It is ironic that you chose a picture of Vincent Schiavelli. My good golfing friend Larry, who is a producer in LA, was good friends with Vincent.  He was invited to all of Vincent's dinner parties, until the guy went to Italy, wrote a cookbook and passed away at an early age.

That doesn't even take into account the wind chill. 

 

I've waited on a platform for the el in Chicago in February. (Sure you have too!) And still the coldest I've ever felt was walking out of the Suncoast in Summerlin late at night in January.

While not as hot as you, I can still relate. I’ve lived in Texas my entire life and don’t recall a summer that feels as hot as this one. We’re used to 100°, but it’s been 105°+ for weeks on end with zero rain. Our trees are shedding leaves like it’s Fall. 
 

We’re getting a brief reprieve for the next 2-3 days with highs in the mid to upper 90s, but back to 105ish by the end of the week. Just brutal.

Walking to the radio station when the windchill was 20 below or lower, they would rope off Michigan Ave because the snow almost made it a whiteout and it was easy to lose your footing. I posted this before but the worst day was when I had rehearsal and the temp with the windchill was 83 below zero. Pre mobile phones and I got there to read the note on the door "Rehearsal cancelled due to dangerous cold. You shouldn't even be reading this!"

... I am sure it is relative but exactly the same for you. Normally I can deal with 115* or higher a couple days in a row because it always drops back down to something like 103-106*. But this year it has been a cumulative effect and just walking out in 115* is brutal hot. July at over 110* for 29 out of 30 days took toll on all of us I think.

First time I was ever in Chicago was for a layover from here back home to NC for Christmas. Had a while so wanted to go out for a smoke. 

 

Stepped out front of O'Hare, immediately was like "JEEZUS GOD ALMIGHTY" and looked up at one of the info boards and it said something like "Temperature: Whatever it was; Feels Like: -28."

 

I was a fierce, dedicated smoker back then. I turned around and went right on back inside. 😂

 

(Still not the coldest I ever felt. Maybe because I didn't have to walk 500 yards to my car through the razor blades of cold desert wind.)

Whoa fellas!  It’s OK.  The only pics I have are about 11” long and then it’s the floor as the background.

 

I fired an 82 yesterday and can comfortably say I hit about 70 good shots. Posted a 77 today and can only think of two bad shots.  I guess I am not very good.

 

The Mrs won low net.  The beauty of that is she had no idea.  Pretty sure if she knew, she wouldn’t have.

 

Wr had a +capper walk off because he wasn’t playing well.  I did beat him, and how effing petty.

Well it was a full day at the course.  I went in not expecting much considering I was trying 2 new fairway woods, plus it was the first round with 2 of my Titliest irons (5 & 6).  I went to the range early to try and get used to the new fairway woods.  After I felt semi confident, I said I would hit 3W (16.5*) on every hole.  
 

Things started off good, piped down the fairway.  Good second, horrible 3, good fourth and just missed my bogey putt.  The rest of the front mainly consisted of decent drives mostly finding the rough, I took my medicine each time and for the most part played the holes well.  I was disappointed with 4 duffed pitch shots, and only a single 3 putt.  I didn’t have a single penalty stroke on the front, and I’m happy I didn’t follow up a bad shot with another.  Had 18 putts.

 

On the back nine, I had 4 penalties.  The first was I pulled my tee shot right and saw it bounce twice on 11, but neither me or the guy I played with could find in the rough.  The other 2 were just bad drives.  The other was my second shot on 13.  I had a bad lie in the rough, I would have hit a 9, but I there was no way I could carry the bunkers and fescue, so I hat a 7, and just didn’t clear the fescue.  Stopped the bleeding with a 1 putt from 12 feet.  I felt my bad holes were solely due to the bad tee shots (LB), except for 18.  On 18 my tee shot found the fairway, hit 5W down the fairway, my third was a 6i just short right of the green.  The pin was all the way back shelf.  I thought I hit a good pitch, but it rolled back towards the front, ended with a 3 putt.  On the back I had 16 putts.

 

So overall I was 5 shots better than my last round, in fact I have shot better each round.  Still work to do on the long game, biggest thing effecting my scores at this point.  The rest of my new set should be in this week, so will be getting used to them on the range this week.

... I almost forgot what that is like. I hated losing balls a few inches into the rough back in Chicago after a few rainy days. While we can get excessive roll on a marginal shot that can find trouble, the "rough" isn't much different than the fairway here in the desert. Since driving is the weakest part of my game, one day on and the next off, landing in the rough can actually be better than the fairway in more than a few instances. For my game, I am guessing it is about a 2 stroke difference on average getting to play in these friendlier conditions.

I really enjoy your round recaps, NJB! Very relatable! I’ve struggled way more than I thought I would coming back from shoulder surgery. I’ll keep working, but I think I just have to accept that I won’t get my distance back and I wasn’t that long to begin with.
