Good afternoon Loungers!  Just back from 18 holes on a cool morning in August.  It was 61° when I left home this morning....crazy for August.

I had wanted to play with my scramble team today but unfortunately they all had other obligations. Instead I will be playing with three of our caddies. It's a little less hot today compared to yesterday, but still kind of humid. 83* with 60% humidity. 

Last week cart #48 got me a 78. What will #38 bring me this afternoon? 

Our first shots take to the air at 3:10.

One of my great regrets ... Merle used to play Texas Station out here all the time. I never went to see him. And never saw him before he passed.

Townes Van Zandt is in my top 3 songwriters.

 

Gram, Townes and Tom Waits. Not a single bad song among them.

On a different note because in my Youtube music loop, Tom Waits "Tom Traubert's Blues" came up.

 

 

Tom Waits is - far and beyond anyone else - my favorite artist. It's not even close. I love all music from all genres but Tom ... Tom is a completely different level. 

 

I heard him for the first time when I was working in a little pizza shop in Raleigh while I was at NCSU - Lily's Pizza. The environment was all indie steez and we could all bring in CDs to play the soundtrack for the night. I was usually bringing in, like, stoner metal at the time. Kyuss and the like. One fella brought in Tom's "Heartattack and Vine" and I was like "Oh my god, what is this? This is amazing."

 

Thus began my 30 years-ish obsession. 

 

About 10 years back, mom was doing some cleanup at the house I grew up and came upon a St. Christopher pendant of my dad's. She called me and was like "I was cleaning up and found this pendant. Your daddy bought this before he went to Parris Island and wore it through all his time in service. Do you want it?"

 

I was like "JEEZUS MOM, YES." There's a line in that song ... "I've lost my St. Christopher." The traveling saint. It always stood out to me well before that happened.

 I have been a Waits fan since the beginning where he played as much guitar as piano

 I probably have everything 'til " Frank's Wild Years"

 

For me, he hasn't been as interesting once he got to doing soundtracks , plays with the wife and  experimental stuff that Captain Beefheart was doing in the 60's

 

Nighthawks and Small Change are two  that I still listen to often

One of the things about being a multi-talented artist is you evolve in a way that might diverge from " what brung you there"

 

That is fine by me , I appreciate what he has done

If he was a cocktail it might be 1 part Bukowski, 1 part Zappa with a dash of noir lounge

Chuck was a friend and old neighbor. Man, I loved kickin it on my old Hollywood steps and hearing stories from that gem. He was as cool as they come till the day he died.

 

One afternoon I'd gone out front and Chuck was there. 

 

"Hey man, I heard you playing music and was that your dog howling with it?"

"Hahah yeah, Les likes to sing. Sorry if that disturbed you."

"Naw man, that's cool. That's a cool. A musical dog. I like him."

Kathleen did have a big effect. 

 

As much as I love the records prior; Rain Dogs - all over Down By Law - and Mule Variations are my two very favorites.

 

I got to see him in Dallas on his Glitter and Doom tour back in 2009 I think it was. He played "Invitation to the Blues" and I said to the former Mrs. aenemated "Ok, I can die now. I've heard this song live."

... How many times had she performed Easy Money? But it is like she is singing for the first time. As a thespian I have always loved a great story and then add music that can stand on it's own?

Chuck was struggling his last few years. But he was playing at Piano Bar and Hotel Cafe in Hollywood all the damn time.

 

Pretty stoked I could call him a friend.
