What etiquette fail really grinds your gears ?

I’m convinced there is a special place in hell for this guy.

I don’t know if this is an etiquette breach, but what really gets under my skin is when I hit a mediocre shot at best and some random guy starts with excessive praise with the good shot comments. By your standards maybe, but I’m hardly excited.

A few that really piss me off.

1. Not fixing ball marks

2. Not replacing/filling divots

3. Leaving tees in the ground on tee boxes.

4. Slow Golfers (Don't care if you're bad just be ready to hit)

How many times has he been assaulted on the golf course?

Three times this year. LOL

I try to avoid having to be in the cart with him. Last week in a threesome I rode alone. He sliced his drive into the fairway on the hole coming down beside us.There was a foursome in the fairway and one of the guys was addressing his ball, about to take his shot and out he goes into their fairway to his ball. I see the guy is making a wtf gesture. I just sit back in my fairway and watch the show. He gets out of the cart. Now he is thinking what club to use. He selects a club and addresses the ball. He stops and goes to the cart and grabs his brush to clean his club. Now he is back at his ball. He decides he has the wrong club. He selects a different club. Back to the brush. He takes his shot and off he goes. One of the guys from the other fairway rides over to him as he rides down our fairway and has words with him.

The other issues had to do with him picking up balls. One day we were playing and a person from the hole beside us hit his ball in the rough on our fairway. He sees the ball and off he goes towards it. I mention to him that is not his ball because I saw it roll there. He picks up the ball and says yea it is not my ball. He puts in in the cart and off he goes. The guy catches up to us and asks for his ball back. He says oh I didn't know it was your ball. The guy replies if you are going to say that at least next time wait until the ball stops rolling before you pick it up.

I experienced the one today that always gets me: Standing behind the hole while I'm putting.

I think I learned when I was 10 that you don't stand anywhere that could be distracting to a playing partner.

How would you know what is distracting to other people if they do not tell it to you or you do not ask? I mean, people get distracted by weirdest things.

Ok, this isn't a huge deal but one that bothers.  If I'm putting and it's not going to reach the hole and someone says NOPE, UH OH, thats not going to make it.  It freaking bothers me.  It's like yeas, we all know we can all see it.  You don't have to SAY IT.  My dad does it.  lololol every freakin time.  It makes me madder than actually leaving it short.

Nothing worse than sunflower seeds on the green.  So inconsiderate and if in your putting line, forces someone to literally touch and move something that you spit out of your mouth.

Surprised there are so many comments on where playing partners stand.  I personally try to stay out my partners field of vision, but as long as their not moving, over casting a distracting shadow over my ball or line, its all good when I'm hitting.

Standing directly behind me on the tee box when I hit.

Honest question for this one, how far back is "far enough?"

Every year that goes by my eyesight gets a touch worse and my prescription lenses make me feel like I'm drunk looking down at address so I play without them. I've been called a bad playing partner for not being any use looking for wayward tee shots and I've been asked to not stand behind them when they hit, by the same person (I'm at least 15 feet back, if there isn't that much room I just stand to the side and do my best to follow the ball.)

I'd prefer to not have someone directly behind me but as long as I'm 100% unconcerned that they could take a club to the face it feels like no big deal, understanding that some are more or less sensitive to it.

Side note, I only do this with my regular playing partners and will frequently ask or bring it up before the first ball is in the air... "Do you want me following the ball or off to the side? Because both isn't really an option."

As a lefty, most player's instinct is to move back and left of someone hitting, right into my field of view so maybe I'm just desensitized to it.

Self-centered people ...

They drive in the parking lot at 3:08 for their 3:09 tee time ...

They start their pre-shot routine AFTER everybody else has hit ...

They mark that 6-incher for a double-par ...

They never let anybody play through, because they're not waiting 30 seconds for you to hit 1 shots, you're waiting 5 hours for them to hit ALL their shots ...

They drive their golf cart EVERYWHERE because "grass grows back" ...

They spend 5 hours on the golf course because they "paid for their time" ...

Basically, they play golf like they live the rest of their life.

I could put together a list.  But ultimately, it comes down to two character traits - awareness and consideration.

If someone lacks awareness but are considerate, the awareness usually just comes from ignorance/inexperience and they'll get better over time as playing partners.

If someone lacks both, it's going to be a slog and we're probably not compatible.

Slow groups that refuse to allow faster groups to play through, when they are clearly the hold up...no point if every hole is packed with players.

My main one is general disrespect of the course, driving a golf cart wherever, not repairing ball marks or divots, etc.

It's good to know about the standing behind someone, there's a hole at my home course that is directly into the twilight sun so I will oftentimes try to watch my partners' shots. I'll try and remember to ask if I'm bothering them.

There's also standing behind the line of the putt to watch the line if you have putt on a similar line.

With our normal group, we all do it. Technically it's legal within the rules (since we're competing and not partners). But it's poor etiquette.

But I'd never do that to a stranger as I know it can be considered distracting to a lot of people.

---------

Talking during someone else's swing is obviously a no-no, but in our normal group we had a guy who was notorious for doing it. For him it was obliviousness. Thankfully with mentioning it to him enough times, he now actually pays attention and we've solved the behavior.

People touching what isn’t theirs.

This happened for the second time this year Saturday (first was my wife’s ball). There are 2 par 3’s back-to-back. The one I was playing had a back pin position, my ball went long and stopped about 3 yards from the other green when that group was teeing off. So I get up there go back where I think my ball is and it’s nowhere to be found. I ask “did y’all happen to see a ball back here?”, they answered with a guilty tone “nah man, we didn’t see one”. I kept looking while they putted out and went back to their carts. Finally I guess the guilt got to one of them and he came sheepishly back and said did you hit a Srixon?” I say yep and said “here it is man, sorry we didn’t know whose it was”. I just asked where it was and said that’s fine and he apologized again and slumbered away. ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW IS IT’S NOT YOURS!!

I even feel the same way about wedges or headcovers left next to the green. (I get some may not agree with this one but logistically it’s better to just leave it there). Just leave them there so someone can backtrack and find them without having to ask multiple groups and go to the club house to ask. I haven’t left a wedge in years but the wife did once and realized 2 holes later, the next hole wrapped back around close to that green so I told her we’d grab it then. Of course it wasn’t there and had to backtrack awkwardly asking every group if the picked it up. She learned something that day lol.

I think we've covered on course behaviors pretty well here but what about the practice green?

I can't say I'm a big fan of "shag-bag" guy these days.

Shows up on a busy weekend morning, dumps out 50 balls, and then just rakes and hits from the same spot on the fringe. Covers half the green with his balls (often ball marks as well) and leaves a nice dirt patch for the rest of us to enjoy.

And the thing that really kills me... this has to be the least effective way to practice chipping. Just like the rake and slap guys out on the range.

Getting snippy with me or hitting into me (or any other passive aggressive move) when I too don't have anywhere to go in front of me.  Also, just because your foursome is playing alternate shot, raking putts, inside the leather of two putter lengths and trying to play inside 2.5 hours, doesn't mean you have the right to run up my rear-end and get snippy about it.  I am all for maintaining pace of play, and I play quite fast, but I am not going to break my neck to play like a rabbit just so you can hit and then we both wait on the next tee box.

I have never had a problem with anyone standing behind me to hit aside from putting, and truly, not really when putting as I play enough scrambles to be comfortable with it.  I actually like someone helping me watch where my shot goes.  I don't have the best eyesight.
