amazing photos of the pasatiempo front nine restoration

Recommended Posts

To the OP...great pictures.  Looks great there, and looked good on TV last week for the Western Intercollegiate.  One of my favorite courses and I look forward to playing there when the back nine restoration is completed later this year.

The place is amazing. A dear friend is a member. Can't wait to play it once the back is fully re-done.

Great pics

AM bunkering is incredible

Stanley Thompson looks similar IMHO

looove the look of Pasatiempo and tells you how good ANGC could look with a bunker re-do

ANGC needs a complete restoration, a few great greens destroyed over time.

Maybe someone will sponsor me.  🙂  $450?  No thanks.

Thinking it might be fun to do the front 9 twice as it is now.  $245.

I will admit that I am slacking with my study of Pasatiempo.  This is the first time I have really taken the time to study the holes.

First thing that jumped out to me, the corridor for holes one  and two is narrower than I had anticipated.

Second striking thing is that #3 appears to me to be a mini version of Riviera #10.  Was #3 always meant to be a par three?  That cross bunker appears to just be window dressing.  Am I wrong in that thought?

Neither 1 nor 2 could be called "narrow" I think... and 1 is a LOT more playable these days then in the fairly recent past, when the trees on the right were so thick you couldn't see 9 fairway.

3 is VERY uphill.  It's also at least 60 yards shorter than 10 at Riviera.  It was always a par three.  Of course it's so uphill it is a very tough green to hit and the older I get the more it feels like a par 4!  But no it's not a par 4 and never was.

The 1st hole as designed by MacKenzie was incredibly wide.  The fairway went from where the range is now to a shared fairway with #9.  There was no cart path or trees on the right.  That's what I want them to restore along with 6 and 7.  Attached is a retro photo from #1 tee.  Linked below are more classic photos of Pasa and even Cypress on the same website.  Pasa was incredibly rugged when it opened.  I'd love to see that returned.

I played it in 2021, and loved it. Even at $450 I'd do it again without hesitation.

Would you pay $450 repeatedly, as a local?

See, I live 1/2 hour away.   For many years the price was relatively reasonable, meaning I had no problem playing it several times each year.

Now?  Even once seems too much.

To each his own.

I would for sure do it once just to play the renovated course, but would probably make it an every several years visit after that. I played it for the first time last February and absolutely fell in love with the course.

That makes sense.  I'm sure I'll play it again a few times before I leave  this mortal coil.  It just does remain a bummer they've priced it out of existence for regular play.  For me anyway.  But what the hell it's been a good run.

Seems that's where everyone is going these days. I have a cabin near Forest Dunes in Michigan and on the weekends its always packed but weekdays are for the most part dead and they've really priced out the locals the last several years. Never understood not having a residents rate or some type of dynamic pricing when it isn't busy.

As a local? Absolutely not. But as someone who would be traveling from NY to do it, absolutely.

I think a good analogy is we have Oak Hill CC here. I live about 10 minutes away from it. It's private, and I'm a member at a different private club that doesn't reciprocate with it. In 28 years of playing golf I've only been able to get on their East (Championship) course twice. If someone came along and offered me the chance to play, but it would cost me $450, I'd do it. But obviously my budget cannot sustain that cost for long.

Exactly.  Thus my dismay at the new high cost at Pasatiempo.

I absolutely understand infrequent visitors paying whatever it takes.

One of the AM trademarks was a “useless” bunker. He did this in many designs as a homage to his time working to camouflage defense bunkers for the British military. In fact, on his original designs if you were on the green looking back towards the tee most of his bunkering was hidden.

I played Pasatiempo back in 2015 for I think somewhere around $260. I was a novice golf course architecture nerd back then, and I remember trying to make a decision between playing Pasatiempo or Harding Park. Pasatiempo felt a little steep going in, but when I considered there aren't many public MacKenzie's out there, I felt I had to pay the price to see it. Walking off 18 I felt it was well worth it, and I don't regret my decision to this day considering Pasa is firmly in my personal top 10. It's a better course than Pebble.

If I had that same novice level knowledge of golf course architecture today, hadn't played either course, and I was trying to decide between Harding and Pasa, I'd probably go with Harding considering its a full $200 cheaper. However, golf architecture is basically a full blown hobby for me at this point, and if I had never played Pasa before I'd pay the $450 just to see it. That said and because I have played it before, at $450 I won't be playing the golf course again. It's unfortunate that they've priced out the locals, but as the demand goes up I'm sure the course and the membership are looking to reap the rewards in more income and/or less play at that price point.
