Cut shot = Fade?

Need some help on definitions. Are a cut shot and a fade the same thing?

 

I know that both work from left to right for a right-handed golfer. But, is a cut shot a higher, spinner dart throw?

They are the same thing. They are synonyms.

All fades are cuts, but not all cuts are fades. All slices are technically fades if you're optimistic enough too. 😂

But yeah, it's generally synonymous. The only time you'll hear them referred to slightly differently is when someone talks about a "smaller" fade, which is sometimes called a cut. It's a like a sinker and a two-seamer in baseball; technically the same pitch but differentiated aesthetically by the difference in drop/sink vs. lateral ride and how spin axis/seam orientation varies slightly. This is all perfectly normal and not a sign of neurotic pedantry at all. 😆

I just had an acid flashback of the SAT.  I just threw up a little in my mouth.

Modern lingo most players refer to “cut” now for a left to right shot for the right handed swinger 

The senior group still refer this same shot as a “fade”

A flop could be viewed as a type of cut shot, I do when cutting the legs out from underneath that ball.

I've always determined it thus...

 

If it lands in the fairway, it's a fade/cut. 

 

If it lands in the right rough or worse / off the planet, it's a slice.

I always think of "draw" and "fade" as being stock shots you'd play everywhere/anywhere if you could, meaning basically they're small amounts of curvature. Either would work as a stock shot. 

 

I think of "cut" as the opposite of "hook" as in, yes, we sometimes go to extremes to hit shots in golf but generally we wouldn't want to be "cutting" or "hooking" our stock shots. 

 

To me, a "cut" means I'm cupping my wrist and picking the club up more vertically. I might "cut" certain types of wedge shots from the rough for instance.

A cut is therefore an extreme thing that deals more with the feeling/motion (of holding off) where as a "fade" still has a natural release and is more about the ball-flight subtly tailing in one direction because of a very small delta in face & path.

I like the term slinger.  Check out Mac Boucher on instagram  He demonstrates a good slinger

Seems to me that the cut is the stroke; the fade is the effect.

I think a cut is a fade that takes distance off.  Ie “cut” a few yards off.  A proper fade isn’t losing yardage.  It’s just falling right.
