Ping Combo Sets

You can certainly combo these, but i would recommend you try them first if possible.  The 525's and the 430's in the long irons are going to be pretty similar as far as forgiveness is concerned.  Haven't tried the 230's so can't comment.  With their lofts available in power spec, "nuetral", and retro spec you can get the gapping that you would need for lofts easily enough.

Just adding to this, I'm currently in i230s and the launch and control gained is incredible......I'm slower and don't have a need for stronger lofted irons i.e. 430s

A lot depends on hdcp and speed also

I've got i230 short irons and 525 long irons

I spent about 90 minutes with our ping rep on Friday. Hit the i230’s, 525’s, and 430’s.  I had to insist to hit the 430’s - HDC and performance with the i230 and 525 didn’t suggest the “need” for the 430.  In the end, I liked all three but fit different reasons.   The rep really didn’t give any feedback on a combo.

Unfortunately, every demo club is a 7 iron.  My club does very little ping business and only has a couple 430’s as demos.  I have been carrying one of the 430 demos lately and use it whenever I can.  It seems ridiculous easy to hit.  My biggest concern is the W, 9 and 8.

how did you gap the two models?  Did you use power specs (or something else) to get a 4 to 5 degree difference?  Or are the 525’s “hotter” club face and you only need 1 or two degree gap to get something in the 10ish yard distance gap?

My hdcp is currently 0.6 index with a driver SP around 105.  I am a relatively low spin and low launch player.  Spin was about 500 rpm lower with the g430 vs 525. I230 were another couple of hundred rpm’s more than the i525.  G430 launched the highest and had the steepest landing angle.  Total carry and runout were very similar between 525 and g430.

i have played pxg’s for the past 7 years. Currently in the gen 5 P’s.  I am really looking to improve mid irons.  Higher ball flight and greater consistency.

thoughts recommendations?

What's your Speed and hdcp?

What are you generally looking for in an iron? Do you like/love a player's look , are you a finicky golfer like me and don't want a clicky iron(525) ?

Index 0.6 / Driver SP around 105. I have used to play mostly Titleist blades or CB’s back in the day.  Switched to PXG “P’s” about 7 years ago (have had a couple of different generations).  I really don’t mind some offset and a little thickness top line (within reason). Mostly seeking help / change in the mid irons - higher launch and some greater forgiveness/consistency.  8 through W needs to have control.

suggestions?

FYI - Titleist rep is coming next week. I have a spot to test their new irons as well.

Sorry , we were typing at the same time.....

You faster than I and coming from the plushness of PXG, is that a word? Anyways,  the softness in feel of the PXG, I'd highly recommend i230s straight through...... I too am a low launch , low spin but low hdcp player that CRAVES a 4 and 5i to get up in the air ..... more for confidence of shots needing carry and obviously to hold more greens ..... almost 58 now and broken down, the i230s std specs have turned back the clock for me!! These aren't distance club per se.....more precision tools ..... hitting repeatable flights and front to back yardages.

525 is better than the i500 in terms of feel/sound but again too clicky for me ..... the 430 has such strong lofts , even with tech built to launch, for my speed is unusable.

Somehow Ping built the i230 as a midsize chassis with decent looks , less offset in long irons yet as easy to hit as the i210s....

Go to a big box store if you can and hit all 3 in 5i's .....ask them to tape up heads and test for yourself but my unabashed recommendation is i230s for your game.

I am just a few years younger.  What PXG head were you using?   I was even considering keeping my scoring P’s and adding the XP’s in the mid irons (albeit I have never hit the XP’s).

Would love to hear if anyone mixes various models of pings?  Something like g430 in the long irons and 525’s or 230’s in the scoring irons.  Many of the other brands seem like they are designed with combo sets as a standard. not so sure ping is the same.

In general, the I-series are sorta combo-ish in their makeup. Maybe not as much now as in the past. I will happily take my blueprints out in the summer from 7-gap, but I don't find a lot of need.

The question is why you would want to do it. In general, it might be to either get easier-to-launch long irons, or narrower-sole short irons.

Absolutely you can combo them, but you have to be aware of what you're going to get IRL. For example, a 4-iron in the 430 is 19º, but a 5-iron in the i230 is 26º. So it's not just a simple thing.

I use the crossover 4, and that's at 22.5º, with a power-spec 5-iron 230 at 25º. They gap properly, particularly because the 4-iron is hollow and lighter. If I were to have chosen a 430 for the task, it would have been a pair of 5-irons.

You might want to consider a i525 4, 5, 6 iron, and then a i230 7 iron down but in power-spec for the i230 only. That should give you a pretty good match between those you've mentioned.

I think you are plenty good enough (and fast enough) to go i230 4 or 5-W. I would start with that and then if you’d like, replace a long iron with an icrossover.

I have two 7-irons, one from each.  The 2.5 degree loft difference between the two works out to about a 12 yard difference in carry for me.  I think that is due to the 525 being a little hotter, but also spinning a little less.

For a few minutes I played a I525 combo with I59 irons.  There was a cosmetic difference, but otherwise the set worked really well. The I59 irons are very forgiving in my opinion, and with the I525 weakened, the gapping was easy.  I did go back to my Srixon 545/745 combo only because I missed that forged golfwrx feeling

I played with the combo set of the Ping G's 5-7 and iE1's 8-U.  They were a nice setup!

Same set up currently.  ie1's are really nice irons.  Really a nice combination, but getting tired and looking for new irons at the moment with similar make up (Ping or Mizuno).
