Well I finally got to hit the Jupiter Slugger today. I was anxious but had to discipline myself to properly warm up not to hurt myself. I had not hit balls since Thursday. But went through my routine and got loose. Man that thing hits great without any effort. I hit a mix of older Lady Precepts and Srixon Soft Feels with it. Hit it about mid traj with a baby cut about 180 or so carry but man it ran out even on a 1/2 wet range. Of course the whack of solid persimmon drew attention of the tourist golfers. The usual questions as in "why do you hit that thing?" Usual answer "because I still can" . I can hit it straight and get serviceable distance with absolutely no effort. I am looking forward to the Tourons going home and being able to play some vintage rounds again. I am playing in the St Pattys tournament Wednesday. I was asked by one of the owners to be a fill in because evidently some people went home early. Since I only carry 12 clubs as SOP I may put it into the bag to use on a couple of holes with severe dog legs. I have gotten to where I can hit it through the dog legs on both those holes with my Toyota on a stick Honma Driver. Since I have watched my food intake and hitting balls most days I have actually gained a little distance bit by bit.

Glad to hear you got it off the ground, I couldn't.  LoL 😆🤣

I want to get into persimmon clubs a little bit and I think a driver is the best place to start.  Does anyone have a recommendation for a relatively affordable club that has some street cred?  I see a lot of options on Ebay but I have very little knowledge when it comes to this sector if golf

Cleveland Classics drivers are decent and can be had for a decent price.  If you’re looking to game one start there.

I completely agree with this. I bought an RC 69 driver a few years ago just to try it out and I hit it as well as any club I've ever had. I have a bunch more now and love them all. You would be happy with any of them.

I'd also recommend the Palmer Peerless models, which are usually available at a decent price. I like all Palmers I have, but I've been enjoying my P61 lately because the 12* loft helps get modern balls up a bit.

A third cheap but good option is to find a 70s or 80s PowerBilt Citation. I didn't think I needed a Citation driver past my 1960 and 1966 drivers, but recently picked up a Citation 323 as a throw in with some 693s. My first thought was to flip it since I certainly didn't need another driver and I didn't pay for it, but it is a really nice club, so I re-gripped it and will put it into play this spring.

Further to this post, I have found myself as the fortunate custodian of three more Paul Gibson's!20220429_140626.jpg.33611906db0f7e0035b1274d76806ff9.jpg20220429_140831.jpg.6a11ecd6b57ccd2a8085c70351b24f36.jpg20220429_141020.jpg.01c2ac23235ef638dd2b3d2a5618399c.jpg20220429_141207.jpg.30c7ab4f82e197286324664ea0936994.jpg

These are a set of 11/2, 3 & 5 obviously originally made for RW Gilmour and appear unplayed.

This puts me the age old dilemma of play or not to play? I don't collect wall hangers and buy to play but they are only unhit once and I have other Gibson's I do play....

Unless Happy's initials were 'RW' I have no idea who the original customer / owner was? Given the 11/2 wood I am guessing a wealthy club golfer rather than Pro from Paul's impressive client list. 😁

The original headcovers are a nice touch.

Set them free. Resistance is futile, a club must be played.

What a fantastic find, they look stunning!

And the head covers are the icing on the cake. 😃

I had just 2 things left on my wishlist: 1952 LFF M09 all original and 1954 driver & 3 945W. Now my wishlist is down to 1. I already have a 945 driver 3 wood with C shafts that are nice gamers and 2 other drivers but these 2 have the original grips with silver band shafts in great condition. Nim is one restoring them for me.

Nice deep stampings and an unusual grain pattern.

Pretty happy with my brand new condition Powerbilt. Pretty as a picture. I would love ANY feed back or information someone may have. Also, can I use this?

That's good to hear, thanks. I was surprised there were 60 degree wedges back in the 80s. It is in the best condition of all the clubs which, again is unusual for a wedge.

It’s a 1987 Citation Plus. It’s just a little bigger than the Citation of that year and has the black insert instead of the red on the standard Citation. I have them both in unhit condition and will likely be keeping the Plus and selling the standard.

You absolutely can, and should, use that club. It’s a great driver.
