Please mark your ball

If it's actually 10yds, that's fine....but I just stepped off 10yds in my house. That's pretty far away. Usually peeps standing behind you are more like 5 yards. And if they are perfectly still, again no big deal but people usually aren't. If someone is on my line and 5-6 yards behind, I can see them and any movement.

... Some tees we are closer but again everyone wants someone looking for their ball and of course we are all very still.

The person who asked this question about 10 replies up used the word Competitor. The question wasn't about what we do on a casual round.

... I got that, but threads have a way of meandering to similar situations.

Found this as a response to this very thing which I thought was a good answer

a) It's against the rules for a caddie or playing partner to stand on your line. Rule 14-2:

14-2. Assistance

In making a stroke, a player must not:

a. Accept physical assistance or protection from the elements; or
b. Allow his caddie, his partner or his partner 's caddie to position himself on or close to an extension of the line of play or theline of putt behind the ball.

b) It's considered poor etiquette per the usga rules:

“Players should not stand close to or directly behind the ball, or directly behind the hole, when a player is about to play. “

Note that there's nothing in the rules that says you can't stand on the line of an opponent - like when they're putting and you want to see the read - but it is considered a breach of etiquette per the Rules of Golf. There's no "rule" against it but it's in the physical book.

This has been in Rule 10 for more than 4 years now.  The time frame where the caddie is not allowed to stand there has been increased, although the new (2023) rules do allow the caddie to be behing the ball for specific reasons, for a specific period of time.

This part has also been removed from the rules at least 4 years ago, although Rule 1.2 still requires a player to be considerate of others.

Try this.  Mark your ball with a second , differently marked ball.  😂

"Mark your ball with a second, differently marked ball"  Ha ha I like that.    But then, I guess he will just tell you to move your "mark." I wonder if there is a legal limit to how far you have to move a mark.

May my caddy stand, on the green, beyond the hole, say 3meters, but on the line of play?

I have seen the Rule and believe this action is NOT expressly forbidden.

10.2b(1) says the caddie may not stand in a position for the Player to play towards while the stroke is being made.  Is your caddie there for you to play towards?  Thats a breach, the General Penalty.

Interesting topic ...

- Why would you care if its marked unless it's in your line

- Can you mark your opponents ball & then put it back ... if they refuse to

- I believe you can request a mark anywhere if it's affecting you ... correct

Its pretty easy to find these Rules at either the USGA or R&A websites.  You may not intentionally lift your Opponents ball without his authorization, 9.5, with just a few exceptions.  You may REQUIRE another player to mark his ball if it interferes with your own play, OR if his ball might help anyone else's play, 15.3.
