Long-term Mizuno MP-20 reviews?

I've been considering this same combo for months now, with 5 hmb at 1 degree weak and everything else stock, resulting in 4 degree gaps throughout. My only concern is the potential distance gap between 5 hmb and 6mb. The alternative that I'm considering is 4 hmb, 5 mmc at 1 degree weak, 6 mmc at 2 degrees weak, and stock blades from 7-pw. Unfortunately, it's impossible to try any clubs these days so I'm forced to decide and place my order blind.

Here's what Mizuno recommends. Looks like a good plan to me. You can play around with a few different set blends on their website

I absolutely love the MP20 MBs, there are a few threads of people really upset with Mizuno for that line, which I'm confused by. Classic shape, feel is really good, and I think they got the CG weighting perfect through the whole set. The MBs are also extremely forgiving for what you think might be a harder blade.

One piece of advice, just bring whatever ball you normally play to the fitting to get exact on the specs. I brought the BX when I matched the heads/shafts and they've been my most consistent set, by a mile.

I would do this, but I'll be fit at an outdoor range and I assume using their range balls. It's a top shelf range and experienced fitter so I'm sure he accounts for this somehow. Bit of a bummer, but for me it's more important to hit off real grass.

Ask the fitter for a couple of range balls, then bring them with you and you gamer ball to a big box store like Dicks/PGASS/Golfers Warehouse,  to hit off a GC Quad. It may not be perfect, but you would get an idea of what the spin number difference will be with select irons 4-7-PW for instance. If the range balls are 600-800 less than your gamers with a 7 iron, you could always keep that in mind while fitting on a Trackman I assume 🤔

If you are not using a launch Monitor, but using sight and feel, then a good fitter will have tells to go by.

May they all be flushed, and in the direction you were intending 👍

I have been playing a combo set of mp20 mmc/mb since last June, and overall I love them (modus 120s shafts). I was playing x forged/apex mb, starting the mb at the 7 iron, but the 7 iron mb punished misses more than was tolerable so I replaced it with the x forged 7 iron. When I got the mp20s, that experience definitely swayed me to go with the mmc up to 8 iron and just the 9 and PW in the mb,  but in hindsight I wish I had gone with the mb 8 iron. The 9 is my favorite club in the bag. I only go to a 6 iron before moving to an old cobra 24deg hybrid that can’t be knocked out of my bag (and the gapping works with the 28deg 6 iron) so I can’t comment on the longer irons, but I did try the hmb 5 iron and hated it. Don’t know why, we just didn’t get on.

Just got home from the fitting and I ended up with a completely different set than I had in mind. Figured I'd go with either the MP20 combo set or ZX7s... but the Titleist T100S with Modus 120 Stiff came out on top. Loved the feel and turf interaction. Lofts are a little on the strong side so I'll need to adjust my wedge gapping, but I'm stoked. Really hit them well.

  • 3 weeks later...

I figured I would share.

I played a full set of HMB, but could never get comfortable with them like I did the day of the fitting (part of this is likely due to the shaft, dg120, x100).

update today, I bought a combo set 4,5 MMC, 6-P Mb was amazed with the results. All shots feel more solid, MMC was just as easy to hit as HMB but felt a tad better. 8-P went half a club further with better trajectory. Now granted, the combo set has X100 tour issue so back to the 130 gr weight I prefer. Shocked at this because during the fitting i didn’t even dream of touching the blades... there ya go!

I have HMB 4-5 and MB 6-P.  Played them all last year and don't plan on changing them any time soon.  I really like these irons, the only potential change for me would have been to go with a 5 in the MB instead of the HMB.

I remembered seeing this review on the Mp-20 and JPX 921 line. Seems applicable.

The tester is a low handicap and high swing speed player. Fit well into the MP-20 MB and JPX 921 Tours

Nice video, but when he said "2nd Swing Tour Van" I spit coffee all over my computer. We need WARNINGS with the videos!!!

Ha, I didn’t even pick up on that.

I was interested in the peak height, spin and distance consistency.

it went as I suspected for the most part. I think the “flier” is a myth btw.

Rhode Island?

I used to play Montaup CC a bit because my playing partners lived closer in Fairhaven/Marion MA than I did in Boston at the time, also because it’s was a nice loop and in great shape to boot!

On the south shore of MA, we got some country folk..... but the terms not “red neck”, it’s Swamp Yankee! 😝

Seems like the MMC or the JPX Tour get all the love on WRX, but give me an HMB any day over the other two. I liked the MMC, but I love the HMB.
