Mizuno JPX 923 HMP or HM (does size really matter)

Just curious about the JPX 923 HMP and standard HM irons. The Pro's are considered player's distance iron but with the game improvement forgiveness. Is the size of the Pro's that much noticeable that a higher handi cap golfer wouldn't want them. The numbers I've seen are so identical as I'm surprised Mizuno has 4 JPX models and they only have 3 other models, 221, 223, and 225.  I'm also curious as to how Mizuno keeps the price well within reach with the JPX line when so many other brands are getting out of reach. When I hear about Mizuno I tend to think more about tradition as they have always been a work of art, very clean and a feel like no other iron and even buttery.

Without going overboard with all the advertising you see from other big name brands Mizuno's research and technology seems to be pretty impressive when I look at there key features, I know when talking about under rated clubs Srixon, Cobra and Wilson come to mind but for such a popular brand especially when it comes to irons I would think Mizuno would get more love. I hear so many stories about quality control with certain brands but isn't that with everything now since the help of post covid days. Also with so many brand are coming out with jacked up lofts gapping issues would be more common. Mizuno does seem to have some of the best iron choices for every golfer needs but it also makes for harder choices to make.

Most pro golf club reviewers are good players, that find the center of the face more times than not.  Given that, the Pro model would be the obvious recommendation if you are likewise a good player.  If you are more average, the larger head of the standard model will provide more MOI and thus, more forgiveness.

These are cast clubs, so they are cheaper to make than forged.  Mizuno makes the best sounding and feeling cast clubs around, though, so unless you are a forged zealot, I suspect you will like them fine.

I played the ZX5s.  When I used the Mizuno Shaft Optimizer, the guy asked what club I currently hit to determine what head to use.

He used the HMP.  The MSO is only 3 swings, but I liked it well enough to go back a few weeks later and get fit.

I thought a little more forgivesness is a good thing, so hit the HMs instead of the HMPs.  But when I got them outside, I hated the size difference. They felt huge.  I hated the look of them and how they performed. I ended up going back to ZX5s.

I made mistake of not trying the HMPs. By all accounts they are all the good of the HMs in a smaller package.

I’d never considered myself picky about  head size/shape. The Ping G25s had been some of my favorite irons. But the HMs are really big.

As a diehard HMP player I found the forgiveness and distance aspect to be a wash between the two. Particularly since I only play six iron down.  For me it came down to the appearance of the two irons. I just prefer the thinner topline and smaller sole of the HMP's to the HM's.

IMO Mizuno just doesn't get as much love here in the states as do the normal big four Titleist, Callaway, Ping and TM. Their ad budgets swamp what Mizuno spends here in the states. Outside the US you'll see a lot more in play.

Yes, I did not see much difference between the HMP and HM performance-wise except slight less spin with HMP  (consistently around 250-300 less RPMs).  The HL did, as advertised, produce notably different numbers especially in launch and land angle - the gains there were more than could be accounted for in just the loft difference.  They definitely have the weight lower in the HLs.  I ordered a HL 6 iron (1* strong) to give one a test.  I usually do not go for larger heads but the HL numbers really exceeded anything else in my fitting by a pretty large amount.

G25's have a larger head size than the HM.  I've owned them both and compared side by side.

I played the 921’s for a while, both HM and HMP. I found the size of the HM to be off putting. They were so big I felt like I was swinging a shovel head on the end of a shaft.

I guess you won't be joining the G-men club either, then?   😑

JPX 923 HMP is slightly smaller and has much less offset so if the HM size was putting you off then stay away from the PING G425, G430 as they all have too much offset and just as big as the HM's.

I think it's more a result of how much I loved the 565s then ZX5s.  I got so used to them and love them so much that the clubsize is ideal. I thought going back to a bigger club would be easier than it turned out to be.

There's actually 5 JPX 923 models.  Tour, Forged, HM Pro, HM, and HM HL

I went for a fitting a few weeks back at TXG (mid handicap).  My current set is the TM Aeroburner.  So looking down at the HM Pro was initially intimidating, but I struck them really well.  Weirdly, my miss is typically a bad toe strike, but with the smaller head, I didn't miss on the toe side at all.  Maybe it was me focusing more hitting it square.

I tried both the HM and HM Pro (also bunch of of other irons) and the HM Pro came out on top.  It was giving me the ideal shot shape with good spin.  Can't wait to get these in hand.

The ZX5 MK2 was a very close second during my fitting.  Not just solid stats, but the feel felt very similar.  The only difference was the 923 HM Pro gave me a little more distance... which was really due to the stronger loft.  I went with the HM Pro because I'm used to the higher lofts coming from the Aeroburner irons.

I did a Mizuno fitting, play between 13-14 handicap, hit the HM, HMP and forged. the HM just looked/felt a little bulky to me, performance was very similiar, but I liked the look of the HMP with less offset better and it really came down to those and the forged. I was very surprised how forgiving the forged was and they felt amazing. I was getting very close results between the 2 going back and forth. While I liked the feel of the forged better, the HMP was a significant upgrade in feel from my Taylormade M3 irons and I went with them. I couldn't justify the extra 400 for the forged at the moment

My HMP came in 2 days ago, and of course it snowed and wen tdown into the 20s here. Can't wait to get them on the course next week.

I not sure if the ZX5's are identical in size as they were a nice size except for the rust color starting to show around the badge. I think the JPX line has the best looks out of all the new stuff for 2023. Curious if anyone has tried SteelFiber Aerotech shafts with their 923's as I have decided to go heavier in the shafts for 2023 as the Recoils I had were nice but when I got aggressive I lost some control. I ordered them on the 7th so at least another week or 2 as the wait is killing me.

I have played TM 790's, PING G710's, Cobra Tour MIM's, Srixon ZX 5's, PXG 0311 XP's, and PING i525. Nothing bad to say about any one of them as I did have my likes and dislikes as I just love trying out new stuff. I don't think anything has had me as excited as waiting on my Mizuno JPX 923 HMP's. Hopefully 2023 will be the year I stop searching and just work more on my game and practicing.

By the time they do arrive is when the weather should start warming up as I hope with all that I've read and heard about them they will give me good results with the feel, distance and forgiveness. I was very pleased with the results that had when I demo'ed them as I can't wait to get them out on the course

I am not experiencing any issues with HMP producing low spin. I am getting similar spin results I got with my old irons and what I produced with the forged in my fitting

All depends on your swing, Swing speed, angle of attack.

I had a fitting a few months back, and even JPX Forged spun too little for me. The lofts are super strong on the HMP. For me, I need more loft to help with Launch and land angles and spin. 80 MPH 7 iron.

@PSUgolf how are you liking your hmps? I was fitted for them but have some concern over gapping. Ive seen some say they have gap issues not just in the wedges. Currently game g425s.

Following.

I was fitted last spring for the HMP, SF 95 reg.  I tried the regular HM with the same shaft but the results were not nearly as good.  I can’t explain why because I typically go for forgiving irons (5.9 index but iron play is definitely my weakness).  The HMP felt amazing.  Numbers were good but spin was a little low (5000 for 7 iron).  I couldn’t justify the $1,400 price at the time so I moved on.

About a month ago I was at PGA tour superstore and did a very informal fitting.  This time, the forged came out on top. The rep at the store said he was getting a lot of returns on the hot metal pro because of not being able to hold greens because they were too low spin. Not sure I believe it.

I have both 923 HMP and HM irons. Both sets are bent 2* weak. I haven’t hit the HM irons yet and they sit new in the box. I’ve played several rounds with the HMP’s. Since they are bent weak I get plenty of spin. They are forgiving also. I might just sell the Hot Metal irons and just keep rockin’ the HMP’s.

I play the hmp in my longer irons bent 2° weak. I have absolutely no trouble putting spin on the ball. I can literally stop a 6 iron on the green. I am a bit of a digger, I hit down on the ball and compress it. I play a low spin ball as well, pro v1x left dash and AVX in the winter.

Still debating between the HM, HMP and Ping G430 irons at the moment.  Need to schedule a fitting to see what it recommended.  Coming from a combo set of G and i irons but may need a little more distance/ forgiveness as I'm getting older.  Big Ping fan but their pricing structure is really hard to fathom at the moment.

I’ve always loved the looks of Ping irons but I feel like Mizuno and Ping are geared for different players and conditions.

Ping’s have a lot of bounce and higher MOI mizunos have low bounce and MOI. As much as I want Pings, I feel like Mizuno works better because of course conditions where I live. Very hard dirt/clay. You cannot take proper divots and have to become more of a picker except for the rare days where there was rain and it’s dried out enough to not be too muddy to even play.

Plus I think the HMP is perfect for a lot of players. Lots of forgiveness but in a smaller package and less offset that’s not gross to look at.
