First putting lesson...ever

Teebs

Recommended Posts

I'd got myself in a real mess trying to get lined up and trying to be 'open'. The result wasn't pretty and it was effectively putting side spin on the ball with a very inconsistent strike.

1hr with the Pro, getting back to basics and we started to see a few putts rolling end over end. Still work to do but the visio mat was great and I felt alot more comfortable by the end.

Comments welcome

whats your handicap?

How much time of the lesson was spent on learning how to control and judge distance control?

I've never had a putting lesson, but I'm sure it is time for one.

Did the lesson also discuss the type of putter and length you should be using?

IMO you're going to struggle until you fix the grip. Club should not be in your fingers and should run between the two pads on your right hand. That will keep it in alignment with the right forearm.

The way you're manipulating your right wrist seems brutal to me, and this will fix a lot of that.

EDIT: Here's a pic from Stan Utley's book which demonstrates this:

I agree with you and Stan 100%. But unless he has really huge hands (long fingers), it's gonna be really tough to copy that grip with the Super Stroke he's currently using.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

Great 1st lesson really.  Setup looks a lot better.  And absolutely the place you should start.

Or you could go the WRX way and try to take on 13 different things at the same time.

Looks like the towel and alignment sticks are there to help get better balance.  Really good stuff.

Hope you see better results in the near future.  Keep grinding.

Don’t you think a lot of the right wrist downcock he has is a result of the interlock grip he has? At least it looks like interlock to me. Wondering if reverse overlap would help out with alignment of forearms as well.

Overlap or interlock, if the grip is in the fingers (which it almost certainly is), that downcock will have to be necessary otherwise the toe of the putter will be sticking way up in the air.

I don't see why, It's just a matter of positing the grip in his palm vs fingers. I've messed around with Super Strokes and never had a problem, and don't have giant hands.

that is a method that works for some golfers. I am not saying that the OP shouldn’t change his grip but that it is more of a choice as putting setup is about choices and matchups.    Here is a reference to a putting instructor that discusses that it isn’t a must do this type of thing.

The difference is that the OP is clearly manipulating his right wrist in order to get the putter to lie flat. That's mainly due to how he's gripping the putter. IMO it would be very difficult to retain that angle in his wrist throughout the stroke. If he doesn't retain it, the putter head is going to do all sorts of crazy things. To me, his setup looks stiff and contrived, and not natural or easy.

In the 4 photos on the IG page, none of those guys have their wrists cocked in an odd position like this. Probably a combination of their height, arm length, putter length, lie angle and grip. I'm not so concerned with whether it's directly in line with the right forearm (although this grip does promote that result) as I am the manipulated position of his hands. My right wrist just hurts looking at that pic!

And Brad Faxon says to put it in the fingers. Do whatever you want. Be Athletic.

If you're getting lessons, don't come here for advice. Stick to your pro, they should have a plan.

Yeah I’m not a fan of lifeline grip. Lifeline always felt horrible to me. Fingers worked pretty well for tiger but hey, that’s the beauty of putting. Lots of ways to get it done.

Tiger loves to use his hands with every club in his bag. im literally the opposite. As you said  everyone is different.

Isn't the whole purpose of this forum is to ask and give advice? lol

I get asking for advice ... Like you said, that's why GolfWRX is here ... But why would you dedicate time and resources to a pro to take you down a journey, only to ask a bunch of people that have no vested interest for advice that could detour down a million different rabbit holes?
