What are the JDM GOATs?

NavyMU

Recommended Posts

I'll keep this simple..I live in Japan and frequent a few great pre-owned shops. I buy and sell a lot of clubs, all for personal use not profit, because I like trying stuff and may have a problem. Anyway, what can I get here that I can't elsewhere, and what JDM old school GOATs (greatest of all time) 😉 do I need to be looking for?  Looking for playable favourites, not unusable samurai blades. Let's debate, have fun!

I'll have to say Miura and Epon.  Look at the halo effect it still has despite not being as good as before.  And use this forum as a small indication of halo effect... most JDM threads always mention Miura or Epon.

Not yet, saw a few sets, but don't feel comfortable with the source. Just a matter of time. Regular CB-1007 for now.

Thrilled to be following your journey. I was lucky enough to track down a mint, original set of 1007 Y Grinds 4-P recently. They are fabulous with one exception. They are custom finished from MCW. See attached pic for the finish comparison from MCW menu.

I thought I could see the difference in finish from the seller I bought from but I pretended I couldn't. LOL.

I've got CB-1007 Y Grinds and CB-57s. My favorite set of Irons.

First swings tomorrow, can't wait. Not Y-grind but they are super sexy.

First round in the bag. Bottom line, they are staying in the bag. Dispersion left/right was very narrow and a big positive for me. Distance control will take a bit of time. Best analogy for pure hits was something I read about hitting a baseball pure with a wooden bat. Doesn't clank and fly like an aluminium bat, just feels solid with great flight. Best thing for me was when I thinned a few, they went straight with minimal yardage jump.

Happy, but need to slow my roll because I just found some 2014 Kuro's with Nippon 120 shaft that I love for dirt cheap.

Focusing on Miuras for now.

OnOff Kuro 2015 Update: they look better than pictured. Awesome design, and nice general feel. Surprised by the thick IMO top line. For lovers of this club, your thoughts? Almost game improvement thickness, but it's been a while since I stood over a true game improvement.

Lack of offset and face view are otherwise great. It does look like you can swing hard with it and all is ok. We will see soon...

I recall the top line being slightly thicker than expected, but I'm a bit of a hacker so actually appreciated it. From memory they are still quite slim compared to a true GI iron (like my old set of G400's). Then again, the overall size and multi-material make up of a true GI iron likely gives the impression of an even thicker top line!

Almost bought a set a few months ago, but they'd have a hard time kicking the Tourstage MR23 US Spec CB out of my bag..

I was just chatting to a friend about this!  Fantastic looking PCB.  Compact.  Not the most forgiving but the feel when you hit it right...  Orgasmic!

Can't have a JDM GOAT conversation without mentioning the Tourstage Z101s.

These are fantastic irons as well.  Played a set for a while.

These (OnOff 2015) are incredible, I mean nuts. I was hitting my 7 iron 165-175+ with beautiful flight and great feel. I couldn't do that with my 2019 T200s consistently. About a full club difference than the CB1007. Now to the trouble, I am somewhere between a strong draw and hook with these when I get too loose. They do have a shaft that I don't normally play, DG S200, so I just ordered another set 😉 with my gamer Nippon Modus s120.

Any thoughts? My gut is that it has to do with what appears to be the increased offset. Contact is just incredible, but I need to figure out the overdraw. I guess it could be lie as well, the toe seems high at address. I will definitely keep a set of these, best shaft for me, and offload the others.

Miura CB1007 are a definite keeper, and I think I will have a set of Kuro 2015s too.

Eyeing some Epon 302s, and have a set of Miura 501s on the way. Thoughts on the Kuro 2015 offset are appreciated.

I'd be interested to hear how you get on with the other shafts once you get them. I can't imagine there would be a huge difference in offset between those and the T200's (but can't locate specs easily). Well, not enough to produce a hook/overdraw. If it doesn't improve with the shafts I would definitely look into the lie angle.

I presume the lengths are the same? Swing weight?
