Mildly related side note...   🙂

The MP29s predecessors, MS-11s and MS-9s, both had the same lofts as the 29s.

There was another set before the MS-9s that also had those stronger lofts, but I don't remember which.  MS-5 maybe?

Now back to MP29 chat.  🙂

Back when I took up the game and switched to playing Mizuno blades, I didn't know much about other clubs.  I later learned of MP29's and MP14's because guys I knew then, played them.  That doesn't surprise me there were others.  Thanks.

Pointless MP14 comment...

It was MP14s that I demoed, successfully, to get me started on my current blade habit.

Ironically, I've never owned a set of them.  I have a 2 iron somewhere that was a throw-in part of a trade deal, but that's it.

I sometimes wonder if I should rectify that.  🙂

Were the MP14s like a bladier blade than the MP29s? I thought I read somewhere that Tiger comboed MP29 long irons with MP14 shorter irons. If that’s true that just have been one bladey blade.

I don't know if I'd put it quite that way.  MP29s were said to be the lower trajectory set, and were largely 2* stronger than the MP14s.  The MP14s had a 20* 2 iron, 50* PW, and a super low CG (lower than 0.700", which is very low), compared to the 18* 2i and 48* PW of the 29s.

Basically the companion set to the 29s.  They were both current product in the 90s.

I've never hit the 29s, though they'd have been perfect for me in my younger days; I hit a stupid high trajectory shot back in the day.  I *do* have a set of 37s, the successor to the 29s, but that's another story.  😉

No. Both are "blades" but MP14 are rather high on trajectory. I have TP2000's which are commemorative of TN87, which are father's of MP 29. Not high trajectory, but not low either, somewhat middling to me. The 14's are near highest of MB's I've ever hit. Not my thing.

As stated earlier the TM 2014 TP is likeliest descendent. Faldo had strong say on those, so there's that.

Thanks so much, Howard. It seems like, from everything you’ve said, that I should be able to pull these FCMs and put them directly into a new, current-day head, and have relatively the same overall weight, balance, feel, and swing weight as this set of MP29s. Let me know if that’s not correct. If so, I guess the question would be to find the next set of heads I love and someone who can swap the shafts out for me.

YES, i dont see any issues here, it should be strait forward.
Bottom of bore to ground is "factor X" here, but if you stick to players/blades, i dont expect you to run into issues there either.

Again, if you have the offset specs please post them.  I've never seen a set of irons with "reverse progressive offset."

What I do know is that a set of irons with progressively less offset from long irons to short, will have INCREASED face progression from the same long irons to short.

It's quite common for people to see the FP numbers and mistakenly think the irons have "reverse offset."  I'm not saying you are making this mistake but again, I'd love to see those specs...

I don't have any spec sheets to offer.  You are correct/ I agree with you on the measurement meaning.  The larger the face progression, the smaller the offset.

Thanks, Howard. You have inspired me to at least consider this an option when looking for my next set. No reason to turn your nose up at "old" technology if it works for you!

This is not reverse progressive offset.  It's constant offset.  And please don't say the short irons have .01 more offset, because that's insignificant.

I think some are seeing a constant offset as looking like reverse progressive offset, because they are so used to seeing a pw with about 1mm offset, instead of the 2-2.75mm that you'll find in a set with constant offset.  Likely an optical illusion, based on what they're used to seeing.

Wishon still has a constant offset blade that is offered in 5-pw.  They're called the 575.  Also offered in cavity back 4-pw, which are also constant offset.  Both are beautiful forgings

Na, if you look around the new 221 irons from Mizuno offset variance on avg is .0045 (hovers between .003 & .006) between each club, and its around a .025 variance between 3 & the PW.

So really the .01 offset is considered huge being it is pretty much 1/2 of the current progressive 221 irons. Which is pretty much the gap between the short and long irons is.

Note, MIzuno's website dont list the offset at all for the older clubs sadly.

.01" is 2.5X the width of a piece of paper.

🤨

Said another way, it's equal to the thickness of 5 human hairs.

The difference between the #3i & PW is .025". That's two sheets of card stock on top of one another. It's slightly more than half of MM in comparison to a shaft hosel that's 13.5 mm's. Not huge, not noticeable.

Well we are talking about muscle back irons usually means player irons.... if its too much of a offset, then they will get dinged. The heavier offset is likely in the game improvement irons.

kinda need to factor the target audience in question when it comes to this.
