If the club fitter uses TOMI, he will do just as fine as with SAM.
Tomi is not that expensive as SAM either, so i guess there is a few more TOMI's out there than there is SAM's, and maybe they charge less to.
Anyway - Putter fitting is the most important club to get right, so you want waist your money anyway, but like @Nitram says, you might hear something about your putting you don't like.
I'v heard of players who totally messed up after being fitted in a SAM's lab, so i guess its like every other fitting. The club fitter should know what he is doing.

Yes.

But be forewarned, it gives you facts about your stroke that is otherwise conjecture.

im not so much worried about that as i am it telling me im using the wrong putter, im using a method 003 that i have been putting the best with of all my putters, i swap out a betti/mizzy BC1, cleveland classic bronze 2, and a kombi S. im all for having them all worked on as i love them all but i dont want to be told to scrap them and that i need a different style of putter

i would agree but ive only started to play the game as of april of 2009, if i knew then what i know now, i wouldn't of bought 5 putters and then decide to go get fitted for one, my goal is to hope to get 4 of the 5 bent/cut to specs per the fitting but not to buy another putter. as well as to know what specs to order any new putters i may buy.

Man, you said a mouthful. Got my SAM test for first time back in Jan. Have not looked at putting the same way since. Much to work on afterwards, but the results are real. Putting better than ever. Basic thought being this, if you don't know what is wrong, you can't fix it. Worth far more than a hundred bucks.

Dan-

I see that you're in NC. Can I ask where were you fitted using SAM? Obviously you were happy with the results. I need to have this done this winter. Thanks for you help.

Two places actually and both come with the highest approval from me. I will be seeing both of these guys again without question.

David Orr (forum member) and Director of Golf at Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC (near Raleigh). Awesome guy and an absolute genius. I went to him for full swing work, but we spent an hour or two on putting afterwards. We did some basic SAM testing then and he addressed my putter fit, stance, stroke, etc.. and spent some time out on the green working on my green reading. Very fruitful few hours.

Glen Coombe (forum member) is The Putting Doctor in Sumter,SC. He knows more about putting that words here can describe. I spent a half day with him this past Jan and learned so much. We worked on my stroke, mechanics, aim, green reading, etc.. and I will be spending another half day with him in the coming months. We did a full SAM testing and will do the same when I see him next time. SAM don't like.

I'm familiar with Orr. He's only 45 minutes - 1hr from me. Sounds like a plan. Thanks again.

Tomi is not as good as SAM IMHO.

We are very fortunate to have a SAM Putt Lab and Balance Lab at my work, I haven't used the Balance Lab yet but the Putt Lab is sensational!

Well worth booking a lesson/fitting on.

Our instructors use it regularly for coaching our clients and we use it for fitting too.

Howard, yes it will give you a lot to think about if your stroke needs work, but better to know and be able to fix it then to not know and struggle on the greens!

I just did one at club champion. well worth it in my book. I'm a big numbers don't lie guy so just being able to see data was helpful. it gave me a good chance to see what worked and what doesn't.

What exactly are you learning from the SAM sessions? Stroke path?
[/quote]

Stroke path, face angle throughout the stroke, angle of attack, tempo/rhythm (I can't remember off the top of my head what the terminology is for that part) and how fast the stroke is.

All of the strokes can be compared against each other and a consistency reading is given for each of the criteria measured by the SAM Putt Lab.

So there are some fundamentals that most people should try to achieve with their putting stroke but as with any golf swing/putt it is all about repeat ability and it gives you data on that.

Oh yes there is a lot to learn from it, but like i said, the fitter needs to know what he is doing, and il give you an example
- Some is "hung up" in tempo, and yes its important, but not the most important, so there is nothing wrong if the player hit it in the cup 7 out of 10, and tempo sais its all wrong.

Putting is very personal, and a feel matter most of all, so how the player adjust his tempo should not be a subject as long as the ball goes to the cup, because no matter what, thats the target for it all, not to please some fixed parameters in a fitting software.

I'm considering a SAM session too. $75 for an hour, which seems fair.

Is it primarily a fitting or teaching tool? I'm more interested in improving my putting stroke, and if I discovered my putter was a bad fit, so be it.

If I use 2 different putting styles ("conventional" and claw) would SAM be able to objectively compare the 2 and see which one works best for me and what I should do to optimize that style? I have been switching back and forth a lot lately and it would be nice to have objective results as to which style I am "better" at.
