Danny Maude and Pete Cowen, role of the right arm

Pete knows his stuff but he really doesn’t communicate very well and normally any kind of attempt at exchange in these types of vids results in frustration for the poor sod not getting what Pete wants him to get. His explanation of how to hit bunker shots on his dvd is literally dizzying. But I enjoy a crusty old bastxxx.

Yeah he definitely isn't known for his patience.

It's probably even worse for mortals like Danny Maude when Cowen is used to working with top level tour pros who can probably do what he's telling them almost straight away.

This is what I believe in and a former world #1 and 2001 British Open Champ agrees with me too.

As "simple" as Cowen always seems to make things I always find myself confused by what he's actually saying.

I love this concept but the term "spinning" the forearm just doesn't register with me.

I agree, i find it very difficult to understand his verbal instructions also.  But I have to say he has incredible Movement Analysis eyes.  And he makes some very interesting points about very minute details of the golf swing which bear consideration and taking time to try to understand what he is trying to convey.

Seems like there’s been a lot of YT instructors doing videos about rear hand wrist conditions since ProSendr has taken off on Tour. Pretty much everything Danny Maude was being shown by Pete Cowen is addressed by using the ProSendr.

Seems like the what all the “great”instructors do is have a few basic principles that keeps their students focused on their fundamentals and let their natural talent fill in the gap.

I firmly believe that Cowen speaks in a vague way so his players come up with their own understanding of what it feels likes to them instead of just telling them “I want your right arm to feel like it stays in external rotation with your right wrist bent back until half down then you will feel like your right arm goes in internal rotation to get the club back in front of you but you still must keep you right wrist back.”

Speaking in tongues frees up great players and frustrates not great players who just wants to know exactly how to do something because they lack the hand eye coordination to fill in the gaps.

That's probably true although some instructors (Bradley Hughes) have been talking about the importance of right forearm rotation for the last 15+ years.

Cowen has too, to be fair. In his Pyramid of Learning video (early 2000s) he talks a lot about the role of the right arm and pressuring the ball.

It can be confusing, but it's all dependent on the correct drill for the person trying to learn, Cowen has a few of them, the 'Axe Drill' is the signature one for this, then the flagstick/split hand drill, those are probably better to watch to understand, with Danny Maude he's giving a one to one with feedback, so harder to understand.

Just now, Nickc said:

Depends what you mean.

A slight lateral shift to the left (as Bobby Jones says - see video above) even before the back swing is complete - Monte's "bump" is fine!

Slight is the key word. It's what happens after the bump that matters. Bobby Jones also said that the hands should never forge ahead of the hip turn.
