What etiquette fail really grinds your gears ?

It's beyond etiquette, but not marking your ball and/or knowing what brand and model ball you are playing. Them: "That must be mine. I am pretty sure I was playing a Titleist..." Me: "No, that's my ball. It's a Titleist Pro v1 and is marked similarly to the 5 or 6 other balls in my bag..."

Two guys playing exact same balls and neither of them mark it at all. I see this in my league all the time.

Our regular group fell into the typical COVID habit of not pulling it. (We've changed as one guy had two putts in a round hit the stick and not drop, and suddenly decided he needed it pulled.)

One day we only had three so a random single was paired with us, who liked the flag pulled. By about hole 5 I had to apologize and let him know that when one of us didn't pull it, it wasn't rudeness but just that our habit was to leave it in so we rarely even think of it.

Not respecting the course.  Fix your divots, rack the sand, etc.

Said something to a guy last weekend who didn't rack the traps after he was finished in them, his thought was "They pay someone to do that".  Randos on the course can be exhausting.

I'll bet he doesn't return his cart to the cart corral at the store either. Speaking of etiquette failures that grind my gears...

There are a handful of ticky tack things that annoy me - not raking traps, not filling divots, not repairing pitch marks, etc. - but the only thing that really sets me off is when one person seems to be allergic to pulling or tending the flagstick.

Nah man, all you have to do is ask!

I came back to the game post-COVID and don't care if the flag is in or not, so I leave it in.  If a playing partner wants it out, pull it out if you're closer to the cup than I am.  If not, just ask and I'm happy to pull/tend/whatever.

You are right...I am mainly referring to one particular common playing partner, thay may or may not be of blood relation to me, impact my view..especially since he knows we all prefer the pin out.

Guys playing music loud in their carts, i love music but like quiet on the course.  I love to hear the birds, nature when i am playing.  Is it an etiquette issue to ask to turn music off or lower it?

I agree, I know it’s been beat to death in recent years but I just don’t understand not letting the course be the one place in the developed world to be free of manufactured noise. You can have music everywhere else including your vehicle to and from the course. I don’t feel like it’s too much to ask let the sounds of nature or just quietness be the theme of the golf course.

If you can’t go a few hours without music put an ear bud in. That way the ones that don’t want to hear it aren’t forced to.

Honestly, not much bothers me on the course to any significant degree.

Play music? Fine - I don't do it myself, but go ahead. No problem.

Walk on my line or through line? Doesn't bother me one bit.

Stand behind me when I putt? Sure, go ahead.

Talk while I swing? As long as you're not intentionally trying to distract me, it's OK.

Some things I consider minor nits, but don't truly bother me too much:

- Not fixing your pitch marks (I'd prefer if you did, but if you're a decent enough player to leave regular pitch marks, you almost always do anyway.)

- Not raking bunkers - again, bad form, but I'm not going to raise a point with a stranger to point it out. Too many unpredictable personalities to warrant a confrontation in what is a recreational game. Not enough of a chronic problem where I play to worry about.

- Smoking? I don't particularly like it, but as long as you make a half-hearted effort to keep the smoke from blowing into my face, I don't mind.

The one thing that does get me is when a course is full and busy, is when the carts in the group ahead move like 5-year old soccer players. Bunch around one player's ball, the player hits, then all move to the next ball and repeat. Sometimes exacerbated by said carts moving backwards - surprisingly common. I walk almost exclusively, but recognize that when used properly, carts can speed the game. Often they do the opposite.

Countless times, I go to the public chipping/pitching green and people are hitting 60-70 yard pitches when people are on the green and flying balls all over the place. They are not aware or care that people are on the green and that they are coming close to hitting them. Also, a lot of the same places I go, there are large open areas where they can hit pitches to a bag or alignment stick as a target or hit those shots on the range, but they want to only hit to the green and flags when really they only need to focus on contact, landing area, and trajectories. The overwhelming vast majority of the time they can't control their shots at all. So, people are constantly dodging balls flying in.

They really think the public chipping green is their own green and don't know how to share it with anybody else and avoid conflict. It is like they are trying to start conflicts. People really need to go about their practice without adversely affecting everybody else's practice and show more respect for the rest of the people on the green too.  I get it if they want to hit long shots when nobody else around, but as soon as more people are on the green, they should be moving closer to the green and chipping or short pitches.

End of rant.

  • 2 weeks later...

Two things. Not repairing ball marks and dragging one's feet on the green. I played a beautiful course last week that was ravaged by these two things to the point of absurdity. And it's so easy to fix/avoid!!
