What etiquette fail really grinds your gears ?

I experienced the one today that always gets me: Standing behind the hole while I'm putting. 

I think I learned when I was 10 that you don't stand anywhere that could be distracting to a playing partner.

In general once a putt is conceded it doesn't matter if the player still takes the putt and misses. The concession stands. From a golf dot com article.....

 

Under the Rules of Golf, putting out after a concession is fair game; nothing forbids it. The concession stands regardless of the outcome of the putt. The one exception comes in four-ball match play, if a player putts out after a concession and doing so gives his partner an advantage. In that case, the partner (the one who didn’t hit the putt) is out of the hole, and the score of the player who stroked the putt stands for the side.

 

To stay on topic. Any player that doesn't take care of the course during play. Not repairing ball marks, not raking traps, littering on the course, not replacing/filling in divots, etc.

Not repairing ball marks is inexcusable to me. I feel like courses would be well served sending out marshals to casually spy on players and catch them doing this. It is something that I've seen afflict every type of course except those where caddies are not optional.

I think this is the one that affects playability the most. F'in sucks trying to putt on a green that's more pockmarked than a teenager's acne riddled face.

1. Easily the most aggravating is slow players with no self-awareness that aren't ready to hit when it's their turn. Most egregious are the ones that show up late or are unready to tee off at their tee time. 

 

2. Guys that drive carts wherever.

I play with the poster boy of poor etiquette. 

 

He stands directly behind you when you are teeing off. He takes massive divots on the tee box and fairway and very seldom does he replace them. He never fixes a ball mark on the green. He walks on your line on the green. He stands behind you while you are putting to get the line on his putt. . And he does all of this while running his mouth while other players are playing their shots or putting. He will pick up any stray ball he sees on the course. The joke with him is you grabbed that ball before it stopped rolling.

 

I go off on him from time to time but nothing changes.  I've played with this guy for years and he has never changed. He is part of a larger group I am in so I can't seem to get away from this guy.

 

He recently made the comment how come you always shoot better when I'm not playing? I replied I figure the difference is how many strokes you cost me because of your poor etiquette.

There are so many others, but I usually tell my playing partners at the start "anywhere but directly behind me, please"

But, proper golf ettiquete hasn't been taught to most players for the past 25 years ( since the Tiger boom ).

The industry just wants to "grow the game", ie: Rake in the $$$.

Can't offend the paying customer by asking them to behave a certain way.

Being hit into when the groups in front of you are the slow ones. If you see the group in front of you waiting on the tee box for the group in front of them every hole, don't hit into them and complain they are slow.

I've got a buddy who wants to constantly talk all the time no matter how far apart you're standing.

 

I guess he expects you to yell in order to carry on a conversation? Nothing worse for an introvert than someone who tries to force conversation like that.

When it’s their turn to play, they tee up their ball, take a few steps back, and then are suddenly struck by inspiration:
 

“I gotta tell you guys what happened on my trip last week. So there I was…”

 

No. No you don’t need to tell us. And especially not now. Even off the course I would probably glaze over, but this is much worse. Shut up and play. 😂

Simply put, I would not play with this guy.  Ever.  Sounds like massive tool.

standing behind the hole or standing directly behind you while you're playing a shot.

also, talking when you're about to hit

these are usually done by people new to the game and I will usually just not say anything because maybe they will accuse you of taking it too seriously or using that as an excuse.

yes, I try to be un-distractable but the reality is someone talking or walking in my line or behind me does distract me.

 

And golf is hard enough without having someone in your group making it harder. I avoid playing with these people at all costs.

I firmly believe that one of the best investments a club can make is hire a college kid and pay them $25/hr, give them one of these (https://parwest.com/product/par-aide-accufix-ball-mark-repair-tool-1092/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwy9-kBhCHARIsAHpBjHhA3JBfsP3SpaX53aaGm8OD0BDz0ZpVdqgzEzOpxDnyksgVgxqYT4YaAovaEALw_wcB), let them listen to tunes for 2-3hrs a day and just go green to green and repair marks every morning. 

 

While this should NOT be necessary, we all know that it would be amazing to be the first group off and see 90% of the ball marks fixed.

Don't get me started....

Sun flower seeds on the greens really gets me.  Finding cigar butts or ash on the green also irks me.  It's a sign that the person is a lazy SOB.  As for walking over my line, it's annoying and I will give the person a pass the first time but will remind them not to do it again.

It's the guys that drive golf carts as though they are all-wheel drive.  And they drive everywhere and anywhere.  BTW - when it's "Cart Path Only" that includes the rough!!!  

 

Ball marks on the green.  Lazy bums!

 

As for the others mentioned here.  Talk away, does not bother me at all.  Walk anywhere you want, behind me, on my line does not bother me.  Stand where I can see you when I putt, doesn't bother me.  I'm not looking at you, I'm not listening to you (I have selective hearing, just ask my wife!!), I'm playing golf.

Guess you probably haven’t experienced having kids yet. No matter what you do it always ends the same…walking onto the tee with 1 minute to spare. ☠️
 

Mine is “Sorry we’re holding you up, we play once or twice a summer….as the hacks are looking in the fescue for balls again.
