best fit. I hit the Modus 105X and it was far to stiff “feeling” for me..... completely unplayable. I found the modus 120X to “feel” softer to flex than the Modus 105X.
