Most of these kids could care less about CTE, because they view sports as their way to get out of the hood and will do whatever it takes.  I agree that they are athletes first and students second at these big time programs.  
 

My opinion with regard to CTE, is probably everyone who has ever played a sport probably has it, and I’m sure some who never have played a sport could have. I know I have had 2 concussions in my life that were confirmed.  I took many more foul balls off my mask, hard falls skiing and other things, so if my brain was studied after my death I’m sure it would show up.  I just don’t think the research has been around long enough to say for certain that sports is the only cause, could a person in 2 major car accidents show the same impact as a college or professional athlete.

... My youngest son was a chip off the old block. Extreme extrovert, always happy and outgoing. Never thought twice about any kind of public display of emotion. What I didn't know was he had some deep anger issues. Part of the problem was him being the best player at his position and not starting, however that was the tip of the iceberg because there was obviously more to it than that. 

... Football was an outlet for his anger allowing him to purge it out of his system, at least temporarily. One of the guys on an old golf forum that considered himself a football expert working for an NFL team took one look at my sons high school highlight film and said he could never play college football. Too slow and too soft. Fast forward to his jr year and this "expert" had a player from a high school team he was now coaching as a 2nd string dlineman on BD's team and "one of the toughest kids he ever coached". He wanted to know what this tough kid thought of my son and he said "You have no idea. He is an animal. Fun guy off the field but once he puts his helmet on he is just a beast". 

... I think I have told this story before but he transferred from a college in Iowa to Marian in Indy and as he said everyone was bigger, faster and stronger and he was intimidated. He transferred after his sophomore fall semester so arrived in winter. They were doing workouts but no team practice or contact. First practice they had a competition with D on one side an O on the other. Big wrestling mat with a towel wrapped in duct tape in the middle. Coach blows the whistle and you get to the towel and get it back to your side for a point. Lots of grappling and other fighting til this Tackle said "I'm calling out Derence Coach. Time for him to learn what Marian is like and he can tuck his tail between his legs and crawl back to where he belongs. We don't want him here." BD was almost in shock and then that anger took over". Coach blew the whistle, and he hesitated just a little to let the guy reach the towel first and grab it. BD grabbed the back of his hair, slammed his face into the mat with enough violence to break his nose with blood spurting everywhere, stood up and calmly walked back and dropped the towel on his side. 

... Dead silence and the Head Coach stood up and said "I have ONE thing to say about this... Welcome to Marian Derence" then shook his hand and the defense went nuts. This Tackle had a big mouth and nobody liked him, especially on defense. Not sure how it would have went over with a started everyone liked. 

... The point being, I don't know what kind of trouble he may have gotten into without that ability to release his anger on the field. I still have a hard time connecting my smiling happy son that will defend the little guy but turned into this animal with a helmet on. So football was invaluable in his life. Thankfully, he turned down a contract to play for the Colts when he finally looked into CTE.

Same here! I’m a Texas fan and as much as I hated it, I thought Alabama would win easily. I didn’t realize ‘Bama’s QB was that raw. The dude is fast, but he’s not SEC QB material. Even as bad as he was playing, once Alabama took the lead, I thought Texas would fold, as they have done for the past decade. But the Tide turned! 😉

We’re finally getting a break from the heat! It will be 96° today, but dropping into the 80s for the rest of the week - lows in the 60s and even 50s a little north of us. I shut my pool chiller off yesterday after running it every day since the beginning of summer. The water is cool enough to carry me through today.

 

It’s been one of the hardest summers I can remember - 2nd only to the summer of 1980 in number of days of 105°+. And no rain for 2 full months. Our trees have been dropping leaves like it’s late October. It’s supposedly to rain quite a bit this week. Bummer for playing golf, but we need it!

Pretty much what I was thinking. Just waiting for Texas to do their Texas thing. But they didn’t. 
 

I’ve never (well, for a long, long time) seen Alabama’s secondary get beaten deep so badly…….and so often. Ewers looks much, much improved this year. A couple of those deep balls just couldn’t have been thrown any better.

He definitely gets a lot of air on his deep throws and they fall right over the defender and into the receiver’s hands - at least last night. He had an incompletion that was one of his best throws. The play before they missed a FG, he took a shot in the end zone. Perfect ball over very tight coverage and hit the receiver in the hands. Coverage was so tight, I’m not sure the receiver could track the ball.

Yeah, I saw that one. The throw was just perfect, but I think you’re right, the defender’s hand looks like it blocked his vision.
