Best Golf Putting Mat

looking for member feedback on which indoor putting mat you use and why?

I had a Varispeed, it was OK.

Now have a Perfect Practice mat, I like it much better. Only complaints are it doesn't really work with my Pelz mirror, and my dog occasionally makes it crooked.

I have a perfect practice mat.  The lines on the turf make it easy to see if my putting stoke is online and if the ball is rolling where I've pointed it.

Why do you like it over the verispeed? The only complaint I had with the verispeed was that there wasn't a ball return so I got a puttout which solved that. I'm interested in the xl perfect practice for the extra length.

I just bought the ($150) acrylic version and the practice mirror ($30) for $151 to replace a cheap import I bought last year for $60.

I'm using the TrueBirdie mat paired with a putt out or sklz putting cup/reducer and so far it seems to be nice. Rolls up easily to store for when you are not using it and it lays flat fairly quikly when you go to roll it out again. I would leave it out all the time, but my dog likes to think any type of rug will fly away if he's not laying on it.

Not long enough, now ball return, not a lot of difference in speed each direction. It's serviceable, but I like the Perfect Practice much better, and it's helped my putting noticeably more than the Varispeed.

It will groove.

After vacuuming, there will be odd breaks.  The only way I’ve found to maintain a straight roll is to brush the mat.

 

 It’s too much hassle for what should be a simple thing.  I’m getting a BirdieBall mat to replace it.

Thanks for the input.  I'm not interested in that much upkeep on a mat either.

Big Moss Augusta V2 has been my favorite.

I have both the Birdie Ball and Puttout.  The BB has a superior roll and you can get it at different speeds. However, the BB is probably not a good idea if you leave it out and have pets. The foam is easily ripped/pierced which adversely affects the roll. The Puttout is more durable since it’s just a piece of carpet.

I use Varispeed and I like it a lot. I also have a couple of imitation versions from Amazon but Varispeed is vastly better having a thicker backing. I mean the imitation ones are not bad either if you have perfectly smooth floor. No ball return is really not an issue for me. You are supposed to get out of putting stand and walk a little every 3 to 5 putts to avoid injury to your lower back so a few steps to pick up the balls is perfect. 

 

My latest project is to build a platform with adjustable feet and covered with pool table felt. It's a 12 ft long wall shelf I removed and didn't know what else to do with it. Talk about putting on glass...  🤣

I've went through a few and was leaning towards Birdie Ball, but not good for pets/higher traffic. 

I currently have a 13 ft. Wellputt mat and love it

The perfect put is great, only downside I have noticed which is the same as any putting mat would be, is my puppy thinks its his spot to pee on in the house lol.

I am interested in a BirdieBall matt as well, but unfortunately my carpet is plush that it would be laying on.

I purchased some synthetic turf from a company that synthetic green. I sourced out some scrap piece and made a platform to put it on in my office. It rolls 11/10. Highly recommend putting in the effort

What distance is ideal to practice putting from indoors?  5, 10, 15, 20 feet?  All of them?  Just curious what is recommended or typical.

Maybe it's just me, but my perfect putter has developed a "valley" along the lines so that it's basically impossible to miss now. I have to roll it diagonally across the mat to get any meaningful practice

The Wellputt 13’ mat is actually pretty good. It has different zones and games to work on pace and alignment.

I love my Birdie Ball mat. Not great when the dogs step on it but it mostly cosmetic since they toenail marks generally have zero effect on the roll. I actually ordered a longer one that what I needed then cut it in half so no I have two. One side I left longer for practicing the mid-long range putts and the other is smaller and much easier to get out of the closet and thrown down on the floor for those 6-8ft putts while having a beer and watching anything TXG puts out on YT lol...

I actually will go against the grain here. I have a birdie ball mat and do NOT like it. Because of the surface, the ball sticks to the ground artificially. I have found the ball rolls too good on the Birdie ball, then the second I go out to the course I can see/hear my ball is actually bouncing off the face (testing new putters). easy way to see this is if you were to chip onto it. 1 bounce then the ball is glued to the surface. I also think the Birdie ball mats are ugly and not very durable.

That's good and interesting info.  I'm trying to decide if that would matter for me for simply practicing, rather than evaluating putter loft.  Probably not.

PuttOUT mat on two horse stable floor panels (Tractor Supply) - 2 years of use no grooving no issues. Vacuum maybe every couple weeks on hardwood setting. 

 

Ive had a Big Moss and couple other lesser branded versions in past but went with straight 6-7 footers to groove stroke.

That's interesting.  I don't think the grooving on mine is due to the under layer or lack thereof.  Maybe due to not enough vacuuming.  But every time I vacuum, the mat gets weird grainy breaks that I have to smooth out with a little hand broom. 

 

Do you putt down the middle exclusively?  I do that.  Mine is a narrow one, about 19 inches wide.

I have the Perfect Practice as well. It’s nice. When I purchased mine they had a promotion that included a free perfect Practice mirror. They work well together

I looked at those the other day for a simulator option.   Glad to see they hold up well.  Automotive carpet over them may be the way to go.
