Mizuno 245 vs the field questions

GHIN n Juice

Recommended Posts

For those of you who have tested the 245s, what are your findings compared to the zx5s and the T200s?  Distance, launch, spin?

While I'm aware that I’ll need to hit them myself, I’m just looking for some feedback from the masses since fitting bays are my moral enemy and there’s no way I’m getting outdoors for a few months.

Hit them during a fitting and loved them. Currently playing Callaway Mavrik's, which are falling apart (questioning Callaways' QC...). That being said, I am indifferent about brand, so I hit the P790's, T150s, T200s. Didn't hit Srixon. But I will say the Mizuno 245's easily had the best feel and sound. They don't give as much extra distance as I anticipated for a "players distance" irons. Still was hitting it about the same distance as my Mavrik's with a better flight pattern, spin and the 245's has 3 degrees more loft. The Titleist clubs just didn't feel great. Were more spinny for me and the distance was much worse. That being said, they have 31/32 degrees loft (vs the 30 of the 245's). Overall, I felt like the 245's offered the best feel and flight. Distance was a push, and I wasn't really looking to gain that much (if any). The appearance of them also was very appealing, which was just icing on the cake.

I have the zx5mk ii and ordered the 245. Going to test them both to see what I like but personally I don’t think you could go wrong with either the Srixon or Mizuno 2 of the best iron makers in my opinion.

Thanks for your reply.  Please post your results when you get the 245s!

Not much in it performance wise.

Size quite different. T200's the smallest. 245's are progressive size wise in a good way. ZX5's are large throughout the set.

Feel is a big difference. 245's feel nice. T200's okay. ZX5's super clicky.

I just hit t200 and 245 today at a fitting. T200 very explosive off the face and easy to hit, better feel than my p790s. 245s had much better feel but not as explosive. For a hollow foam filled whatever distance iron for me it was kind of a toss up between these two. However I ended up going with the 243 which to me is every bit as forgiving as the 245 but feels even better. I would not sleep on the 243 if you are gonna try the 245. I’m mid to high 80s swing speed 7 iron btw.

So yardages were about the same for all 3 head to head?  Which iron had a higher flight...  I'm looking at the same sets to upgrade in the spring.  Thanks.

243 was the highest (more loft than the other two) distance wise there wasn't much in it, and like I said mishits on the 243 were nowhere NEAR as punishing as I thought they were going to be. And trust me I hit some stinkers with it lol. I would say the T200 was the easiest to get out of the middle, and strangely (since most people say the p790 is better) seemed to have better flight and distance than my p790 (2021) gamers which I did not expect. However the flight window and feel was not as good as the 243, and I wanted to get something I had room to grow into over the next couple of years. If I was going to pick a club to game today with where my game is at right now I would probably do a blended T150 - T200 set with the t150s starting at the 8 or 9 iron. The Mizunos just felt soooo much better and I can totally game them with little to no trade off for the feedback and flight. If you don't really really need the extra distance I think the 243 is the better choice, that said the 245 is by far the best feeling of the foam filled distance guys i have hit with maybe a close second being the Cobra Forge Tec.

I got caught up in the distance over feel thing last time i bought clubs and that's why I went with the P790, and now I kinda regret it. That's not to say that the P790s did not deliver, they are very long and will let you get away with murder...you just aren't really getting any kind of understanding really of where you are hitting the ball on the face of the club unless its a huge miss IMHO. They do feel pretty good when you get it out of the middle but what club doesn't 😉

Do you remember your distances between the 790s and the 245s?

sorry man I wasn't really looking at distance that much but more flight characteristics and spin. Also pretty much right off the bat I told the fitter that the 245 was great but it was just a better version of my p790. At that point we switched gears to the T150 and 243. We got into the T200 when I started asking about a combo set, and of course i started to just flush the s*** out of that club...but again that was just a slightly better version of the p970. I am going back today to maybe put my order in and i can hit them again real quick and report back.

No worries, I was just interested to see if they were close enough that it was a wash.

ZX5 is very clicky.. worst feel of any players distance iron I’ve hit. Like really bad. I’d have to use an extremely low compression ball to tolerate them.

225/245 feel as good as any thing in this category.

It appears that Miz made a meaningful improvement in performance between the 24x and 22x, while keeping or improving feel.  A real win-win.  Mizuno’s club designer has stated that the 243 was reduced significantly in size, but I have read that it is less than a mm.  The video and pics I have seen lead me to think that the actual size is very playable.

Anxious to test in person.  We have a new GG near me, so hoping they are in the fitting cart, along with Ping BPS.

245 and P790 performed about the same for me. A little more spin with the 245 and felt/sounded a heck of a lot better. I have T150’s in my bag now. They’re getting replaced with 243s

Ball speed was up about 4-5mph and carry was up about 8-9 yards for me. Also feels nicer to me and seems a bit more forgiving on the off center strikes

The 243s look a little bigger than the T150s to me. A tiny bit more offset as well

Keep in mind, the 245 is NOT foam filled. It is simply hollow main frame with tungsten weighting inside the cavity. I just ordered the 245's and am coming from the OG ZX5's. The ZX5's and I just didn't get along and it was primarily due to the feel/sound and ball flight I got. They just seem more harsh and very clicky. Spin was fine with the ZX5, but they launched a little low. The 245s gave me good spin numbers and I was able to get the peak height I was looking for. Both the ZX5 and 245s give me better spin numbers than the P790s.

I found this as well, also the 243 set is sort of a built in combo set which is nice. Whereas I would like with the T150s you more than likely would want to combo into the T200 around the 7 iron.

Loving my 245's (coming from 225's for a season - which I also loved). I only have 2 rounds and some range time with them, but they feel and sound amazing. My miss (toe shots) are not punishing at all. Might lose 5% distance on them. Can't wait to get some more rounds in.

I have not played the T200 or ZX5's. Although I think Mizuno, Srixon, and Titleist are on top of their game right now from everything I read.

I just hit a ton of shots today with the 245 demo 7 iron on a range, not indoors.  Compared directly to my JPX 921 forged 7 iron.  Looked much cleaner and compact and felt better.  Didn't pay attention to the LM numbers so can't compare that but I loved the look and the feel was great considering it's not fully forged.  Almost pulled out credit card on the spot, but need to hit one more time to make sure it wasn't a honeymoon range session.
