MMT (iron) shaft question(s)

mlp021

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Currently play a Project X LZ 105 | 5.5 steel shaft.

Wanting to move into graphite and the MMT shaft from Mitsubishi.

What flex would you recommend 70g "regular" or 80g "stiff". Also, if one versus the other...should I have them hardstepped or softstepped. (and I was fit into the LZs).

Thanks,

-M

LZ 5.5 is 115g and PX 5.5 are 115g.  However, bend profiles are not IME, similar.  PX 5.5 has a high bend, stiff tip.  LZ has a mid-low bend with a slightly softer tip section.  I have an MMT 105 "S" 6 iron that I tested too.

Recently, I played PX 5.5 for a year, before that Steelfiber i110cw "s" and earlier PX 6.0 for 17+/- years.  When I bought my 620 series, 620 MB set came with PX 5.5 and 620 CB set came with LZ 6.0.  Before changing to my preferred shafts, I played them for a while.

None of the above shaft profiles are IME like MMT 75 or 85 series, which are mid-bend profile.   I understand moving to graphite but why those MMT series?

Why the MMT? Honestly, because they are included as stock option for the PXGs I'm wanting to order.

And my Project X LZ 105 5.5 shafts came factory in the Callaway Epic Pros

Project x LZ is a taper tip. Be careful going to a parallel tip, the reduced shaft weight in the short irons can mess with tempo.

What part of the Lonestar state do you reside in? (just curious)

Project X site doesn't show any LZ 105 5.5 shaft.  They show LZ 5.0 110g and 5.5 115g.  Could be those 105 are Callaway made for??

I assume they are a Cally exclusive. I believe they also came as an option in the Mavrik Pro irons.

Makes sense.   If you're getting PXG from PXG you'd likely get taper tip shafts.  I noticed PXG offers 70G or 80G... that means they are made for shafts, so you know.  They won't have the same specs at MMT aftermarket 75 or 85 Taper Iron series.

PXG sure has dropped their pricing.

PXG uses parallel tip shafts for MMT. MMT offers a parallel tip. If it ends in "0" it is parallel, and if it ends in "5" it is a taper.

I have switched from my Titleist irons to Miura irons recently and am going to switch the iron shafts to MMT 105TX since I loved them with my Titleist irons. I just recently switched my wedges to Miura as well, and I had MMT 125TX pw shafts in my Vokeys and loved them. I just found out they have scoring wedge model and wanted to put them in my Miura wedges. My question is should I go to 105TX (117g) or 125TX (130g)? My thing is to go heavier on the wedges, and 105TX iron shafts are 113g so only 4g heavier, but if I go 125TX it would be 17g heavier, so would it make too significant of difference going that heavy?

I noticed that.  MMT - TT vs Parallel have very different specs.

Guessing, I would have to say 80g stiff.  But guesswork is not the best way to pick a shaft that works.

I would guess that a good fitter and builder would determine what's best.  That said, graphite iron shaft bend profiles can sometimes be made to flex.  I know Accra shafts can.  So if someone needed 70 grams, but needed a firm flex, we can do that, as many others can.

Do these MMT's play true to flex or stiffer due to the steel mesh?

I know the Fuji MCIs and the SF's have a similar concept incorporating steel and play stiff to flex.

Thank you

Can't speak to the MMT's or MCI's but the steel mesh in the SF's don't contribute structurally to the stiffness.   If you want to believe the marketing (it does have some validity in theory) it's there to improve consistency and help manage weight. Which makes sense from the standpoint of the material properties since graphite strands are generally stronger than steel.

They feel boardy for most folks.  I know they did for me.  The steel doesn't do that, however.  It's the actual shaft how how they measure flex.  Most of our customers don't like them for that reason.

Yes this is why I'm inquiring on the MMTs.  Thank you

I would demo if you can, three options:  UST TourSpx, the MMT's and Accra.  I think definitely one of those will make you happy.  I would lean towards Accra.  Like I said in an above post, they're outstanding.

That's just how they are designed - to be a low launch (stiff tip) shaft.  But it's not due to the steel mesh used so don't make generalizations because of the use of the steel mesh.

Basically there is no standard for flex so whether one finds them stiff to flex or true to flex has as much to do with what shafts the person has history with than the actual stiffness of the shaft.   e.g. Most who are used to playing  TT DG's would think them true to flex.  Yet someone else used to playing Nippons Modus 105's will find them very stiff and would be better off dropping down a flex relative to what they are used to.

So basic rule of thumb.  Don't get overly caught up with the flex labels.   If a shaft feels too stiff, go down a flex and try again.  If it feels to soft, go up a flex.   If that doesn't work and you're in between - move on to a different shaft make/model with a different profile.
