How much money to ship an empty bag when selling?

Hi all!

Quick question the title pretty much says it all.   I'm contemplating selling one of my extra bags ( Sun Mountain Swift ).   What is the typical price for shipping ?  Obviously don't want to lose money in the sale.  Thanks!

In my experience its pretty expensive, generally between $30-$40.  The cost of shipping almost makes it not worth selling if it can't be picked up.  I usually check all the shpping places too when I need to ship-UPS, USPS and Fed Ex.  UPS is almost always the highest, I think the last time I shipped it via Fed Ex.

$30-40 seems reasonable. I must be doing something wrong but I used the eBay shipping calculator and put the dimensions a box that would fit and it was over $100 across USPS, UPS and FedEx.

I just based the dimensions on the calculator as a standard box like 15x15x38” at 8 pounds and came up with those estimates. Maybe I’m doing something wrong.

I returned a PING bag three weeks ago in the original box.  Dallas - Phoenix was $43.75 via UPS.

Play with the Dimensions, you need to find a box that is 12X13X36....i think that is the sweet spot and even a inch above that makes it twice as expensive

1.  Get a box from uhaul to fit or local pro shop;

2.  Get measurements/weight and...

3.  Go to parcelmonkey.com for the lowest ship rates.  It will use ups or fedex for shipping.

Anywhere from $15 to $40 has been my experience.  For the swift, a 36" x 11" x 10" box should fit.  I always use the big 3 websites and play with the dimensions to see what size gets the best rate.  Can save you big time if you happen to be just over with any dimension.

Those dimensions put you into a much higher rate.  Try 36x11x10, or around that, and price will drop a lot.

Thanks a lot for the info. I wish I would get some interest on Facebook marketplace or craigslist for a local pickup but no such luck.

Cost me $40 to ship a Sunday bag. 32x6x6 4lbs.

Try and see if your company has a shipping department they will usually let you ship stuff at their rate.  Amazing what a corporate discount can do like 50-75 % cheaper

I got hammered last year for $80 from PA to AZ.  It was a Cobra cart bag.  That one hurt.

For instance.....sold a set of LE shafts to a WRX in Germany.

UPS/Fedex wanted $220 -$240

 

ParcelMonkey...........$60 (which used UPS)

last spring I drove from Chicago to Indianapolis to pick up a staff bag.

 

fuel was less expensive than shipping.

plus, the seller was a very nice fellow and we had a good time.

Thanks for the advice everyone, I did a quote on parcelmonkey.com and just put in two destinations New York to California and it gave me around a $45 quote. Definitely way lower and more acceptable than the initial quotes I was finding.

Update: Sold and shipped two bags that were just sitting around recently.

1. ParcelMonkey worked great for a sale I did through another member here using standard PayPal Goods and Services.
2. The other bag I put on Facebook Marketplace and when I selected a prepaid shipping label, they gave me a flat rate quote of $19 (just had to enter weight, no dimensions). Facebook took 5% of earnings, which isn't too bad.

So it seems like these two options are the best ways to ship a bag. I'm sure there may be other ParcelMonkey competitors as well.

I just tend to sell my extra bags via Craigslist or FB Marketplace.
