This happened today

We finished the round at our Saturday stroke play and I spent some time with the player I marked checking his card. After we were done with his card I asked my buddy who was my marker to hand me my scorecard to check and sign.

He told me he had already dropped it in the box by mistake. I was left without the card to check and sign, I told the pro so and I DQ’d myself.

My question is when you as a player are left with no choice like in this case are you always DQ or is there any other option since the player was left without the possibility of checking and signing the scorecard?

I believe you can recreate the card with your marker. Then flog your marker in the parking lot.

You may have been hasty in your decision to DQ yourself. See Rule 3.3b(2) and the Exception (below). You should contact the Committee and have them retrieve your scorecard. Further and technically, I'm not sure that a player can "DQ" himself, that's up to the Committee. You could NR though.

Exception – No Penalty When Breach Due to Marker Failing to Carry Out Responsibilities: There is no penalty if the Committee finds that the player’s breach of Rule 3.3b(2) was caused by the marker’s failure to carry out their responsibilities (such as the marker leaving with the player’s scorecard or without certifying the scorecard), so long as this was beyond the player’s control.

I've played in so many regional and interclub match play events it's difficult to recount. My point you should have gone to the tournament or handicap chair first, to explain what happened. He'd likely have pulled your card, and you could review it with him.

This is a classic "misplacing" of the scorecard by the marker. If no Committee/pro can access the misplaced card, the player should complete another scorecard, have it certified by themself and marker, and submit correctly. Clarification 3.3b/3 is useful guidance here. I would also be making a short explanation on the correct card why there are two cards in the box if the first one cannot be retrieved.

Finally last night the Committee did not DQ me, they summoned the marker and the player, explained that the marker had failed to carry out his responsibilities, that the player had been all the time out of control of the situation and the scorecard was valid. The ruling was founded on rule 3.3.b(2) and I was “reminded” that a competitor cannot DQ themselves. Pretty much exactly what @rogolf stated in his post.

What I was trying to say is that normally there are two separate score cards that contain the score of a single player. If one is missing the other may be used.

One (of many) good thing(s) about electronic score cards is that one cannot lose them 😁
