Father/Son Golf Trip

Recommended Posts

Hello WRX friends. My son has just surprised me with a father/son golf trip to Vegas for my birthday. I will turn 62 in March. I don't get to spend much time with him as he lives some distance away so this is really special and I am very excited. To be able to spend a few days with him alone may be the greatest gift I have ever received.

He has let me do the planning. I have only been to Vegas twice and I didn't golf. I am a 10 handicap and he took up the game last year and fell in love with the sport. He is 27 and is scoring in the 90's to give you a sense of our skill level. We have 4 days and 3 nights there. We will bring our clubs and I have booked flights. I thought I'd turn to this community for some advice on where to play and stay. As this will be a special trip, I would like your advice on the three courses we must play there. Budget wise, we aren't rich. I will probably help him pay for some of the trip as he doesn't make a lot of money. We can't afford to pay $400 for a round of golf. I would say if we could find courses in the $150-200 range we would be happy. If there is a must play above that budget, feel free to mention it and we will see what we can do.

I'd also like any advice you have on where to stay. It will be his first trip there so I'd like to stay on the strip somewhere in the middle if possible. We aren't gamblers so not interested much in the casinos but will primarily walk around the strip after golf so he can take in the whole experience. Again, budget wise we are hoping to stay in the $300 or lower per night range if possible.

Any help or advice is appreciated to help make this once in a lifetime trip special for him and I. Thanks to everyone in advance for any tips.

Take care.

Dale

Definitely would recommend Paiute, some great courses out there.

I think it might be at the very top end of your price range but I would recommend driving the hour and a half or so up to Mesquite to play Wolf Creek. It is a "must play once" kind of course. It's a pretty unforgettable experience only in it's uniqueness as a golf course.. there's really nothing like it (even if I think the course itself is a bit gimmicky)

@aenemated might have some nice local knowledge to add

If you stay on the strip there are so many choices. I like the Aria, Bellagio, Caesars and MGM. For a first trip you'll probably want to experience the strip. Otherwise, Reflection Bay is a nice place to stay and play golf off the strip.

For the golf, I would second the recommendation of the Paiute courses. All three courses there are good. As also mentioned above, a round at Wolf Creek is worth the drive. It's not a course you'll want to play over and over again, but it is unique, scenic and memorable. The golf course at Reflection Bay is worth playing even if you don't stay there, although the green fee may be more than you would like.

Have fun.

Two of my favorite things.  Golf and Vegas.

here is my advice.

stay at bellagio or aria.  My rec is bellagio. Great location. Variety of food (sadelles breakfast is fantastic). And great upscale places for dinner.  Plus within walking distance (easily) to cheaper options at say horeshoe area etc.  Incan give you numerous other reccomendations for things to do in vegas if you want them.

as for courses.

check out reflection bay - the views are pretty cool

tpc las vegas

lvpaiute - a cew courses to choose from

bali hai - someone who has played recently can give you a better idea than i can.  Its close.

or if you want make a bit of a drive — wolf creek.  Wonky course but incredible views!

if you really want to splurge check out shadow creek or cascata. But mind you the sticker shock on greens fees.

Not gamblers? Is there otherwise some particular reason to do Vegas (location/proximity?)?

I’m not a gambler and frankly find Vegas to be a nightmare. Overcrowded, smokers everywhere, mediocre (and crowded) food. And the golf is not particularly convenient or outstanding.

Lot of other places to go where you can get more bang for your buck if you’re looking for a golf trip.

Thanks for the response. Although I've only been twice, there is a lot to see and do in Vegas that does not involve gambling. My son has never been and I'd like him to experience it once. We also want to see a hockey game, golf, and do some shopping as well as perhaps a concert (Foreigner) or Cirque du Soleil show. It's also fun just to walk the strip and see everything plus have a few beverages. He also wants to go because he's heard so much about it.

If you're going for a hockey game, New York New York and Aria are both an easy walk from the rink. All the Cirque shows are fun and different. We just saw "Ka" at MGM in December, and it had stunning visuals. Can't go wrong with O, Mystere, or LOVE (if you're a Beatles fan) either.

For golf, I'm a big Paiute fan. Pretty reasonably priced, and three fun golf courses. You might be able to get a deal if you play 36 in a day; they used to have those but it's been a while. Just be aware that Paiute can be both cool and windy, so dress in layers!

Last unsolicited opinion .... at any of these courses, play whatever tees will make it fun for you. They all have LOTS of tee boxes and combos, and playing from comfortable tees vs. "stretch" tees will make all the difference.

Have a great trip! I've done a number of trips with my dad (he's now 86, and still shooting his age once a month!) and they've all been special.

Thanks so much for your response. I really appreciate it. I've already decided we will probably play the forward tees so we can just have fun! I am hoping, like you, that this will turn into a regular event with my son. Can't wait!

I have nothing to add golf wise but I can tell you as the son of a father son golf trip it is the best week of the year! My dad and I have done one for 25 years not. Been all over. Pebble for his retirement, Scotland this summer for my early 40th, whistling straights, bandon, chambers bay. We’ve played so many course but the time at night playing cards or backgammon is some of the best memories!

enjoy the time with your son!

When I stay in Vegas I typically stay away from the strip an Uber there for restaurants or entertainment. When we do stay on the Strip we stay at the Trump Tower. No casino and no smoking and it’s a quality hotel that has a free shuttle to all destinations downtown.

The golf recommendations given are good but may be too pricey for you. Angel Park in the Summerlin area is nice and affordable but not in the same league as those mentioned.

Also, if you feel the urge to splurge for dinner one day I highly recommend the Baccanal Buffet at Caesars. It’s pricey but worth it. You’ll need to make reservations well in advance and even with reservations plan on standing in line for a while.
