Not sure why these brands don’t let the players decide what equipment to use, long as it’s the brand they’re signed to.

why not Let him use a stealth or a sim if that helps him perform

Because TaylorMade wants to sell more Stealth 2's at retail not sell discounted Stealth's and SIM's.

I'd guess that TaylorMade has very few if any Stealth 1s or SIMs to sell. What inventory they did have was likely sold to retailers at a discount quite a long time ago. Morikawa playing a SIM may help Dicks, Golf Galaxy, or 2nd Swing move some old product, but it sure isn't helping TaylorMade. They've already made their money on those clubs.

At the end of the day, TM needs Rory / Morikawa / Scottie / Etc playing Stealth 2, because if they aren't, they are effectively signaling to the golfing public that you don't need to upgrade, or worse, the new product isn't an upgrade.

The pros get hand selected heads that have gone through strict quality control.  They probably x-ray them and measure a bunch of other things before they are made into clubs for the pros to try.  They certainly measure CT at different points on the face so that the pros get a CT just within tolerances.  And I would guess that Rory gets 15 to 20 clubs for testing purposes, if not more.

The question is whether TaylorMade saved any of the Stealth 1 heads for Rory just in case.

TM probably has a stock of M1 heads sitting around for just this scenario.

Priority 1 - Get Rory into Stealth 2

Priority 2 - Find any TM product that works before he starts flirting with Titleist/Callaway/Ping

It has to be a driver/woods, irons, and ball. I think OEMs want pros to play the driver and ball the most

You're absolutely right. Balls are the closest thing to recurring revenue OEMs can get and people replace drivers far more often than other clubs. Does TM even sell the RORS Proto irons anymore? I'm sure every OEMs sells a lot more P790 or Stealth like irons than MBs and CBs. They wants pros playing their drivers, balls, and putters, the rest of the bag isn't really suited for the masses.

They still have plenty of stealth in stock all listed for sale on Taylormades website. Hell they are even still selling the M4… If they wanted Rory in a Stealth 1 they put him in one.

Of course they do this for the pros but most companies are still just grabbing normal drivers of the production line. Every manufacture is different, but as the current rules stand if a club fails for being to fast it’s on the manufacturer. Since this is so brands like Callaway give their pros drivers with thicker faces so that it is harder for them to become non conforming. Obviously TM has a problem with this at the moment and the last thing a pro wants to be doing is changing a driver often because it becomes no conforming

Tmade should make 1-3 models of drivers. One that tiger likes. One that Rory likes and one that Colin or Scottie likes and sell those. Seems like a bad idea to make something slightly different every year without taking into account what their top dogs want.

Sounds like a pretty inefficient way for an OEM to operate. They already release 3 or 4 versions of of every driver they come out with (low spin tour model, base model, max forgiveness model, draw biased model). Now you want to double or triple that output? You're adding a huge amount of manufacturing complexity as well as complicating you're go-to-market strategy. More is not better.

Titleist made a pretty good driver and barely changed it for the next release because the players liked it so much.

Maybe he’s got a new armlock or long putter? Although I’m not sure a putter change would be that big a deal for this guy either. A 7 wood wouldn’t be that big of a deal and he wouldn’t need it out there.. if he hits the fairways he’s going for the par 5’s with an iron but for maybe the 8th hole when either a 5 wood or a 3 wood is fine to try and bounce it up and around the hill.

Titleist may be a little more focused on the better player while TM is focused on the fatter part if the customer distribution? No idea, but Titleist isn't immune. Patrick Cantlay was playing a Ping driver in Jan of this year...

As of Dec last year he was still in the TS driver despite Titleist releasing both the TSi and TSR series...

A whole bunch of the titleist staffers are playing older fairway woods. The original TS series seems quite sticky. Basically, tour pros are finicky and an OEM probably isn't going to find a consensus solution among their staff players that often. This situation is getting more pub than  necessary because Rory is the consensus "best driver of the golf ball" currently, but I think this happens quite frequently.

Cantlay doesn’t have an equipment contract with Titleist anymore right? Maybe when that ended he figured he needed to try something else and not play something for free from them. I bet Adam scott has thought about trying the new titleist stuff but probably went to tmade because a part of him didn’t want to validate the notion that titleist didn’t need to do a deal with him. I know he played the irons for a bit until he linked up with miura

You're right, Cantlay is a free agent, although he wasn't last year when he was bagging a 2 generation old TS driver. Perhaps that is why they parted ways?

The Rors proto aren't available on TM's website. Also I can for the most part recognize what driver a tour pro is playing and camera's zoom in on golf balls so often.

I initially read this as ‘Titleist may be a little more focused on the better player while TM is focused on the fatter player.’ 😂
