Best putter milling ever...who can replicate it?

Hi everyone, my old Scotty Cameron Studio Stainless Newport 2.5 (left handed) was stolen about a year ago. It has been my putter for over 10 years, and there haven't been any good condition (and decently priced) Studio Stainless putters come up online. As a lefty, there aren't many flow neck options, and I'm looking into getting a custom putter made. With that said, I'm obsessed with the old Scotty Cameron face milling--you can visibly see the milling pattern, but if you rub your finger along the face it almost feels smooth (see attached pictures). I'm not talking about a light milling akin to the current Special Select line or things I've seen other manufacturers do. 

 

Please help me out. Do any of you have tips or leads on a custom putter maker who was able to recreate this milling? I've seen it on some recent Circle T putters, but those are out of the question for me. I realize it's weird for me to be so attached to a face milling pattern, but here I am...

I had a TP Mills Slot Back 200 putter a while back that was similar. You could see the milling, but it was essentially smooth to the touch.

Reach out to Lamont Mann, @golfluvzme/ Mannkrafted . He can and will do lots of different face mill patterns to suit customer needs/preferences- great guy in addition to being a true craftsman!

If you're doing a custom a lot of shops can easily recreate this milling. Usually call it something like double circles, football milling, etc.

I figured. When I got that one in the mail, I was surprised how smooth the face milling was even though you could easily see the marks. Lajosi has also mastered his true spiral milling to look like it has some depth, but it is completely smooth. See below for an example.

Thanks for your response. I've seen a lot of his work, and it's incredible!! I haven't seen the type of milling I was hoping for on his page before, but it looks like he is pretty capable and could probably figure it out. Thank you again.

First of all, that's a flippin amazing putter!! I'm sure you've dropped some awesome putts with that thing. Secondly, I appreciate your response. I really love the look of that face--I've seen a lot of custom putters posted on different instagram pages that have the "double football" or "tour milling" (see below), but I was specifically hoping to take it one step further and find a milling that's "softened" (or smooth to some degree). The putter Brandon Matthew made below is beautiful, but it's more of a textured face. I'm looking for something that has milling, yet it's smooth.

As an aside, is the softened texture I'm looking for just achieved by sanding down the face a bit after it's milled? Anybody know specifically how it's done?

Probably just put on the grinder to smooth it down a bit.

I love that face milling too! I don’t know about the custom route but my Piretti 303 Midnight is very similar. Best feeling putter I’ve ever owned. Tried to capture it in this pic…

Wow!! Another beauty! Thanks for posting and sharing. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who appreciates something silly like a specific face milling. I had no idea the Pirettis came like this...

 

If anybody else has similar examples from other models/manufacturers, I'd love to see them! Bonus points if you've got a lefty flow neck!!

Double Fly Mill pattern is what you’re looking for. Piretti would be my top choice, their milling is incredible. Swag has some good options as well, although you’re gonna have to find one on the secondary market.

Byron Morgan called it his Tuna Milling. Custom is cool, but it shouldn't be that difficult to find a decent condition Scotty Cameron Studio Stainless Newport 2.5, or at least one you can refinish.

In LH decent ones are 600+ if you're lucky. At that point do a custom for a few bucks more and get something cool.

Yeah, it's almost impossible to find any in LH, and none of the common refinishers I've reached out to like BOS or others on instagram can commit to replicating the original milling pattern on it. Looking for the super smooth finish.

It looks like a standard fly cutter face milling, and then a second pass with different parameters to create the "deeper" pattern. After that, its either put on a bench grinder to smooth it out, but I'd probably just do it with sandpaper so it wasn't done unevenly.

Incredible putters! And I'm with ya on the flow necks. I had to pick up a random putter with a plumber's neck as a short-term replacement, and I'll never settle for anything less than a flow neck again

TPM does a great job with shallow milling and feel off the face... I still use one of his from when he was under mizuno and love it.

I got this one off the BST maybe 5-6 years ago for under $400 😊

Mine was a BST as well... seems to be a great spot to get them when they are still in great shape (seen some on ebay that have been through the ringer)

Looks like goodwood is possibly looking at adding this as an option, unfortunately they don’t really make a lefty flow neck though…

Yeah based on his story right after I posted, it is very much an option if you ask. I just ordered a new putter, but they’re on my shortlist for when I’m buying a new one. Especially with this finish available.
