Iron Covers

What do they signify to you?
Pretty straightforward, I bought a set of forged irons and someone told me to get iron covers so they don't end up dinged which I did. I am really glad I did because after having them for almost a year they look as good as when I got them. But what do you think when you see someone who has iron covers on their irons? And why do you think that?

If this is in the wrong forum just move it I didn't know exactly so just took a guess at it.

Signifies that somebody doesn't want to get their clubs all beat up......I personally like the chattered look on my forged irons but to each his own.

I've used them. I had them on my Mizuno's until I wore holes in them. I just havent replaced them. I also dont understand why it bothers people so much. What difference does it make to anyone if someone else has iron covers?

Leave no doubt in your mind though, that at some point in this thread, someone will get all worked up over the thought of them. Someone will attempt to justify why it is an embarrassment to the game, and state that they would never play a round with anyone who used them.

I use them but I do have a set of Miura Small Blades. I've had them for a couple of seasons now and was going to stop using them this season, but ended up keeping them on as they bash about in the boot / trunk of the car and when I use my Tour bag and a power caddy / buggy. Not so bad when I carry, but it's still a lot quieter with the covers.

When I first took up the game I was told to buy head covers too, and did. They lasted a few months before they started annoying me. Mostly because there are so many things to attend to during a round of golf, worrying about head covers is another unneeded concern. The classic annoyance was to keep from losing one, I'd stick it in my pocket when I intended on using a club. Bothersome because I purposely only have a five items in my right pocket, and keep the left and back pockets empty.

Club head covers remind me of putting a car-cover on my car every time I go into a store just because it was costly, or wearing galoshes in the winter... I understand the intent, just don't see the day in and day out value. Clubs are tools to me... The best I can do is keep the rain cover on the bag at all times when not playing; which works fine. I bought my clubs in 07 and they still look really nice considering how much they get used.

No issue for me either. Don't care what other people choose to use but you asked what they signify so my opinion is it signifies that you care more about the way they look and less about how they perform. You hit irons off the ground, they are meant to get a little beat up. I think this site especially people buy clubs as an investment and that's fine with me. Not what I do though, I buy irons to use with the intent to wear them out and then replace them. Of course it doesn't always work that way but if you buy iron covers for the sole reason to protect the value because you plan on selling them soon then what's the point of ever playing them at all?

Honestly?

The bloke's a chopper. He'll be fannying about doing all sorts of anal/compulsive behaviour-type stuff the entire time we're out on the course. We'll almost inevitably have some sort of an 'I've got to go back. I've dropped something...' moment. After a couple of holes, I'll cop for:

'I don't know how you can use a club that looks like that.'

'I couldn't stand to look at a clubface as worn as that. Surely it doesn't spin as much as it should do?'

'Uggh. I hate the way lead tape looks. Ugly. I don't know how you can stand to look at it.'

'I have to have the proper headcovers for my woods. I couldn't have ones like those on my clubs. It would put me off.'

'I don't know why you don't get some new clubs. The pros get new ones every tournament you know. Their clubs are always pristine, like mine.'

Boring conversation about boring topics will be the norm, and I'm almost guaranteed to get an unwanted critique of my swing at some point from a bloke who looks as though he's killing a mole with a shovel and who can't break 90.

Lastly, It'll be a long day.

Slightly tongue-in-cheek, I grant you, but all those things have happened on at least one, and often numerous occasions, and are thus borne out by experience. Stereoytyping's not an exact science, I know, but in certain situations it seems to hit around a 90% success rate. Iron covers seem to be one of those situations.

I have to wonder how many of us who are in the camp of "iron covers are for hacks", are putting the mini spacesuit on your driver and FW clubs? If it's so cool to let your irons get banged up, why not let that driver bang around and develop some character? I'm not taking sides it's just an honest question. I used iron covers when I first started playing 20 years ago, but I quickly grew tired of the hassle, yet I always put the covers on my metalwoods and nearly have a heart attack if they get scratched. Can't really make fun of a guy who wants to protect his $900 set of irons while you're covering your $200 putter in an airbag. :)

My driver is titanium... wood is steel. When banged against each other they make a big annoying sound, so I have two custom head covers on them. Way more options for wood covers too, as those clubs are not meant for digging.

To me, headcovers on woods and putters are to protect softer materials, paint, and/or shafts.

My question for people who look at golf clubs as an investment, is do you think golf clubs are really a good investment. Especially if they are something you are actively using. Investments should appreciate, but your irons will depreciate no matter what. It's the same reason buying a normal car or computer is not an investment.

How 'bout making fun of a guy who uses the term "metalwoods?" ;)

I protect my irons from themselves and other things with iron covers when they're traveling in my travel bag (where some serious damage could occur were things not packed tightly at the top of the bag). Outside of that, I think they don't make enough sense to use.

My 5-iron has a ding in the leading edge from a rock in a bunker, NOT from bag chatter...

As somebody who has taken a lot of sets in on trade at a golfshop, a set of irons in good condition will always get more money then the set of dinged clubs. And if you can bring me in an older set of forged clubs that look mint on the topline of the club they will be worth almost twice what the guy who brings in the ones with the dinged top.

I can't help but wonder how much golf the guy would be playing that has clubs with no marks... who has top line marks???? :ok: I don't, and my forged clubs were bought in 07, only covered regularly by the bag rain hood..

I'd be willing to bet those that bag guys for using iron covers certainly use them on their putter and driver. Why is that so different?
