Paint fill 101

wasn't quite ready for the full deal the OP described so I got paint stripper, acetone, nail polish, and some clear coat nail polish hardener stuff. I stripped paint and got as much off as I could, then painted in the clubs, cleaned em up and threw down some of the clear hardener stuff. so far so good!
big thanks to the OP!

Thanks man!

Funny you mention the Method, I removed all of the paint fill with the plan to redo it (not sure on the colors yet) but kinda like the all black look.
It hasn't gotten a ton of time on the course so it's still in great shape.
If I end up deciding to re-do the paint fill I will definitely post some pics.

You guys have my motivated to try this myself. I have a ton of demo irons/wedges in the basement I am going to experiment with. Last night watching the Bruins-Canucks game I was using nail polish remover and a baby pin (also used a compass). I found using the sharp tip really let me get into the tight grooves. I found that different makes use different paints that require some work. Cleveland wedges, the word "Cleveland" on the sole is THICK. I kept rubbing the N-P-R on it, let it sit for 1 min then would chip away at it. Took good part of half a period to do 1 club. My Wishon iron was simple to do and I think it's going to come out the nuts. I am going with an orange & black theme for the clubs. I plan on hitting Michael's crafts tomorrow on my lunch break for the paint.

Had a Fastback blacked out and starting the paintfill. Really struggling with getting excess off. The refinisher (Vibrant Golf) who did the putter recommended using Denatured Alcohol instead of Acetone and other strong solvents (due to the new black finish).

It's really hard (impossible) not to overflow on the weights and when I try to remove it always gets in the lines and thins the grooves I want to paint. Anyone else struggling w this?

Thanks!

Not at all, I used Tamiya enamel paints. The biggest tip to me was the use of alcohol prior to using the new paint.
That helps with the end result tremendously.

How important is the brand of acrylic paint? I bought some acrylic paint at Michael's yesterday. I did the job last night. I let the paint dry over night and I am LESS then pleased with the outcome. The paint looks very "dry" looking and when I cleaned off the excess the paint in the cracks came up.

I did 3 different clubs, some of the small words on the back panel will be fine and really won't be subject to wear but anything on the sole will be worn away in 2 holes.

I tried the technique of using the toothpick like a puddy knife and filling on the grooves like spackle. The filling worked great.

There are a lot of different types of acrylics, so it does matter. I would try Testers, Tamiya, or nail polish. I got my Testers from Michaels. Having done it, I would probably go with nail polish, just for the variety of colors. Mixing my own colors was a PITA.

here are some of the pics, see if you can pick out what I meant. What I do like is the contrast on the 550M back side where you see the model # and FORGED.

I've been off line a while, and changed my screen name also but to answer the acrylic question there are tons like vendetta says it make all the difference in the world. Testors paints are enamals. Tamiyas acrylics are the only ones I've found to work well. I'm sure there are others but since I've found the tamiyas I've had no reason to keep looking. Most craft acrylics have a latex property to them that looks awful on clubs.

Thanks Huck,

I might try the nail polish idea next. This is just a fun side project so I am not driving all over God's creation for paints. I do not have any places that carry Tamiya in my area.

Me neither. I think others get them off eBay.

Nail polish supposedly works quite well though. Give that a shot first, as it's a pretty cheap investment. If it works, no need to look for others.

I must have not looked at the right website, I found a RC model shop about 1/2 mile from my work who carries the Tamiya paint line. I'll shoot over there next week on my lunch break.
