I use headcovers for the following reasons...
Keeps the clubs looking new...
No clacking around when walking or riding...
Increased resale value...

I use and recommend the Club Glove neoprene covers. But I definitely hate the plasticky molded ones.

I use them for the simple fact to prevent what happened a couple weeks ago. I was driving a cart that came with the greens fee, and the bag fell off. The F***king lever detached, you cold nolonger use that said of the cart. The one time I did not put the headcover back on my driver. Luckly nothing major, just a couple of paint chips that you cann't notice addressing the ball. If it was not for the iron covers, it would have been a bad day.

100 posts on the iron cover debate! i cant believe this thing has turned into this big of a thing. i grossly underestimated how many people are using these things, i hardly ever see anyone with them!
Do a search. You will see that there have been dozens of pages devoted to this very topic. It seems that people have more pleasure polishing their clubs than in playing golf.
I think what you meant to say is that you're often waxed by players with iron covers.
There have been some close calls but it hasn't happened yet.

I learned this past weekend that Brush Tees and iron covers kind of go together like peanut butter and jelly. :cheesy:

I think if you are going to use Brush tees you should tie a little string to it and your big toe so when it goes flying you don't have to spend 5 minutes looking for it.
I played with a guy in a two man scramble last week that used one of those tees. After a few holes of looking for it everytime I could tell it wouldn't be long before I had to say something so instead I just headed back to the cart and took it easy while the search went on on alot of the holes. Evidently people look for those things longer then I new PRO V in the ruff.
I did think it was in my best interest to keep the peace. After all he was striping it down the middle with his brush tees and I was hitting greens with my irons after I pulled my iron covers off. Thank goodness we won and could afford a little more than peanut butter and jelly...LOL ..I am thinking next time peanut butter and jelly will go together just fine.

It could be that people want to simply protect their irons. They are an investment!
They are only an investment if they make you money. If they are collectors items, chances are they wont be used. The only other opportunity to make money with them is to win more money with them than you paid for them.

I used them just because I did not like the look of bag chatter on the back of the irons, especially on blades where the back of the head has a flat, mirror polished surface. Any dents and dings on the back side look terrible, and no, you dont get those dents and dings from playing them, you get those when the clubs are in the bag.

I'd almost bet it was a EZ-GO cart, I had the same thing happen to me but the bag fell off 4 times in three holes!!! I finally tied it on with the bag strap so I could get back to the clubhouse and change carts. The first time I'm thinking "well maybe I didn't put it on good" or something, double checked it and pulled out and in 30 yds it fell off again! I was so pi$$ed by the time I got to the bag drop to get another cart I had to watch myself and not take it out on the cart guy.

I personally dont like the look of iron covers....I tried them years ago for one round as I do see a lot of benefits as mentioned already, re-sale value, clubs kept in better condition etc. but I found them a bit of a nuisance, taking them off & then on again, its not as quick as say just throwing the head cover over your driver, I think for what its worth & with the amount of rain I have to play through, its a lot easier to just pull the club out of the bag & hit it!

I didn't use them on my regular JPX-800s, and suffered no issues really. But with the PROs, I wanted the covers on from get go to keep them nice. Why? I bought a used set and saw what they look like when left to chatter, and thrust into a bag without regard to what they hit. Yes, I like to keep the backs and soles as ding free as possible. Yes, the covers are a little annoying, but you rather get used to them. Someday, I may not care so much and turn them loose. Today I care. Actually, if you cover everything else, you can leave the driver uncovered without it getting banged on, and I don't have to wrestle that Titleist cover off and on. That is a real benefit of iron covers. My Cameron 98 model, will always be covered.

I bought my first set of iron covers along with my first new set of forged irons. The intention was to minimize bag chatter as, at the time, they were a pretty big investment for a college kid who sold cell phones all summer to pay for them. Since then I've moved back to cast Game Improvement irons, but I continue to use covers more for the decreased noise, both cart or walk, along with the chance to color-coordinate one more thing along with my bag/grips/towel/driver/woods/putter-cover. I wore out a set of the super-cheap black neoprene covers within a month. I wore our a set of the basic neoprene Club Glove covers in about a season. I'm not on a premium set of Club Glove Skin covers that have lasted nearly 5 seasons now, though with drastically decreased use.

I'm also a bit organizationally OCD and have a 14-way stand bag on the way, a first for me. I'm moving to a red/white/blue theme with everything (including grips) and I'm going to mix red, white, and blue iron covers as well. I'm going to be trying the neoprene with clear window type for the first time. If the window becomes an annoyance in terms of club ID I'll just go back to the Glove Skin covers, probably in pewter.

When I first bought iron covers I was a 8 handicap, though now I'm probably closer to a 20.

Mizuno says no iron covers.

When I bought my Mizunos this year I thought they were so beautiful that I didn't want to hit them for fear of getting grass and dirt on them. I hated using those hard, ugly range balls on my beautiful irons. Still will not hit range balls with my beautiful wedges. So I also thought I might break out the old iron covers for my new babies. Then I discovered that Mizuno recommends AGAINST covers for their forged irons. They say that any moisture trapped in the cover can damage the metal. I'll use covers when I travel (that is why I bought them years ago) but go naked the rest of the time. They have all seen dirt and they clean up fine. I ride with a big bag that allows enough room for each club without much chatter.

Full disclosure: I do not carry a man-purse but I do cry at the movies.

What they should say is do not store them with the covers. My Adams CB2's stay in my finished basement --- naked. When packing them up the covers go on. When I return teh covers stripped off and the clubs are cleaned, wiped down and and again stored in their bag naked.

I'm an iron cover supporter but don't like the hassle. Recently moved to some 17-4 Pings, which are much harder and more durable than a forged carbon steel irons, and ditched the covers. Bought a Bag Boy bag that has built in club clips to reduce the chatter since I hate the sound of my babies, er clubs, banging into one another. The bag does it's job decently but the clubs come unclipped and still bang around some, although less than before. Better than nothing anyway, and easier than iron covers.
