Here is a link to a full series (3 videos) of Cowen's overall swing lessons - The Pyramid of Learning.  I like referring back to it when the swing gets off track.

look at the 12.25 mark in the 3rd video of the youtube series which shows an exercise for the right forearm rotation or spiral - to save people having to look through the whole series of videos - though it is all good stuff.

A very good video.

how did I miss this absolute gem of an instructor.   I created a thread about aha moments - cos I think he literally smashes what feel like a secret that people have kept from us hackers!

The golf swing is a continuous rotational circle away from you - now I understand why loop swing work for so many because you don't start then stop then start which creates inconsistencies.

Came across on YT, watched it a 2nd time. This time had real value to swing. The "pressure on the shaft" thing, really changed results. Harder to implement with longer clubs & big arcs but a bit mind blowing how much better everything worked. My miss is thin shots, or too left or too pushed. Rectified all three.. My swing is toilet water at the moment, have torn tendons, but was hitting in peak form with mid & short irons. I'm sold.

I'm a big Cowen fan, but I have no idea what he is talking about when he says "pressure on the shaft."  Can you elaborate?  (Similar to Mickelson's hinge and hold... never understood what to hold.... hold the hinge? The club?).

I'll try.

At p6, wrist fully extended and rotated a bit knuckle down. Think lead wrist flexed. To my mind Phil means keep wrist fully extended. At P6 that keeps shaft back and deep. Not a hold the lag move at all because forearm ends that.

The move from there is a CCW turn of forearm to get a palm down look at the ball. Like pushing ball into ground with palm of hand. The "pressure" is hand leading club tumbling downward into ball with the hand that  is powered by forearm rotation. It's a delofting move and not a "release the toe" move one might do to compensate.

Great to start with half swings and all your weight on lead side and rip at it. When it's correct you will see & feel it. Important not to stall out body rotation. Pound into ground but keep things moving with body angles that staying in flex. If you "stand up" it doesn't work at all because P6 was off to start. But the great part is it takes less effort to get same result, so easier to move other parts with more discipline. It reduces impulse to over swing, it demands a smoother mix of movements but power of forearm delivery, negates a bunch of wasted efforts and has better outcomes.

As "simple" as Cowen always seems to make things I always find myself confused by what he's actually saying.

I love this concept but the term "spinning" the forearm just doesn't register with me.

I believe he means that the right arm "spins" down and around to the ball as an attachment to the torso that is turning. Somewhere in the torso is the axis of the spinning.

Yes.  I think in this video mainly he focuses on both:

  1. don't let the hands fall behind what the torso is doing.  Keep up.  That means the hands are going to spin like a pinwheel down if done properly.  If you don't keep up, problems happen.  He explains that numerous times in Danny's video.
  2. Maintain RH wrist position from the very top all the way through impact.  Extended in a way such that when the club hits the ball your RH forms a backstop from which to divert all force forward towards the target....ie with pressure.

The LH on the other hand does completely release from lagged to fully unhinged at impact.  The face closes down through torso rotation, not through hand manipulation.
