My (and every other) basketball coach always said: "there is going to come a time when winter asks you what you did last summer." 

 

I always had the same answer for winter "I partied and chased girls." So I was a mediocre player, who had had a great summer.

 

I have tried this motivation stuff with my kids and it never worked, they either decide they want more out of it, or they can be like I was. It still comes down to how much do you love the game. That is the start and finish of all of it. Love for the game itself, the actual act of the getting better process (grinding) is what they like to do, then they will succeed. Parental motivation only will take you so far (typically sophomore year).

It's great advice and very motivational to hear, but I'm not sure it's going to change how someone thinks or acts.

 

Either someone has that sort of mindset and what Tiger said is already something he/she already knows, or they do not have that mindset and no amount of motivational quotes is going to change that.

 

I think back to the athletic dept. weight rooms we had when I played in college. They all had various motivational quotes attached to the walls from famous sports figures printed in big, bold font. I just remember looking at them and thinking "I'm here in a weight room at 6 am on a Friday morning, I don't need the ghost of Vince Lombardi to motivate me..."

Results either motivate or they don’t. If they aren’t motivated on their own by their results, then you aren’t going to change that. Competitors are driven to get better, not everyone hates losing enough work hard enough in general. Then add in the fact that even working in golf, you’re going to “lose” more than you win. It’s the ultimate test of determination.

You can’t have million dollar dreams and a five cent work ethic
