Prescription sunglasses?

Hey friends, great thread and wanted to remind everyone - prescription sunglasses (and lenses) are medical expenses so make sure to pay for them with HSA/FSA type funds if you have them, and save the receipts for your taxes depending on your state laws on medical expenses!

 

Prescription sunglasses are one of my "specialties", as for about 10 years I worked for a company that not only gave us the cadillac of insurance plans, but also put $4500 into an FSA type account for you to use or lose each year. Part of my job in finance also included planning what to do with the returned/unspent funds, so I made damn sure to use all of mine each year. I rarely had medical expenses, especially with our great insurance, so I used that $4500 every year on a lot of ridiculous FSA eligible items. It's amazing what the IRS allows as tax-exempt medical when you start to dabble into the naturopath medicine world, like finding a doctor who wrote me a "prescription" for a $4400 massage chair to use right at year end. Anyways, that also meant I tried LOTS of prescription sunglasses over the years, before I finally used it one year on Lasik.

 

Anyways, my favorites for golf are HANDS DOWN, the Maui Jim HCL Bronze lens. I don't care what people say about polarized making it hard to see slope, I call BS, maybe bad lens quality (like using plastic instead of glass?) and polarization combine do that, but I have no issues reading slope in my maui jim kawika's with bronze lens. Also super easy to track balls in the sky and find them in the grass. The only other lens I would say were better specifically for golf were the Oakley Prism Golf, but I just can't stand how rose-washed everything is and how distorted it makes the green. I live in AZ and one of my favorite parts of golfing is the greenery, so red-washing it all to make it look like the rest of the dirt I see everywhere else just feels criminal.

I have a couple pairs of Rx sunglasses with polarized lenses. I find it notably harder to read greens with both pairs compared to my regular glasses. I wouldn't be surprised at all if different people experience the impact of polarized lenses on green reading differently either. YMMV and all that.

If one can't understand and differentiate the sheen of looking down grain compared to the flat darkness of looking into the grain in polarized lenses, the odds are they can't tell the difference in any lenses,or none..........

I wore Oakley RX for many years in golf oriented lenses, G30 Black Iridium, VR28 Black Iridium, Black Iridium and Prizm Golf all non-polarized in the Flak Jacket XLJ frames. I did have an astigmatism in my left eye. Good news I had cataract surgery for both eyes in October 2021 (one the first week one the last week). For addition cost, I had a lens that correct my astigmatism in my left eye, now 20/20 both eyes, I consider myself lucky. As for the Oakley's I ordered non RX lenses that were available, replaced the RX, ready to go. My sensitivity to light at this time make the Prizm Golf unplayable for me, going with the Prizm Dark Golf for now. HTH

I've been playing with the Oakley for the past 15 years.  I'm using Prizm Deep Water in single vision polarized RX for the last few years.  Prizm Golf had too much light transmission for my taste.  No issues reading greens, great contrast for me.  I wear them in all conditions.

Your eye doctor is right.  I got some progressive Oakley's that wrap and they stink.  I won't buy another pair or wraps, my mistake.

Another confirmation of that.  I ended up getting Ray Ban pretty much a standard eye glass frame with the Sport RX progressive lens in them.   They work fine.

Oakley are my favorites, and mine are progressive lenses. PRIZM lenses, have a look at those.

 

IF Maui Jim can make RX poly lenses worth a look, the rose or bronze are great for golf....my first RX sunglasses were MJ, but the glass lenses are noticeably heavier than Oakleys.

Im so late to this conversation but check out Costco if you're a member, I get my regular prescription glasses at the local store but got the last 2 pair of  prescription sunglasses at Costco. They had a handful of styles at about half the price of the regular eyeglass store.

When I had CIGNA health insurance they had a sweet deal with Lenscrafters and I was able to get a $1000 pair of eyeglasses for $300.

I've bought inexpensive non polarized glasses from Zennis.

Large frames look good on me so they work very effectively as sunglasses.  The large flat lenses block out a lot of light without distortion.

 

Plastic Transition (automatic darkening) lenses wear out, so you may want to factor that into your purchasing decision.

I just ordered new progressives and was going to have the current ones tinted.

there is so little change to the RX it seems like a good idea.

wonder if I should get brown or dk gray tint.

 

anyone else do this?

My last two prescription sunglasses were brown (suggestion from the optician) and I wouldn't have it any other way.
