Zurich Classic of New Orleans 2024

finally watched the ending.  My gosh, if you only watched his last two shots, I would have believed you if you said Martin Trainer was a 12 handicap paired up with Ramey in some sort of celebrity challenge.   Those were both incredibly ugly.

what?  No they had EVERYTHING to lose.  Your comment doesn't make much sense to me.   a two year exemption for both of them (plus whatever major(s) this win gets them in) is life changing.  meanwhile, for Rory and Lowry, this win is next to meaningless to them.  They're basically out there messing around and having fun.

I don't think either of them ever dreamed they'd have $970,100 in their pockets standing on the first playoff hole.

 

They were odds-on favorites to lose 95 out of 100 times.

 

My attitude would have been, 'This is awesome and I hope I win, but either way I'm going down swinging because I may never get this chance again.'

 

Instead, one guy pulls the tee shot, the other guy hooks it off the planet, the original guy lays the sod over it...

 

I think we just have a different way of looking at it : )

this event only gets you into the pga championship, and it doesnt give you any owgr points to get in the others. it counts towards exemption status, the sentury tournament next year, the fedex playoffs via the 400 points, and the players next year.

I watched about 10 minutes of the Zurich classic and even that was too much.   Sorry, but this is one of the worst tournaments of the year IMHO

Why?  

 

The course is meh and the field leaves a lot to be desired but I like that it's not just another 72 hole individual stroke play event. The one match play event is already dead, why rag on the only other alternative format the tour has?  

 

Personally, I think it's just a bad date on the calendar, especially if the RBC stays as a signature event. Find a spot on the calendar that improves the chances of getting a strong field. Scheffler/Burns or Thomas/Spieth vs Rory/Lowry down the stretch in alt shot would be great.

I think the PNC Father/Son tournament is more exciting than this. Maybe they should get OWGR points too

That's funny.

 

My old club played a 2 best ball team event every Sunday. The only exception was July 4th Monday when we'd play a combo event. 9-hole alt-shot and a 9-hole 4-ball, sometimes a 9-hole 2-man scramble replacing one of the first 2.

 

Tried coaxing the membership to do something different any number of times during the year but all they wanted to do was a 2 BB team format. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

variety is the spice of life unless your old in which case it just equals heartburn and indigestion.

The date right after The Masters & RBC certainly hurts it a bit as it's hard to get most to want to go at it three weeks in a row. Imagine how most Tour players would do as truckers or traveling nurses or in sales or anything else where two weeks away from home then a week or more break was a luxury you'd never know, hah. Guess it gets hard to keep the pedal down when you have all the money you'll ever need. 

 

Having more big names would be great, just don't know how they'll do it organically. A few more known young guns would be nice as well, but at least some of them came through.

I think the date just kills it. That was Rory's 4th week in a row. I was actually shocked that he didn't pull out after a disappointing Masters. Pretty easy to simply say, "Game is a little off, I need to take some time and clean things up in advance of the PGA". That had to cross his mind. I can only assume that a drunken promise to Lowry was the only thing that forced his hand.  

 

That said, I think it's slowly growing. Before the team play component, the best guy in the field was probably Billy Horschel. Now you have Cantlay and Xander, Morikawa, Fitzpatrick, Theegala and Zalatoris. Get Homa to partner w/ Morikawa as Cal guys, JT + Spieth, Scottie + Burns, Scandinavian super team of Ludvig and Viktor? Now we're cooking w/ gas 😉 

 

I think a lot of top guys would be down for a low pressure and fun week with one of the friends. It just has to fit into the schedule. Honestly, it would probably make more sense as an early season event like the Sony or Amex. Hell, now that the Sentry is no longer a true tournament of champions, kick off the season w/ a team event. Players already treat that week as a vacation anyway.
