Lol.  Never knew this.  I have a word I use “ persactly “ meaning the same , which I think I made up. But it’s possible I absorbed it from somewhere at some time …I don’t really know.

Aren’t you required to post rounds played under the rules?
 

To call not “grinding” or not using a gps for yardage, etc. sandbagging is strange.

 

The OP’s problem lies in caring about handicapped events.

 

Best not worry about them.

Other national authorities encourage players to return general play scores played under the Rules. But they must be pre-declared and attested.

Potential and demonstrated ability are quite similar.  I still suggest that the best measure of "demonstrated ability" is your best score out of the last 20 or 30.

 

Your single best score absolutely demonstrates your ability.

Similar, but not the same.

 

Potential - "Having or showing the capacity to become or develop into something in the future." 

 

Potential is impossible to measure and is no doubt why they changed the wording.

 

While I understand what you're saying, "demonstrated ability", to me, is closer to an average of your better scores,,,,,,,, or perhaps even all of them, not the absolute best you've ever played; which, btw, could involve any number of flukes, lucky bounces/breaks, etc.

 

But what ev.   Not worth a whole lot of discussion. 👍

Demonstrated ability is a better description.  Potential comes into play when a player is improving faster than the system can react. Or even the reverse, when a player has rapidly declining ability due to illness or injury. Ideally you would have some time for the player to post some “general play” scores before an upcoming competition. It’s very helpful to have some decent info to make an adjustment. But it is often uncertain and tricky. I feel lucky that things went well for us. We had good relationships with open communication, and enough time and info to make good decisions.

 

Handicap Committees need to be both proactive and reactive. But the proactive part is key - to educate and inform, and gain compliance and respect from the members. You cannot be just reactive.
