Help with Srixon ZX MKII combo set

Recommended Posts

I've mostly only played Titleist irons over the years except for JPX 919 tours which were too spinny/dug too much for me to play. Have been playing 2019 T100 (all bent 1 deg strong to help reduce spin/launch) since release and they have been great but getting worn down and needing a new set but wanting to go a different direction. Just finding the Titleist irons to launch and spin a bit too high and I'm not playing tour level firm greens that need that. Just wanting something a bit lower spin which got me looking into the ZK7s after hitting them on sim and liking the numbers and feel. Also considered the Blueprint S secondary but will try Srixon first. I'm a good ball striker with irons, 6 iron carry with T100 around 195 ave with no rollout since I spin a lot. Just needing some recommendations with the long irons and what others have done for their combos. My thoughts so far are:

-Srixon ZX MK II utility 3 iron bent weak to 21 deg or ZX MK II 4 iron at 22 deg (utility would be nice for longer par 5s and off the tee, next club is an 18.25 deg TSR3 hybrid)

-Srixon ZX 5 MK II 5 iron bent 1 deg weak to 25 deg

-Srixon ZX 7 MK II 6-PW (possibly bend PW and 9 iron 1 deg strong?, my gap wedge is a 50 bent to 49 and I like my wedge yardages where they are)

Anyone else have similar combo or what other combo did you do with ZX5/7?

It sounds like you have good gapping with your T100. If that's the case I'd skip the ZX5 and do ZX7 5-P. Then you could do the ZXU 3 iron a degree weak. I go ZX7 5-P and then the ZXU 4 but also have the 5-8 bent a degree weak.

Rather than guessing, take the guesswork out and do yourself a huge favor... go take a fitting.  It will save you time and money in the long run and could last you for several seasons.  Find a good local fitter who listens and can back up what he recommends with hard data. Worth every penny.  Good luck!

Fittings include 6 irons only around me so that's not an option. Can't test the long irons or utility irons. I did the fitting already for irons this year and that's what got me looking at the ZX7. Fitter just recommended 4-PW based on my ball striking but I want the extra forgiveness/more driving like irons like I'm used to with T200/100.

I am using the ZX7 PW till i5 and i4 and i3 as ZXU version in the bag as well. The ZXU are in rotation with a hybrid and a 7 wood depending on strike quality and course layout

sometimes I wish to have the i6 and i5 a bit more forgiving so I can fully understand the question about mixing a set.

I have the ZX5 5 iron at 24 degrees and the ZX utility 4 at 23 degrees. My ZX plays like a 4 iron in terms of gapping.  The longer shaft and hollow head make it go further than a 23 degree ZX5 iron would.

So you don’t really need a traditional loft gap between your irons and utility, unless you want the utility to play longer than an equivalent iron would

So I have 2 sets of Srixon ZX7s.  The set that is currently in the bag is the OG model with DG AMT s300 and I have an MKII set with KBS $ Taper shafts.  Both are 5-P, and I tried the last 2 iterations of the Utility irons, and while I liked them, I just wasn't very consistent with them.  I'm a pretty good ball striker in terms of being able to control my distances and keeping my ball in an area where I give myself a chance to get up and down.

I've consistently had an Adams Super 9031 23* hybrid in the bag for the better part of a decade, and on a whim, I was going to order the ZX5 MK II 4 irons to try out.  I got lucky that a friend of mine didn't want his because he liked the Utility better, so he let me have it for free dollars.  I threw a Recoil 110 Utility prototype I got off of ebay for a good deal, and I hit it so much better than the Utility iron.  It probably has to do with my swing being somewhat steep at times, and the V sole on the ZX5 4 iron works better for my swing than the Utility irons.  Launch, spin and height are exactly what I'm looking for in that spot in the bag.

I can't help much with the 3 iron spot for you.  I currently have the new Apex Utility in 21* for that slot.  I don't create enough launch with a 3 iron to even consider having one in the bag.

I tried a ZX5 5 iron in the mix of my ZX7 set. The ZX5 showed zero difference in height, spin or distance compared to the ZX7 5-iron. Wasn't any easier to hit either.

I'd suggest 5-pw in ZX7 (or 4-pw) and add a ZX 4-utility iron or ZX 3-utility iron (of both depending on overall set-up).

Anyone else have similar combo or what other combo did you do with ZX5/7?

I've had great success with the Zx7s going 4-gw, but recently noticed (I'm starting to get to that mid-life age...) I can use a little more forgiveness with the 4 iron. Grabbed a P790 4 iron here on the BST, changed out the shaft and have seen very good results. Maybe 5-10 more yards, has "similar" offset and look at address as the Zx7 set 4 iron, but better forgiveness. I hit it off the tee on some par 4s, sometimes on a long par 3, once in a while a 2nd shot on a par 5. Able to flight it and work the ball both ways.

I like the idea of a ZX MkII 4U with common shaft to your set; 3U built as a utility, lighter shaft weight (graphite or not; graphite typically built at longer length); and 5-p in the ZX7. I’d only tweak lofts after a long gapping session (or two). If you’re interested in zx5 for forgiveness, I feel the ZX MkII is a better option as it has consistent spin and exceptional forgiveness at a relatively compact blade length. Scottie plays two srixon utilities, not a bad setup to mimic 💪🏼

I've seen a lot of discussion on this, and many people suggest using a ZX4 Mkii 4 iron 1 degree weak with a ZX7 5-P. It takes the offset off a bit, still gives you the V-Sole that the ZXU doesn't have, and covers the same gaps as the rest of the set. While I haven't tried the ZX4's, I did try the OG ZX5's and was not a fan due to the sole size in the short irons.

Thank you.  I will probably then order my new set once this season is over.  That way I can practice all winter and into next spring with them before debuting them in 2025.

I play my combo set of ZX5/7 MKIIs as follows:

ZX5 3 iron 2° weak at 22°

ZX5 5 iron 2° weak at 26°

ZX7 6 iron 2° weak at 30°

ZX7 7 iron 2° weak at 34°

ZX7 8 iron 2° weak at 38°

ZX7 9 iron 1° weak at 42°

ZX7 PW stock at 46°

Leaves me with pretty tidy 12-14 yard gaps between all clubs and bending weak helps my eye with taking offset out.
