Patrick Cantlay - WITB - 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational

Recommended Posts

I think it would have been hilarious if after the Ryder Cup we started having "Patrick Cantlay - What's on his head?" but too late now...

Bit like this joke actually, but I only just thought of it haha!

Looks like a fresh TS3. Wonder if old faithful cracked or got over the limit from use. Was impressed to see lots of 180-181 bs from him at Riv

The set of 718 AP2 irons also looks quite fresh. Wonder how many sets he has left in the stash.

Looks like he gained some ball speed since last year.  He was in the low to mid 170's on average.  Now he's high 170's to low 180's.  Faster ball speed = faster pace of play???  Only time will tell.........

That can't be; I've been told that Callaway is the only OEM that offers a million different secret menu options for Pro players and others like Titleist only have the retail options on offer and therefore those retail options are vastly superior. Has to be true, the forums have told me so...

Is this the week Patty Ice switches something in this bag? Probably not, but stay tuned.

Would love to see some pics of the iron faces, though. He's been gaming those AP2s forever, there's probably some sweet wear marks on them 👀

probably replaces the irons with a new set every spring. I can't imagine a pro playing the same irons for more than a year unless they rarely play or practice with their gamers outside of competition...which to me seems odd/unlikely.  I seem to remember berger saying he went through 14 sets of his old TM's in under 10 years.

With old irons guys would get them re-grooved and re-finished then add more and more lead tape to make up the weight.  I'm not that is even possible with todays rules and these types of modern irons.

Woah good catch, that kinda fits with what I was going to speculate re: LeftDash's post above.

The TS3 is a outlier in the Titleist lineup for several reasons that are relevant. Primarily its the aesthetics; Titleist woods have long had a lot of visual bulge and roll to the face due to shaping and paint lines, but the TS line looks *very* straight faced by comparison. Visually this could easily be a strong preference and the TSR2 cosmetics we see here could have easily been born from a "make this thing look like my TS3 at address".

The other bit is CG bias where Titleist TS and prior was pretty consistently more heel side draw biased and the TSi3 start playing ball with the general trend of making the lower spinning heads more fade biased and the more forgiving heads more neutral, hence Patrick starting with the more neutral head (likely with hotmelt in heel) and why his previous forays into the TSR3 seeing the rear weight in one of the heel positions.

As a fader maybe he likes the draw bias kinda like dj.

DJ tends to prefer his heads quite neutral actually as he himself (to the extent to which he can be trusted lol) has said that he doesn't have a defined heel or toe miss. That video building his SIM where Trottie talks about "DJ likes to feel a draw" is weird because literally all he does in that video is reduce the SIM's inherent strong fade bias by removing some weight from the rear and adding hotmelt back in the heel. It's still fade biased at that point based on my calculations, just less.

In all likelihood it's related to strike tendencies for Cantlay, he probably misses in the heel when he does miss and simply doesn't want that miss to over cut/slice. Same deal with Jon Rahm and his draw bias preference.

And further more on the dj sim video as I’m a sim lover, the slider weight was in the toe for a bit on his sim (but not during masters/tour champ wins)

https://www.golfwrx.com/630586/dustin-johnson-witb-2020-bmw-championship/

I use heavy SIM back weights as my miss is a toe hook and it does seem to help fade bias + slider

Makes sense on Cantlay strike location. CG predictability matters!
