If you have one, what is your most random golf club in the bag that just seems out of place but works for you?

Recommended Posts

So, I was playing a round the other day, and the people I got paired up with could not stop talking about this one club that I carry in my bag.  I know its a gimmick club for most, but it is so useful and a ton of fun to play with.  I never had anybody really take notice until the other day even though its been in my bag for a while.  Granted, I will say that that day was an exceptionally good day around the greens for me.

The club in question is a 68 Degree Pinemeadow wedge that I cut down to 34 inches in length and put a 22 gram Winn Dri-Tac Lite grip on to keep the swing weight up with the loss in length.  The club has almost no bounce to speak of, but I am able to play with it just fine. I got it on sale on Amazon for around $25 a while back just to toy with, and it found its way into my bag to my surprise.  It did not take the place of anything due to the fact that I only carried 13 clubs in my bag at the time.

Basically, when I'm around the green these days, I walk up with 2 clubs in my hand.  If I can use my putter, I do because that is generally the safest play for any amateur, but if I need to pop the ball up in the air or do a little chip and run, the 68 degree has been golden.  I can set up straight forward and take as much loft as I need to off via shaft lean to get the optimal chip and run, but if I need to bounce it up in the air and get it to stop on a dime, I have no trouble at all.  The club has been wonderful for when I find myself short sided. I had never had the flop shot as a choice until this club came along.  I only use the flop when absolutely needed though.  The low bounce just makes it so easy to slide under and get the ball to shoot straight up in the air.

Cleveland smart sole chipper.  Nice “flighted wedge” shots from 60 yards and in.

I find that chippers are a very under utilized club for amateurs.  So many people give people a hard time about them, but I have seen them do wonders for people's game.  I have an acquaintance that plays off scratch that uses one better than I have ever seen anyone use any club in my life.  If he has it in his hands around the green, we assume the ball is going in the hole half the time, and if it doesn't, he generally has a little tap in to finish out.

I have a Callaway Mavrik Max 36* 8H that I use for chipping.

But, given my slow swing speed and high lofted driver, the club that is out of place is the 22* Mavrik Max 4 iron with a 40g LL flex shaft.

My woods are senior flex, irons are ladies flex, and wedges are ladies flex.  LL flex is even softer than ladies flex!

I use it off the tee and fairway.

Cleveland Smart Sole 4 C wedge.  It is the best club in my bag.  Have been playing this club (had previous generations as well) for last 4 seasons and it just finds a way to stay in it.  I can hit full shots with tight dispersion from 105, I can hit knock down shots from 60 and in, chips around the green, bump and runs, punch out from the trees, and even out of plugged bunker shots.  This club is a work horse for me and will always have a spot in my bag.  This and a 56* full faced wedge is all I use for wedges in my bag.

Probably my 20 year old Taylormade rescue dual that regularly gets back into the bag. It’s so old some of the younger members of our club don’t even recognise it now and think it’s retro…..

Most of my clubs are pretty new and modern, and I have been fit for. But I still have about a 15-20 year old Adams hybrid in the bag. I have tried other more modern hybrids, and nothing can beat it. It is old, beat up, but I can't seem to get rid of it. I can draw it, fade it, and I know it will go between 200 and 220 yards depending on what I am trying to do. Very valuable club for me over the years.

Might not be that weird or random, but its my Titleist U505 - 3 iron. I dont have a 4 iron, so it just goes from my 5i to the 3i

1st Use: I play on a lot of courses with trees. So the first purpose is a rescue club. I play it back in the stance, choke down, and can still hit a 150yard laser beam 5 feet off the ground to get out from under trees.

2nd Use: I can hit it just like a normal iron and it goes 210-220 for me and its very low ball flight, so its a great club to play in the wind when my hybrid gets too high.

Cleveland Halo hybrid (2006) w/ PX (original) graphite, 3i 22 deg. Everyone forgets about this club, but it's one of the best hybrids made.

I’ve recently put two weirdos back in the bag.

A maroon dot ping gorge tour 60* wedge, it’s like a 69* lie angle?

Also been put a One Length F9 4 iron back in the bag. I still want to bend it a bit flatter. But it’s actually been really great after a recent swing change.

Driver 8* Mavrik Max Evenflow Riptide 50 Stiff

4 Iron 19.5* F9 One Length KBS Tour 80 Stiff
