Paint fill 101

Thanks to the OP and everyone for their tips. This is another alternative for you guys that supports some of the later posters.

The EASIEST, MOST CONVENIENT, SAFEST way for me was 1) Acetone in a zip lock bag for 20 minutes 2) Nail polish at Target.

You can even use the nail polish brush to just paint over the areas to fill and EASILY dip a qtip in acetone. The excess paint comes off just like a dry eraser. Just a light stroke or the paint in the filled areas may come off if you press too deep.

I don't have time to go to a hobby shop nor do I want to mess with stronger chemicals, so this technique worked. This is my first attempt to do this on my Scotty Monterey & Laguna. I'm very happy with it being my first time and a DIY project ;)

Here are the pics I wanted to share. Hope the tips help. :partytime2:

It's true acetone will take off MOST paint, but there are many applications where the acetone just doesnt get the job done (Vokey's are pretty stubborn) and that is where the Tal Strip makes all the difference in the world.
Also others are talking about acrylics not holding up. Cheap acrylics dont, but I havnt had a single durability issue with Tamiya acrylics. They are a thinner paint that holds on to the pores of the metal much better than the .99 cent michaels acrylics.

Anybody have any problem with paint flaking or coming out all together? I used the Tamiya paints and noticed on a few Irons that the paint was kind of falling out. Did I just have too light of a fill?
That's just one of the reasons I used nail polish. Acrylics don't really stick to bare metal well. Usually your filling a 'channel' so it holds just fine but ultimately it's not always bonded to the surface itself. Try painting a flat surface on the club with it and see if you can't scrape it right off with your finger nail. Thats a pretty good way to test the bond.

Thats why you see more jewerly and such that's enameled as well.

I've never had any issues. Make sure you overfill and then scrape away excess paint with a strip of playing card or something substantial.

It's just doesnt' stick to bare metal well,it's a fact. SS is the worst, some cast not quite as bad. I've even had factory fill pop out all on it's own.

Especially sightlines on putters like Scottys where the milling is open ended. Just doesn't stick to bare metal as well. That's why when you paint bare metal you use primer at least. If it really matters you'd use etching primer or epoxy primer. ;) Would you paint a car without primer first? Forget about with acrylics. Even Tamiya sells metal primer for their own paints.

You can get away with it here but it's still not as good.

If it holds up good enough for you , then thats fine. No worries. Whatever works, works.

But I dont use it for that reason. I airbrush and use pretty high end airbrush acrylics and automotive paints not hobby stuff and they don't still don't stick as well without primer. Plus the other things I mentioned like nearly instant drying times and such.

Anyway...

More than one way to skin a cat. :)

Deerslayer. He's the bomb.

IIRC the flames were a decal painted under/over.

The fades I do but it take some practice. I start with the base color thinned way down and just before it starts to dry add the second color also thinned and then I hit it with a heat gun when it blends right where I want it to lock it in. Its a feel thing.

You can do some 2 color transparent fades by doing the base color , dried and then the top color and a actual drop of your thinning agent (depending on paint) and let it react.

I'm sure everyone has there own little tricks. Thats the fun in this , its just so easy you can do it over and over again till you get what you want. I had a 3 color fade in the circles of a Scotty of mine years ago that I must have done 20 or 30 times to get it right.

That IS the negative to enamals like nail polish. It just dries too fast to be able to 'play' with it for effect.

I think you are gonna have to experiment. Usually the ghosted clubs are polymer or powder coat and matching that may be tough. Not impossible but tough!

I was afraid of that-
I have called around - (TaylorMade) for 1 and even they couldn't answer the color question. Those particular putters are done by someone else.
Last thing I want to do is make it worse than it is.

Thanks Fireblade and Mike. I will DEFINITELY go out and get some strip and Tamiya paints. I just did the Acetone/Nail Polish because it was convenient to get (at Target after church). I guess the black finish that Deerslayer did was using a torch and other stuff. I would love to make my Laguna darker...

So i read this today, got the supplies, and started the project right up. Only doing the wedges for now just to get some practice before taking it to my irons. But while waiting for this stuff to dry i decided to YouTube about paint fill and came up with this little clip. It appears to be from a Titleist shop or maybe even Tour Van based on how small the work space appears. All he uses for fill is an Acrylic paint marker and a swipe of acetone on a rag.

I did my older Rainbow 03 and it didn't have a factory paint fill. It looks like some kind of chemical oxidation process but definitely not paint. Tal-Strip did nothing. The clear colored Tamiya's all turned out looking almost black. Has anyone seen this before? Anyway, I redid with solid colors and it came out nice. What about adding a clear gloss top coat to improve durability?

Sorry if I missed it but where can one purchase some tal strip?
Trying to locate the equivalent to Tal-strip in Australia, 3M don't stock it here.
Tried a couple of Autozone's myself with no luck... U ended up grabbing what seems to be a rustoleum version of tal-strip (auto stripper).

Trying it on some old clubs now to see if it works.

Thanks MikeV and erwintrace for all the tips and pics.

I attempted my first paint fill on a old wedge yesterday and ended up doing my 3 oil can vokeys that I play with. I started simple and used just acetone on qtips to rub off the old paint. It worked well and got about 99% of the paint off (i couldnt find tal strip locally). I went with nail polish to fill this first time. It looks good but plain. I think I am going to use some nice acrylics next time.

Anyway thanks again to all the posters in this thread. Having all this info made my first paint fill go smoother than I thought it would.

So, does Testors enamel not work well for this?
It does work. I prefer the acrylics but if you are patient enough to let the enamel cure overnight you should get some good results.
OK sweet, thank you. I didn't want to have to return the enamels I just purchased, and I am definitely patient enough to wait overnight. Thanks.
