On Monday I put together a foursome of coworkers. I suggested we play Broadmoor because it is one of the few flat courses in Asheville and is not too challenging. Two of the players in the group had only one season's experience in the game. The Lefty though can play.  From time to time I tee it up with these cats so I am not viewed as one who only plays with better players. I also like to help their games. They drink lots of beer and laugh.  Due to the two newbies taking many times 4 or more shots to get on the dance floor on the par 4's I was unable to get into any flow. I had three good birdie looks inside 15 feet and once again missed them all. The putting slump continues. I shot an 8 over 80. Lefty had an 82 and the newbies both were north of 100. Regardless of scores a good time was had by four dudes who make the member experience that much better at BFCC. ⛳

Since we've mentioned Pat Mahomes Sr, here's a tidbit.  Patrick Mahomes II was born 11 days before Kirby Puckett's last game  - the one in which his jaw was broken by a Dennis "El Presidente" Martinez pitch.  Pat Mahomes Sr was a teammate of Kirby at that time and pitched in that game.

The groups first shots of the day went airborne at 3:30 PM. It was a late start today. Thank goodness it stays light these days way past dinner time. I sputtered out of the gate making bogey's on 3 of the first 4 holes. Then all of sudden everything came together. I made a par on 5 and then had back to back birdies on 6 and 7. I continued to play extremely well for the remainder of the round. I haven't hit that many excellent approach shots in weeks and I had fabulous touch with my wedges when I missed greens. My putter FINALLY woke up and that enabled me to make 4 birdie putts. That kind of performance on the greens doesn't happen to me. I am calling it now....putting slump officially over. 😃  I didn't three putt today and I didn't make a double. I shot a two over 72. My round today moves into my career Top 5 at BFCC. 

 

The course was very green. The fairways were lush. The greens were soft and receptive Stimping at a manageable 10.  My swing was on and I took advantage of the conditions. Coming up the 17th fairway I ran into a trio of autograph seekers. I told them to meet me at the clubhouse bar and I'd buy them drinks because I was surely going to be celebrating this fine round. 🏌️‍♀️

But besides me not being able to run fast or long I know me. If basketball dad got in my face cussing etc for calling a foul on little Johnny the human defecation would hit the rotating air mover I would knock him out. As I was typing this it just came on TV wanting baseball umpires for school and Dixie Youth League baseball

When our son was growing up, I coached his baseball team from youth through American Legion (high school age).  I absolutely loved coaching the players, but I absolutely hated dealing with some of the parents.

In uncle rico football, this kid was like our 5th string QB, really nice kid but barely capable of completing even a screen pass

 

His dad comes to practice one day to talk to our coach, he’s like, “why isn’t my son playing more?!”

 

Coach says, “ok, watch….”

 

He has our starting QB, kid was like 6’3 could sling the ball a mile, throw a pass to a receiver sprinting 50 yards toward the post.

Walked 18 yesterday at Occoneechee.  63 degrees, partly sunny, very little breeze.  Played a white/gold combo of tees around 5550.  47/48 = 95.  11-14 fairways, 40 putts, 3 balls rinsed.  Greens are healing from aeration but were still bumpy and inconsistent with ridge-like areas still effecting the roll.  I guess it should even out and not all bounces are bad but man it seemed like I had a few deflections go off the mark.  Oh well... 

Got stuck behind a 3some and a 2some (playing out of 1 bag😠) and the 1st 3 holes took 35 minutes.  #4 is a longer Par 4 with water so rather than watch them (and continue seething🤬) I skipped past them to #5 and sailed from that point.  After finishing the 18th, I hoofed back to 4 which is a pretty good walk across fairways and thru some trees.  As it was around 7PM the course still had a few players but I don't believe I bothered anyone on my quest.  Rewarded myself by parring the hole!😁

My last 5 rounds here are 95, 95, 94, 93, 95.  I am not good but at least I've been steady!

Coached youth sports for 15 years.  Stopped for one year and sat with the parents.  Started coaching again the next year.  Could not take it.

 

Now for a golf nerd alert.  As an old guy with some niggling (and large) sports ailments a guy I know had mentioned he was TPI certified.  I thought about it, but never did it, then last week I was like, "Why not?"  So I did the Titleist Performance Institute grading.  He had me do a series of movements, not to pass/fail, but just to get a base number for a couple of things.  Flexibility is either joint driven or muscle driven, which makes sense, and so I had to do (I believe) 16 actions to test mobility and balance.  Then he plugs the info into the app, and voila, the client gets something.

 

Not surprisingly after three lower back surgeries I stunk at back rotation and pelvic rotation.  And suprisingly to me, he laughed at my wrist rotation it was so bad.  Mind you, there is no club in hand, it is simply, "Do as much as best you can and I will measure it."

 

After all the numbers are input, the TPI app spits out exercises to improve those weaknesses.  It was really interesting.  I don't know what the average person gets, but the three main things were exercises to improve the back mobility, the pelvic rotation and stretching the hammies in two different way.  The longest exercise is to actually stretch out my wrists, no joke, I have a 3 minute exercise just for my wrists.  I got 30 minutes of exercises to work on hammies, rotations at all spine levels, wrists, and ankles. 

 

It was pretty inexpensive, $100, and honestly, I am going to commit to doing the main exercises and check it out three months from now to see if it helps.  Not so much my golf game, that is what it is, but my health and comfort.  Knowing most of you are fitness guys, I thought you might find it interesting as well.

   NCLancer, T Money,  and touch will be teeing it up together in three weeks at a course in North Carolina to be named later. I have had the distinct pleasure of playing with 3 WRX'rs so far (puttingforthe8, NCLancer, and Conrad1953) and NCL will be the first one to play with me a second time. I am looking forward to playing golf once again with the couple who are huge Duke Blue Devil fans.

Man, reminds me of the old Yonkers raceway, they made that a casino too. Would never set foot in there, can’t imagine the nature of the clientele 🤣. Hey to each their own but I don’t think bringing casinos does anything positive for the community.
