2023 HSBC Women's World Championship (Mar 02 - 05)

Good win JYK....by no means a dominant performance but she did what she needed to do in the final round. It's tough to judge performances in these weather interrupted tournaments as there can be excuses for inconsistency. Nelly and DK had their chances but tough conditions to come from behind. Good finish by Jeeno and Saso to score top 10's. Lydia had a poor tournament by her recent standard. Her inconsistency with her driver is still a concern. I like many others had trouble putting up with the commentary especially Burton and I guess she will be back in 2 weeks for the Aramco series tourney 😧. Hopefully they get better weather.

Bad weather bothered different people differently; Lydia clearly didn't enjoy herself this week.

Fortunately, she built a wide enough moat on Rolex Ranking; she should still have around half a point advantage over Nelly on Monday.

Not quite the start to the year for Minjee. Eight rounds in the book, and only one under par.

I didn't get to catch much of the final round but what I did see over the previous days was JYK just pouring them in from literally anywhere.

She's a freakin Terminator when she's on. Great seeing her back winning after the injury ... even if I was hoping Nelly's pull it off. 🙂

It's amazing how good these players are in tough conditions. Go out and shoot even par for four days in the rain and you get a share of 48th place. Shoot one or two under for four days and you don't crack the top 10.

All hail the Queens; Jin Young, Nelly, Ayaka, Danielle and Allisen!

I watched her first round, her game is fine tee to green, just as it has been.  Her putter has totally left her and it's all mental, you can tell.  I watched her miss like 3 very, very, very short puts in consecutive fashion.  Very hard to watch, she needs to play her way out of that somehow.  You can tell that she doesn't even expect to make them and that's as bad as it gets!

It's quick, two bad tournaments and Minjee dropped from Rolex #3 to #5 promptly.  It doesn't take much for her to drop to #7 after the Drive On Championship.

Rolex Ranking is shaping up nicely with Lydia, Nelly and Jin Young bunched up at the Top:

1 Lydia Ko 8.59 386.55 45
2 Nelly Korda 8.10 283.56 34
3 Jin Young Ko 7.38 265.68 36

They're really close to each other; one tournament and the positions could flip flop easily.  Lydia is only 17.0 points ahead of Nelly, and Nelly 22.0 of Jin Young.

This is what it should be, with the best players at the top.

I would never invite you to a party; you're such an uncanny party spoiler!

Sorry, but it's not a party, it's elite sport.

And yes, I'm not going to be popular on here with my last post.

Oh well.

Edit, but adding, I have plenty of posts appreciating women's golf on here.

Just don't agree with Argonne's post on this occasion, and I respect him as one of the best posters on here.

I can see JYK, Nelly, DK, and Lydia making a run for the top this year..

JYK looks to have recovered fully from last year..

Nelly is good as ever, just need to make some putts..

DK looks good overall with "Look at Me" attitude..

Lydia, what can I say.. She's awesome..

Nelly's ballstriking was wonky this week. She hit some drives that were definitely un-Nelly like. Short game was spotty at times.

Since there is no tournament this week, I will put this here.

There was plenty of movement by LPGA players in the Rolex Rankings this week:

Jin Young Ko made the most important moving jumping 2 spots from 5-3.
Daniel Kang jumps up four spots 18-14
Ayaka Furue moves up 28-23
Allisen Corpuz leaps into the top fifty 51-36, as does Eun-Hee Ji 54-44
Outside the top 100, Elizabeth Szokol bolts up 46 places 153-107

Nelly Korda and Ashleigh Buhai are the only players to have top ten finishes in each of the first 3 LPGA tournaments of the year.

Big fan of JYK and so glad she is back, fingers crossed that she is actually fully healthy.  The broadcasters touched on it a bit and relayed the message that she is indeed fully healthy.  If this is the case beware because JYK has Nelly in her hip pocket mentally.  Not just from this tournament that was just finished, but from going back to the CME title over a year ago.  I like Nelly, she is great to watch, never liked LK at all so I am biased admittedly, but I can respect the fact that she is great at golf and on the mental side.  Should be a fun season, I just hope that Minjee can get rid of her deamons!

I agree with these and have written posts similar to these; but I'm not too worried about it from Nelly's perspective.

Jin Young has been a proven star before she joined LPGA in 2018 and has been a bona fide LPGA super star since 2019.  Nelly, on the other hand, was a nobody until 2021 season.  2021 was the beginning of their rivalry; Nelly owned the first half and Jin Young the second half.  2022 fizzled because both had health issues.

No question, Jin Young won the first battle of 2023, but with an asterisk mark.  The weather was bad and Nelly still new with her TaylorMade equipment.

I'd give more weight to the Drive On Championship coming up in less than 3 weeks.

Do you think it might have something to do with her equipment change?

I would say the weather was the biggest factor.
